3Decent Unit, but still needs work
By Sean Douglas
The system was pretty easy to set up thanks to the color coded wires and step-by-step setup on the screen. The sound was ok, about what you'd expect from a HTIB.My biggest complaints regarding the product were that it supports various file types via DLNA, but I believe they require a computer running their software in order for it to work properly. I run a NAS that has a media server built into it and didn't want run a computer with software just to watch my movies. I was able to play around with it and get .mkv files to work without any software, but couldn't get .mp4 files to work. I didn't try installing the software to see if .mp4 files would work.My other complaint regarding the device is that I couldn't find a way to switch to a source directly. I kept having to scroll through the inputs (even if nothing was attached). So anytime I wanted to go from HDMI to Bluetooth, I had to scroll through every source until I got to Bluetooth. If I passed it, I had to go through them all again.Navigating through my files on my NAS (even though it couldn't play them) was decently fast, though I wish there was a way to change the arrangement of the files. It lists them 2 rows of large icons that you have to scroll to the right through. Would be nice if you could change to a list mode and scroll down viewing the entire file name. This is likely to be a good unit if you just want something quick and easy to get sound better than TV speakers. You'll likely want to use it in a smaller room since the wires to the speakers are proprietary and only have one length. If you need more length, you'll need to splice the end of the wire together to some 3rd party wire of the same gauge. You'll also need a spot to plug in the wireless receiver for the rear speakers, which you have to use since the main device doesn't include ports for the rear speakers.

5Awesome sounding speakers
By damnbro
I have these set up in a rather large room and the speakers are loud! the bass rattles all 3 floors of my house! sound quality remains great even at high volumes. And WOW at the size of the subwoofer. Way larger than I was expecting The only thing i wasn't prepared for was the input for the 5.1. I use these mainly with my laptop / Ipod and had to purchase an adaptor (link below). Not a huge drawback. Overall great buy. Don't waste your money on a logitech z5500.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006U3ACY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

