Onkyo AVX-290 5.1-Channel Home Theatre Receiver/Speaker Package

Product Description

Onkyo’s AVX-290 combines the convenience of a full-featured A/V receiver and surround-speaker set with the quality assurance of one of home theater’s leading brands. Four HDMI inputs on the receiver deliver music, movies, and games in better-than ever resolution. As well as handling high-def audio from DTS and Dolby, these HDMI inputs let you enjoy 3D video and an Audio Return Channel from your compatible HDTV. Front-side on the receiver are handy analog audio and video inputs for fuss-free connection of your game console or camcorder. And on the back is a Universal Port that allows you to hook up peripherals such as an optional iPod /iPhone dock. The system packs Audyssey audio filters to opimize the sound for your living room, and user-friendly on-screen menus so you can easily adjust settings without interrupting the action. Rounding out the package are five precision-matched surround speakers and a powerful subwoofer for deep-impact bass and low-frequency effects.

4Decent Package
By jzredemann
Plenty of Input and Output options, coax, hdmi, rca, component, optical, even a universal port. Unfortunately no usb , which i thought was odd considering it had nearly every other connection known to man. The form factor is nice, the speakers are smaller but not too small. I replaced a 15 year old sony rack system with this unit and it outperforms it in every way. Highly adjustable, from speaker crossover tweaks to room distance to virtual theater settings. The default settings are pretty good, I have a larger living room with hard wood floors and the system was crisp and clear sounding right out of the box. After spending about 30 minutes adjusting and fine tuning, it was even better. My only caveat is the weak wire they ship with, but good speaker wire is easy to come by. The speakers can be wall mounted or placed on stands, and I will be purchasing a couple stands for further stereo separation. The dynamic EQ settings work great, as dialogue can so easily be overpowered in movies and TV shows by music and special effects, so having a built in compressor saves you the trouble of a separate unit. The unit does generate a bit of heat and is well ventilated. Do not stack anything on top of it or place it in a tight area.

4Good if you get for the right price
By Bruce Salisbury
I got this for $200 shipped and can't say I would spend any more than that for the AVX-290. It sounds like a $200 5.1 system and is good for a small room. The multi HDMI output is great. You won't be blown away with the sound the bass kinda lacks but hey if you get it for cheap it is a great solution to improve your TV speakers.

3Decent budget system for a small room
By Sean
The included speakers.. leave a lot to be desired. Thankfully, I already had solid front R/L bookshelf speakers. Also, the receiver lacks a pre-amp subwoofer output - it's amplified only, so if you want to upgrade to a powered sub in the future you're limited to finding one that can take speaker-level inputs. Or modifying the receiver to add a line-level sub output. That out of the way, the receiver seems to be pretty solid. The OSD is basic, but allows you to do any setup functions that can be accessed through the receiver's front-panel setup button. Only gripe about the interface is you can't add radio presets through the remote; you have to use the front panel to do so.The included sub is surprisingly decent for a passive sub, if not a little boomy, and the receiver has an adjustable crossover. Overall, the receiver has a lot more features than I expected for what I paid for it.Oddly enough, the included speakers are all 6 ohm; expect closer to 80 watts when run with 8 ohm speakers.
