5Excellent system!
By J. L. Wilkerson
There are so many choices when it comes to surround sound systems. I went with Yamaha because they have a great record of producing really quality speakers and amps. That is exactly what I got with this product. The amp is great, much better than cheaper systems, the speakers sound very nice, they produce excellent mid and high range sound. The subwoofer is perfectly adequate and rounds out the system very well. There are plenty of HDMI connections to plug in your peripherals. You will need to buy extra speaker wire if you have a large space. I have a small living room and I still needed more. The speaker wire they include is standard and is pretty low end but gets the job done if you don't want to cough up the money for pricy thick cables. I used it and everything sounds great. The automatic setup and speaker calibration is very easy to do and balances the system nicely. For the price this a really great little system. The piano black is very sharp looking as well. I noticed several reviews comment that there are better systems out there; no you are absolutely not getting a system that does everything, but you know that when you buy it. If you use a lot of Apple products I would suggest to go up a notch and get the one that does AirPlay. If you have money to spend, sure go buy something even better, because yes there are better systems. But they will cost you and for the price if you want a really basic system that has very nice sound and performance I highly recommend buying this.

4Quality system
By G. T. Hayden
There's seemingly infinite choices of brands and setups for stereos or really any electronics product out there. I chose Yamaha because they were a brand that I know to be leaders in the sound industry. I have a Yamaha acoustic guitar that is really nice, I've heard nice things about their electronic products like this stereo, and hell even Lexus recruited Yamaha to tune the exhaust note on their supercar, the LFA.About what you're getting - the stereo receiver and the subwoofer are heavy and solid, the speakers, not so much. At least not on the heavy end. The construction appears top notch. It's an attractive system. All the speakers have a little gloss to them. As I said, the satellite speakers (2 front, 2 rear, 1 center) are very light, and very small for that matter. They sound very good nonetheless. It's a really nice system for watching movies, but maybe not quite as nice for music. The speakers are just too small. If you like to really pump up your music, chances are you'll find this system's limits. The subwoofer never complains, but the smaller fronts become overdriven and/or muddy a few decibels before I'd really like them to. Not a deal breaker though, and perhaps, though unlikely, with more fine tuning of the levels and equalizers etc. I'll be able to fix that.Like I said it's really nice for movies. Go ahead and turn up the center speaker right away if you're going to watch a movie, as that's where most of the dialog comes from and music/action drowning out dialog is a common problem with any system, including this one. The subwoofer seems to defy physics; despite having only a 6" speaker it rumbles like a 12" and has terrific dynamic range, again great for movies. Much more so than the Sony 12" I had on my old system that may be a little louder, but muddled and unclear compared to this one. I guess it's really all about the box it's in which is very, very solid and well constructed.I didn't get to try the microphone thing that auto-levels your speakers so I can't comment on that yet.So in conclusion, this is a very nice system that's geared more towards tv/movies/gaming than it is music, though it won't kill you there either. It's attractive and space-saving design will fit in nicely and tightly with your decor. You can buy with confidence from a brand that's been a leader in everything-sound.

4Great for family movie time
By William C Martin
I'm not an audiophile, nor am I a serious home theater nut, so I'll keep my review short on nitty technical details. I selected the Yamaha YHT-497 home theater system to complement a newly finished family theater room in our basement. The primary factors in my decision were completeness of the system, user and technical reviews from around the web (where you can find an abundance of technical details), ease of setup, and perceived value. The YHT-497 scored well in all respects. Setup was a snap. I didn't bother with the included speaker wire, as the theater room was pre-wired. I attached all the speakers and the sub-woofer as directed in the easy-to-follow installation guide, and it fired right up. The sound is excellent to my untrained ears, with good bass, good surround, and a number of cool effects to choose from. The surround sound auto-calibration feature is nice and easy as well. Finally, I appreciate the on-screen display, which makes navigating through the more detailed menus/settings a snap. Overall, I'm very happy with the results.Okay, so why just 4 stars? My experience detailed above was with the second unit I received. The first unit I received was faulty. In short, the receiver would power on for only 5-10 seconds before shutting itself down. No, it wasn't an issue with reversed polarity of the attached speakers (the unit offers automatic protection against this), or any other component attached to the system. So I contacted Yamaha customer support - which was very good and involved minimal hold time, by the way. After working with a support technician on the phone for ~10 minutes, the issue was identified as a short circuit in one of the boards of the receiver unit itself. My options were to navigate through the warranty repair process at an authorized repair center, or to simply return the unit for a replacement (with a recommendation to opt for the latter). Thus, I returned my original unit to Amazon for an exchange. I suppose I just got a lemon... it happens. The exchange process was smooth, as is the norm for Amazon. However, it was the initial disappointment, along with the hassle of repackaging the system and lugging back to the UPS store that caused me to drop one star from the review. Now that I have a working system, I am very happy with my choice, and very happy with the result. I have been using the system for roughly one month and have not experienced any issues whatsoever. Minus the lemon, my initial selection criteria have been validated by personal experience with the system, and I would happily make the same choice again.