4WOW!!!
By R. Surber
I found myself in search of a new sound system for my Mac Pro after my Klipsch Promedia 4.1's subwoofer gave out after ten or so years of ownership. I was very disappointed in the limited options for a high end sound system for pc's these days. While the market is awash with 2.1 systems, there are few 5.1 systems to be found out there. I was equally disappointed to find that Klipsch no longer makes either the 4.1 or 5.1 systems... and their last Promedia 5.1's demonstrated unreliability of the subwoofer after three months or so in the majority of reviews that I had read. I spent about two weeks searching the web for a sound system to replace my much loved Promedia 4.1's, and even considered just trying to get the subwoofer repaired instead. I looked at the Logitech z5500's and the Bose Companion 5's and was just about to settle for the Logitech z5500 when through my searching I landed on reviews of the Edifier S550 at [...] and went on to look at them in more depth. It was difficult to find a poor review of these speakers. In head to head match up's, the Edifier's came out on top, capturing the highs and lows, better base, better all around price, and better quality construction. So, I took the plunge...The speakers arrived today. It took some time to set up the system because of the connectors and the fact that Mac's don't have 5.1 sound cards, and this is not the easiest system to hook up to a receiver. I ended up buying two sets of Y-Cable's (2F-1M by Kicker) and some RCA Plug Couplers, along with a Stereo Mini to RCA "Y" cable 1.8m, to connect it to my computer. I do not know how much this affects the sound quality... I'm sure some audiophile will say it does, but I am not an audiophile, I just know what I like in terms of sound. I have a Bose sound system in my car, and an Onkyo theater system, and a Bose sound dock for my iPhone/iPod... and as I said I was replacing a Klipsch system I had for about ten years. So, I this is the range I'm playing in.So, while I am not a audiophile pro. I have always had high end sound systems, and I just know what sounds good to me. I appreciate quality and don't mind to pay for such. These babies just reek of quality. The subwoofer is gigantic, and the shelf speakers feel quite solid as well. When I finally got the setup to work, quite a long, frustrating ordeal, I was blown away... The system is LOUD. The sound is enveloping and quite clear, rather than cacophonous and "in your face" or "tinny" ... I was totally amazed that even with the system cranked all the way up, with even the "boost" feature activated I could not discern any distortion. The clarity remained, the music enveloping me from all corners of the room rather than just in my face, so to speak. You can manage the sound of the front and back, and middle speakers separately, along with the subwoofer--and then all together based on those determined preferences... I appreciated this quality as it is easier to set up the system to ones personal sound preferences without having to only rely on actual placement of the speakers. You can make the back speakers louder, and the front softer, etc.Even with the speakers turned low, the sound remains enveloping and sounds "loud," "heavy" and clear... equal to Bose in most respects, the clarity excelled my Klipsch speaker system which sometimes had a tendency to sound rather "tinny" and would distort if turned up too loud. The customer service department was also quite helpful when I called them with questions about set up, even taking the time to email me with other suggestions on handling my issues of set up.So, a layman's pro's and con's of this system as of day one (I will follow up as time passes if I can edit this entry) are:Pro's:* Sturdy construction. The subwoofer is quite heavy... and did I mention it is HUGE??? The speakers themselves are weighty and sturdy in both construction and appearance. Made of wood, not plastic.* The sound is clear, heavy, and enveloping, regardless of volume.* Turned all the way up, the sound is LOUD and THUMPING, and I could not discern any evidence of distortion. My much loved Klipsch's could not be turned all the way up without distortion occurring, and while the sound was clear, there simply is no comparison with this system... none! I have never heard anything like them... even my Bose system will begin to show weaknesses when turned all the way up. Loudness has never meant sound quality or clarity to me until I heard these speakers!* Their tech support is quite helpful. When I called the customer support number, the call center was in Canada, however, the tech support person's accent was a little difficult to understand, but he was quite patient and helpful.* You can, with some effort, set the system up to work with a Mac Pro (see above), make sure to purchase those items as while cords come with the system, it does not have the cable to connect to the computer (customer support offered to send me the 2.1 connector free of charge as it was not in the original packaging). With the same connectors mentioned above, the system could be run through a receiver if you have multiple speaker systems.* The entire system looks quite nice and blends with the decor. Sleek black, made of wood, not plastic. The entire system bespeaks quality.* The speaker wires that are included with the system are of more than sufficient length to place the speakers anywhere in a large room.* The system came extremely well packaged.* From what I've read so far, they only improve with age, and are quite reliable... I will update as time passes to confirm this.* My Klipsch speaker system sometimes gave off interference, or a hiss. These speakers do not. They are quiet as a mouse until turned on with the music blaring from them. There is no background hiss or noise. Just amazing, clear, sound!Con's:* This is actually a 2.1 system if connected to your computer. This could be more clearly discussed so the buyer knows what they are getting (it can, as I have said, be set up as a 5.1 system though with the right cables). This is especially important as they are sold as computer speakers...* They should be easier to connect to a receiver.* While the system is quite sturdy, the netting on the front of the speakers and the lack of a protective grill on the subwoofer is a little disconcerting to me. I can just imagine accidentally putting my foot through the side of the subwoofer as I swivel in my chair and all kinds of particles from the air settling on the satellite speakers within their housings :( I have cats as well... with claws and falling hair... not to mention that I'm a smoker... so I'm a little concerned about how well they will hold up over time due to the lack of protective coverings). As I said, however, the system is made of wood, and shows sturdy workmanship with attention to detail. This is more a design issue.* The length of the cord connecting the Wired Controller could be just a tad longer to allow for placement farther away from the subwoofer.* The bass is a little heavy. I have the subwoofer turned down quite low, and the bass turned down lower as well, and it is still thumping... However, the overall sound remains, as I have said, undistorted and quite clear. The system could benefit from being able to turn the subwoofer down even lower than its current - 9 (the booklet says you can turn it down to - 13, but this is incorrect)Overall, this is a quality system with outright AMAZING sound. I hope it lasts me for years to come. On a 10 point scale, I would give it an 8.8 (defaulting to Amazon's rating of 4 out of 5 stars) due to the lack of substantial protective coverings over the speakers on the subwoofer, and the netting on the satellite speakers, the complexity of set up and the overwhelming bass.

