excellent receiver..some flaws

this is my first receiver and very happy to own it...cnet rated this model excellent for sound quality, user interface and connectivity...and overall rating was high on other websites too...really like on-screen GUI...makes life easy...helpful to understand signal info...and troubleshoot if there is any problem...just bought it yesterday...connected klipsch quintet 5 speakers....planning to do YPAO calibration next..also analog (480i) to 1080p conversion is pretty decent... picture quality has improved...the advantage is having to run only a single hdmi cable to the TVupdate 12/11/2010I have been using this receiver for 2 weeks now...there are couple of issues...lip sync problem while playing blu ray movies..there is a sync adjustment... but this happened in between the movie and I had to keep adjusting it ...alternate option is to stop playing and then restart it again...then there was no lag.....also noticed sound will pass for about a sec couple of times....I expect at this price to have a better product...another issue is with updating firmware..it is straight forward but a lengthy process...should be able to do this using USB instead of burning audio CDs!!!...it worked fine though..update 1/10/2011its more than a month now...works flawlessly...I played lot of blu ray movies and there was no lip synch issue ...I guess the one that had problem might be because of disc issues.....planning to buy two more speakers to try second zone feature..overall very happy to own it..update 11/28/2011have been using this receiver for one year now...no issues so far.....also happy to see that the current selling price is only couple of dollars lower compared to what I spent a year ago..can you believe it? :-)

Great upgrade from my previous Yamaha

I own a rx-v663 and upgraded this past weekend to the RX-V667.Skipping the 665 model was a good thing.This one has a great on screen GUI for changing the settings.It's an overlay, so you don't lose the video in the background when changing settings.It pops out from the left side and then you scroll up and down to pick the settingto change. Then those options are popped up from the bottom of the screen and you scrollright and left.6 HDMI is more than enough for me, in fact I have 3 left over after changing out things.Biggest advantage is I am now able to plug in everything in to the receiver and able to changethe label that shows up on the receiver and the tv screen when changing sources.My components running into the receiver are as followsOppo BDP-83PS3Computer with HDMI interface(radeon 5770 so I get sound and audio)These next two are connected via Component video (R,G,B)Xbox 360 (optical out for audio)WiiTo run all these the Remote has 5 HDMI buttons and 6 AV buttons.I can actually choose each source independently with one button, kind of nice.I also have the YDS11 Ipod dock, it works great with the new receiver. Interface is greatly improvedwith album art being shown to the left of the song title on the screen and browsing capabilty. This really looks a lot better than it did on the RX-V663 and is another overlay screen. Now they just need a good screen saver to go with it.This would all be worthless if the sound quality did not match up with the 663.Big one for me was continued support of DSD across HDMI. The Oppo BDP-83 plays SACD disks and so doesmy PS3. The 667 has a signal information selection and from the PS3 it reports PCM as it should sincethe PS3 converts it to PCM before sending the signal to the receiver. The Oppo using the same disk reportsDSD back on the receiver.and yes the sound quality equals the 663.Sidenote: There is an audible difference in the sound when switching to Pure Direct Mode.I played John Hiatt's "Master of Disaster" which is a Hybrid SACD and switched betweenstraight and Pure Direct. Pure direct seemed to have less bass, the straight mode was obviouslymaking adjustments to the bass in the background. Honestly though this could be due to myspeaker setup as I do not have a sub-woofer. IT's a 5.0 setup on mine. Try Pure Direct Mode and see ifit makes a difference with your DSD/SACD disks. I thought the clarity was better.Setup was easy, hardest part was undoing everything I had done to get everything to work on the 663.YPAO mic setup for sound, seemed to have not changed from the last time I did it, so don't expect anythingnew here.I have not tried setting up the remote to control any other components. This did help in the endas it cut out 2 remotes and I am down to 3 now due to eliminating a switch box I no longer neededand the HDMI switch I bought that also acts as a fan for my PS3.

I've always been impressed by Yamaha products and this receiver is no exception. It's a 7.2 channel receiver that packs an insane amount of features into a modest price.Before I made the purchase, I called Yamaha's customer service guys and asked them a few questions and they were able to answer everything for me. I got right to a person who spoke English and they knew their products (and actually said they had a full lab for testing stuff).So I bought the receiver and hooked it up to my 3D TV setup, along with my Wii (component), X-box 360 (HDMI), DirecTV DVR (HDMI), Yamaha YDS-12 iPod dock and 3D Blu-ray player (HDMI). It was easy to install and I still have plenty of HDMI inputs left for future expansion. I ran the YPAO auto setup and it was over before I came back from getting a snack in the kitchen. It properly detected all of my 7.2 speakers and everything appears to be working as intended.I must say that I really love the onscreen GUI menu. It's an animated display that overlays on top of whatever I'm watching, including the 3D content from DirecTV and my BD player.I wanted a receiver with a powered Zone 2 so I could run a pair of speakers on my porch and this receiver handles that task no problem. Setup was easy, I just followed the PDF owner's manual that came in the box.I haven't tried the HDMI Audio Return Channel yet, but I do plan on using it in the future.