5Amazing!!
By DFYANT
If you are looking for the best quality speakers for your computer, your search has ended. The rich sound from the mids and tweets are unmatched by anything else on the market, and the deep full bass is powerful. There's an old saying, "you get what you pay for," these speakers are inexpensive for what you get!

Harman Kardon SB16 Soundbar and Wireless 100 Watt Subwoofer (Black)

Product Description

Home theatre installations typically involve five loudspeakers, a subwoofer or two, and lots and lots of speaker wire. Not every room can accommodate all that stuff, and not every homeowner wants to live with it. The harman kardon home cinema soundbar system offers an elegant and far simpler alternative: a single amplified loudspeaker unit connected directly to your television, DVD player or game console, and a single wireless subwoofer that you may place anywhere in the room. Offering traditional stereo playback or realistic 3-D surround-sound processing, the SB 16 delivers true harman kardon performance with the absolute minimum number of components, and with no wires in (or out of) sight.

3Great Sound, but Riddled with Glitches and Oversights
By James E. Jones
I was in the market for a soundbar for the game room in the new home I'm purchasing. After researching all the reviews, I decided to go with the SB 16. First things first: The sound is amazing. The faux surround really is impressive and the shape of the room doesn't matter. The sub has adjustable crossover and a phase switch, so you can find that perfect sweet spot for your room. $600 sounds steep, but you are getting a lot for your money. Now for the bad news: I wondered why I never saw any negative reviews for this thing, and I think it is because the system is too new and the problems have not yet been exposed. The sub is wireless so you can place it anywhere in the room. I've been reading a lot about these wireless sub systems and didn't think much of it until I got it home. My apartment is abound with wireless devices: 2 iPhones, a Kindle, Macbook, iMac, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii are all pulling from wifi. I know that's excessive, but I'm a gadget lover. Well apparently my wifi is interfering with the subwoofer connection. I noticed that every time my wife would switch web pages on the laptop, the sub connection would shut off and back on. There are four channels to choose from, but all experienced interference. This drove us both crazy, and we couldn't find any documented issues. Even Harman Kardon informed us of getting the unit serviced. I'd only had it 4 days, so I just opted to take it back to Fry's. Some other inconveniences are that even though the unit connects through an optical cable, it doesn't recognize the dolby digital signal and all components must be switched to digital stereo. The Harmony 900 doesn't recognize the unit either. Since it doesn't come with a remote, I had to program it to my TV remote, which documented in reviews, results in an annoying message popping up on my screen when adjusting the volume. This issue doesn't seem to occur with newer TVs, but my 3 year old DLP is affected.I ended up getting a Bose Cinemate II in an even exchange. My ears like the HK better, and I really appreciate the sound field adjustment options versus the Bose's single subwoofer volume dial, but the Bose wins big in convenience. The sub is wired meaning zero interference, but less placement options. I didn't plan on setting it in some far corner anyway. The unit automatically detects the source so no having to switch from digital to analog, and the Harmony remote recognizes the unit. The two speaker setup is also better for me in the long run. I'm using the system for my gaming rig, and having a wii sensor or my inevitable Kinect sensor sitting in front of a soundbar just looked weird. When and if these kinks are worked out, I'm sure this system will be awesome, but if you have a bunch of wifi devices, stay away from the HK.

5Harman Kardon SB16...Extremely Happy...No regrets!!!
By Jason H. Nagao
Pros:Ease of setupExcellent sound qualitySimple functionalityFlawless integrationCons:No volume indicatorSurround sound (but was expected)We received our Harman Kardon SB16 last night. Be warned, the box the system is delivered in is HUGE! Once opened, you will find two main boxes, one containing the sound bar and a second containing the subwoofer. In a matter of 15 minutes, we had the system unboxed, powered, and wired directly to our TV via the provided optical cable. There's an RCA cable and brackets to mount the sound bar, which we didn't use.The next step was programming the remote, which was quirky due to (unfortunately) user error. I tried to program our DirecTV remote which was an utter fail (I concluded that this was due to its "Universal" nature). Grabbed our Samsung remote and I had it programmed in about 10 minutes. Once the unit was programmed, it learned the signal from our DirecTV remote. Our TV doesn't have the "no sound" message that other reviewers commented on, which we knew before hand (thanks reviewers for mentioning that!).Sound-wise, I am in Heaven! The sounds are so crisp and clear. The bass is perfect (after some fine tuning). We really have no complaints about the sound quality. I have to note that we weren't expecting great surround sound from this system (it is just a sound bar and subwoofer). The "3D Surround" feature is okay. If you're looking for a top notch surround system, this is not it.Also, one tiny quirk that bothered me was not knowing where we were in regards to volume level. It would have been nice to have a display indicating you were on, say volume level 10. I like knowing I have two more clicks before it goes to "zero". But, this is more of a personal preference. The quality of the product is better than other units on the market. The sound bar feels very sturdy and looks "clean" on our TV stand. The gloss black finish of the subwoofer makes it easy to place in our living room. Even with its very large size, it doesn't look awkward or out of place. The wireless feature was a great selling point. Plug it into the wall and you're good to go. So far we do not have any interference from our wireless router, cell phones, wireless printer, wireless laptops, etc.Overall, we couldn't be happier with our purchase. After reading many reviews (the good and the bad) we felt that this system was perfect for what we needed: A simple, high quality sound system, to provide excellent sound quality to fill our average sized apartment living room. Don't let the price scare you. Spending what we did on the product, I was a bit hesitant and wanted to find anything wrong with it so we could send it back. Needless to say, it's a keeper!

1Warning--Issue on Audio Decoding Abilities on Optical Hook Up
By Jimmah!
Wow, this units could have been amazing except for one key fatal flaw. Beware!!!! When I hooked it up to my TV, I wanted to use the Digital Optical link. I tried both the analog and digital. The digital sounded much better. In using the SB16, I realized it won't work for any of my digital TV channels(it worked for standard analog channels) via the optical link. In talking with both customer service for Harman Kardon and my TV manufacturer, the problem was clear. The SB16 is designed to only decode PCM audio data via the optical link. It fails to be able to decode 5.1 signals. The extremely smug tool I talked with at Harman stated....it isn't a surround sound unit. Yes, it isn't, but when the signal from the TV is 5.1, it should be able to decode. In this case, the 5.1 is the format for the data streaming into the SB16. It should be able to handle data in both the PCM and 5.1 format. Harman's answer was that I should downgrade my TV so everything is just PCM. My less than a year old TV doesn't have this option. It makes sense that it wouldn't. Why should it downgrade the better audio linkage standard? If you don't plan on using this via the optical link or can deal with PCM data only, this unit has excellent sound quality. It is a very nice unit. That said, the optical link is the optimal way to connect and 5.1 data is becoming the new standard. Why Harman wouldn't have this unit ready for the near future is beyond me.My rating of 1 star may seem harsh. I find this flaw critical. You may not. I'd like others to know about this major flaw in the optical linkage, so they don't have to deal with this issue after a purchase.

2Pyle PD1000A Good concept but poor audio.
By Kenneth L. Bird
The Pyle PD1000A seemed a good idea. Build in the DVD/CD player into the receiver. One would expect Pyle to be innovative given their good reputation in the Pro Audo field. So I ordered one to upgrade my current TEAC Receiver. I could eliminate the DVD/CD player and pick up extra space on the audio rack.Out of the box the PD1000A is impressive to view and comes with a set of rack mount ears. Its weight indicates the heavy power transformer required for the high wattage outputs. The USB/MP3 inputs are a good idea and the bass, treble, volume and input controls were easy to use. I do not see why they included a Karaoke capability with two microphone jacks. The controls for same take up much of the lower part of the front panel and the utility of Karaoke is lost on the avereage audio buff.A major drawback are the blue LEDs that light up behind each control button. So bright are these lights you can't read the labels the panel. They need a dimmer control. As the unit plays, the noise from two built in cooling fans do not add much to the ambiance of the listening room. The DVD/CD player functioned well and the video was crisp and well defined. Where the PD1000A falls down is the major reason most people would buy one-audio quality. The unit received has a terrible hiss of white noise in the audio no matter what input was in use. Turning down the treble did not help, indicating poor output stage design. The overall audio quality was also poor. The bass was thin, even with the control at max and what treble that could be heard above the white nolise was not very brilliant. I wondered why the on line specs did not include the amplifier response. It is listed in the manual at 40 to 15KHz, hardly what would have passed for high fidelity in 1949, much less 2009.The Pyle PD1000A is definitely not suitable for home audio use. Its best application would be in the rack of a commercial AV system or a DJ system.I'm staying with my current system until someone come up with a good audio quality all-in -one DVD/CD receiver. Pyle missed the mark with the PD1000A.

1Think twice before buying
By SWD
I purchased this item primarily to connect my original Bose speaker system to my TV. I liked the added bonus of the DVD player since mine was very old with lots of problems. As an amplifier, this the Pyle unit worked well. That's the best news I can give. Now for the bad. The disk player never worked. The cooling fans are very noisy and constantly switch on and off. The lights on the front of the unit are a little overwhelming, but I could have lived with that. However, I went online and started the return process the same day I opened the box. I ordered a similar product from another manufactured and am waiting for it to arrive. I have never heard of Pyle Audio before, but am unlikely to try another of their products. There is some great news. This was my first return with Amazon. The process couldn't be easier. Another reason to buy from them.

4Great Deal
By Cat-Lynn
When I began searching for a new receiver I wanted one that provided ease of use and was multifunctional. For the money this receiver provides multimedia use - DVD, CD, AM/FM, MP3 etc. I find the sound excellent for the price and have experienced no problems playing in any media format. I find the set up easy as is operating any of the functions. If there is a drawback, the bright blue function lights are quite bright and may be a bit distracting. Also the remote was a little cheap and buttons not easily identifiable. In all I am very happy with my purchase.

3not bad, but not real good either
By niels
The interface selection is decent, Dell didn't cut corners here, even though more than just 3 USB ports would be nice. For ~$600, an i3 was ok in Summer, but with the Year drawing to its end and Intel's new Ivy Bridge CPU's showing up in a couple of months, it would have been nice if a discounted i5 with its HD3000 could have made it into this model. There's no dedicated GPU at all, so you're stuck with the i3's anemic integrated graphics... ewww.As for the screen, I find the 1366x768 pixel resolution poor, no matter what fancy names they give it. But Dell isn't alone with this, everything from 11" to 15" comes with this atrocious resolution these days.To me, this resolution would be effective in an entry level gaming machine with a lower mid-range GPU like the HD6630M or GT540M, since those GPUs do a lot better with low resolutions. This notebook however has no GPU, so you won't be playing any games with it - leaving it for people who only do office work and maybe watch an occasional video. For office work, 1366x768 is extremely poor, especially if you're stuck with Microsoft's latest version of Office with those big ribbons... there is very little screen space left for Excel and Word to display what you're actually trying to work on. You can forget about legibly displaying a whole page of a document. In Excel, you'll be in a hell of scrolling-up-and-down-and-back-and-forth.So, I consider this display a mismatch for the only role this laptop can fulfill. (if you want nothing more than browse the web, you could of course buy a much lighter weight netbook, or, god forbid, a tablet)Lastly, its not exactly light weight for the screen size, there are 15.6" notebooks that weigh less. You are probably able to configure this model differently on Dell's website, but there can be drastic price differences in either direction, even for a unit with identical spec, cause Dell's own quoted prices never include tax, so on Dells site your bill jumps when you reach checkout, on Amazon it doesn't. At other times, Dell may have cut its prices, while the sales channel is still full of product with the old price. So do yourself a favor and double check :)

4nice
By Adam Short
the only complaint is that the speakers are on the bottom, and are not the best. I would recommend a good set of ear/head phonesSpeed, power, all great.Battery life is exceptional for me. I play a lot of music, so it is understandably a shorter battery life.

1Dell Review
By Russakat
I bought this computer and it broke after two months of using it. It makes an awful noise and smells like something is burning. I sent it back to Dell, and when they sent it back to me, it persisted on having the same problem. They didn't even fix it!!! Don't buy Dell! Dealing with Dell manufacturer is a nightmare! The quality of technical support and the quality of this product is simply below any human standard!

5Apple TV - Good Now, Potential to be Great
By Just Another Geek
I am not an Apple Afficianodo. I don't wear jeans and black turtlenecks in reverence to Steve Jobs. I don't hang out at the Apple Store and covet becoming a "genius"; however, I have to give credit where credit is due. The last few products Apple has brought out - the iPod, iPhone, iPad - have been incredible and changed the consumer electronics and media / software landscape. Apple TV is now positioned to do the same, but it will take some more time to fully realize the potential of this device.Apple TV effectively allows you to stream whatever is on your iTunes to your TV and home theater system. Moreover, it has built in support for Netflix, You Tube and a few other internet based media content providers. The picture quality and performance for these services are worth the price of admission. There is significant potential to advance the platform - just give it some time.System Overview: My Apple TV is plugged into a 60 inch Samsung 1080p LED HDTV via HDMI (video) and a Yamaha Home Theater Receiver via Toslink optical cable (audio). I have AT&T Uverse with their 802.11g Residential Gateway (combination of DSL modem and wireless router) with their Elite DSL service (6 MB per second). iTunes runs on a Dell Desktop with 4GB of memory, Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 500 GB Hard Drive operating on Windows Vista (64 bit) and secured with Norton 360 (firewall, antivirus, etc.). The network handles the Desktop, 2 iPhones, a Blackberry, an iPad, the Apple TV, 4 Laptops, a wireless Printer and a networked wired printer. The Computer / Residential Gateway are in the Den and the TV / Home Theater / Apple TV are in the family room. The two rooms are about 100 feet apart and are separated by five walls.Set Up: Easy as pie. It took five minutes to plug in the HDMI cable, the optical cable, the power outlet and then adding it to the wireless network. Sharing iTunes from my desktop to Apple TV took another 20 minutes, since I had to download the new version of iTunes and restart my computer and Apple TV. Apple really makes it easy - I didn't have to make any adjustments to my firewall settings to share iTunes on the desktop with Apple TV. I also downloaded the Apple Remote on my iPhone and iPad, which took another 5 minutes.User Interface: Apple's secret sauce is the simplicity of their products. Apple TV is no different. The menu is very simple - Movies, TV, Internet, Computer and Settings. Movies and TV are for renting content directly from iTunes within Apple TV. Internet gives you access to Netflix, You Tube, etc. Computer gives you access to iTunes on your computer. Settings allows you to change the various Apple TV options. The remote control is Apple's usual model of minimalist efficiency, with a menu button, a play / pause button and an iPod like controller. The supplied remote works well with Apple TV, but is a bit cumbersome when one has to enter data (e.g., e-mail addresses, search on YouTube or Netflix). A much better solution is downloading Apple Remote on your iPhone or iPad. It basically turns the iPhone or iPad into a big touch pad that allows you to use gestures to control the Apple TV (e.g., swipe left, swipe right, double click, etc.). Moreover, it automatically provides a keyboard when one is asked for text input (e.g., for search). Apple remote is free on the App Store.Netflix Streaming / Video Quality: Setting up Netflix was quick - basically just enter your e-mail address / password and you're ready to go. I watched some TV from BBC, a foreign flick and Iron Man. Each program loaded quickly - less than 30 seconds. Picture quality was good to great, depending on the source material. Picture quality was comparable to DVD for SD material(perhaps slightly better), but slightly less sharp than upconverted DVD or blue-ray. HD Programming looked like the HD on-demand programming through uVerse. There was enough of a buffer that there was no jittering, pixelation or stuttering on the streaming to the TV. Sound quality on the stream was good - I don't think they stream in 5.1, so the video stream doesn't leverage the subwoofer. Considering that I'm running a heavily taxed wireless system on 802.11g with a 100 foot distance between Apple TV and the Gateway, the picture quality and streaming performance are impressive. Having this quality of Netflix compatibility is worth the price of admission by itself.iTunes Streaming: I streamed some music from my Playlists from the Computer. Sound quality is good, but not great. My Yamaha CD Player sounds better, but it can only hold 5 cds. Having access to my entire library is very useful, so you lose sound quality but gain convenience. iTunes streams not only the music, but also the cover art. After a few minutes, Apple TV switches into screensaver mode and starts transmitting pictures to the TV along with the music. I also streamed some videos from my computer and the streaming was again flawless. One of the issues with Apple TV is that it only supports the Apple video standards, i.e., MP4. I had some DIVX files that I converted over to MP4 by using DVD Fab and imported them into iTunes. So if you have a library of AVI, Divx, Xvid, etc., this will require conversion of those files in order to stream from your computer.iTunes from within Apple TV: There is access to an iTunes store within Apple TV as well. They have a different pricing structure, in that TV shows and movies are available for rent only. They have a limited number of titles at this point - primarily BBC, ABC (since Steve Jobs sits on their Board) and Fox. CBS and NBC are not on Apple TV. Movie selection is decent - they have all the latest movies. The Apple TV selection can be easily increased by just downloading the content you want from iTunes on your desktop and then streaming it to Apple TV.YouTube Streaming: Surprisingly good. The HQ / HD You Tube pieces look remarkably crisp on the TV. The older content that was meant to watch on a small window on your computer looked a little pixelated, but acceptable.Apple has built a great platform with a lot of potential. With what is available right now - Apple TV is a pretty impressive value at $99. It is worth it just for the Netflix streaming and integration with iTunes. Since Apple TV is actually built on the same hardware (at least the processing chip) as the iPhone and iPad and has the same operating system, I wouldn't be surprised if there are "apps" that will eventually make it to Apple TV to further enhance Apple TV (e.g., ABC Streaming, Games, Amazon on Demand, etc.). There is supposed to be an upgrade to the operating system with a new version of Airplay that comes out in November, 2010. This will allow you to stream from an iPad or iPod to the Apple TV as well.I looked at other streaming devices (e.g., Roku, using my Panasonic Blue Ray for Netflix, etc.) and none of them had the simplicity and reliabilty that the Apple TV offers. The Wi Fi "stick" for my Blue Ray player is $80 anyway and the Netflix integration isn't anywhere nearly as robust as Apple TV. UVerse also has music and picture streaming built in using Microsoft Media Center - however, it required some network configuration and it crashes quite often. I didn't purchase a Roku, but a friend of mine has had a number of issues with streaming performance. At under $100, the Apple TV is competitively priced with other streaming options. Now just bring on the "apps".Update on 4/1/11:I've had the Apple TV for a few months now and I still really like it. Apple has introduced Airplay, which is worth mentioning as it has potential to be a gamechanger technology. Moreover, there has been significant activity on the "jailbreaking" front for the Apple TV.Airplay is Apple's system of transmitting video / audio wirelessly between compatible devices. Apple TV, the iPhone and iPad are all Airplay compatible. This has proven to be particularly useful feature as I can stream videos from my iPad to the Apple TV and have them appear on my TV. For example, I may have a digital copy of a movie on my iPad (perhaps purchased through iTunes or came with a DVD purchase). Through Airplay, I can transmit the movie directly from my iPad to the Apple TV and watch the movie on my TV. Similarly, if a friend has an iPhone and we want to listen to their latest music selection, we can stream their music from their iPhone directly to my stereo system through Airplay. The real gamechanger for Airplay is streaming video from websites onto my Apple TV so I can watch them on my TV. For example, I could be on the TED website and they have a video from a TED conference. I can stream the video directly to my Apple TV and watch the video on my TV's 60 inch screen instead of the iPad's 10 inch screen. Several websites have already incorporated Airplay compatibility into their videos, such as CNN and TED. I think Airplay is going to have an interesting adoption cycle - traditional media companies (e.g., TV Networks) probably won't endorse Airplay since it goes against their business model. Other websites that rely on video for traffic (e.g., adult sites, news sites, blogs, etc.) will probably adopt Airplay to gain more traction with consumers.According to Wikipedia, jailbreaking refers to "a process that allows devices running Apple's iOS operating system to gain full access to unlock all features of the said operating system, thereby removing limitations imposed by Apple". Once jailbroken, iOS users are able to load and run applications that are not available on the App Store. Jailbreaking a device is not illegal, much to Apple's chagrin; however, it could void one's warranty. I'm not going into how to jailbreak and Apple TV - just google "jailbreak Apple TV" for instructions. Since the Apple TV has been jailbroken, there have been some applications that have been launched to provide more robust usage of Apple TV. The Couch Surfer application is basically a web browser for Apple TV. Additionally, there are applications that allow Apple TV to play formats other than Apple approved formats, such as DIVX and others. I haven't jailbroken my Apple TV; however, one should be aware of what options are available for this device.

3Unrealized Potential (so far)
By ShutterBug
PROS*Low Power (less than 6 watts)*Compact*Good-looking UI*Netflix support (unlike previous generation AppleTV)*Remote App for iPad/iPhone/iPod touch*Airplay (though basically we just have Airtunes functionality until iOS 4.2 comes out for iPad/iPhone/iPod touch).*Closed Captions (Content dependent)CONS*Lots of "Loading..." screens*No Local Storage! (must stream over Internet or via iTunes on PC/Mac using Home Sharing. I know you were trying to cut costs Apple, but why not at least allow local USB storage? I know, I know: DRM.)*IR Sensor inferior to previous generation AppleTV (requires more direct line of sight)*Lag before videos and podcasts start playing (even when located on a local computer)*Netflix controls are not as good as Roku. Infrequent keyframes makes it hard to rewind to an exact spot. Roku does much better (and even PS3 Netflix controls are better).*Podcast controls sometimes get confused (screen indicates reversing at maximum speed, but video is actually reversing at 1x)*Doesn't precache artwork icons (Scrolling down through a list of podcasts or Netflix movies, it loads the screen with empty icons then slowly downloads them. This happens no matter how long you wait before scrolling down. Sometimes, it never gets around to downloading certain icons. Hey Apple, how about displaying the name of the movie while you are retrieving the artwork so we can start using the interface even if all of the artwork isn't there?) [Update: there may be some precaching going on, but just not in a very intelligent manner. I have about 170 movies in my Netflix instant queue and a 1.5 Mbps DSL connection so that may contribute to the slowness displaying artwork. If you have a very fast internet connection, you will probably have minimal delay.]*No Pandora*No App support (Yet? Come on Apple, enable App support. It won't take long before we have lots of useful 3rd party apps. I'm sure Pandora would be one of the first and then NPR and local weather forecast.)*No 1080p - 720P only (Yes, most people don't have the bandwidth to support 1080p streaming over the internet, but someday we will. Also, it would be nice to be able to show your 1080p video you shot with your new camcorder or high-end DSLR.)*Rotten Tomatoes movie reviews are not available for Netflix movies.*Remote app could display the actual menus for faster selections.*Home Sharing must be activated for a specific single account. (Result: If both you and your spouse have an iTunes account you will have to choose one or the other and will only have access to media in that person's iTunes account.)UPDATE:Removed from Cons:"*Can't add internet radio stations to a favorites list (and there are hundreds if not thousands to scroll through)." Someone commented that you can add a radio station to your favorites by holding the center button down. I tried this and it works. Not sure how you're supposed to know this as it's not mentioned in the brief instruction book.
