The Little Laptop that Could!

Spent a long while debating over tablet vs. small laptop. Finally decided on this Samsung Series 3 NP350U2A-A01US 12.5-Inch Laptop with i3 Intel processor. Would have preferred the i5 processor that was featured in all the CNET reviews I looked at, but even with the i3 this is still a steal.The design is sleek and professional. The keyboard is true to size and is very easy to use. Even the touchpad does not slow me down. Other reviews (both on Amazon and on CNET) said had a little lag between using touchpad and keyboard, but I have not had any issues.The best part is the weight and the battery life. The extra 4 hours in battery life is SOOOOO worth the extra money over the Samsung Series 3 NP300 earlier model that is still offered on Amazon. There is little to no heat from the laptop because the vent is facing to the rear and not located in the base like a lot of other laptop models.The weight is around 3lbs. This means it is small like a tablet and I can slip it into my purse but it still has the full functionality of a larger laptop. My main use for this is to run PowerPoint presentations... can't really do that efficiently with tablets or netbooks because they just don't have the processing ability. So if you need a solid PC for personal use, but still like to have something that you can carry around easily... this is definitely the one to pick!HELPFUL HINTS --- The product description does not indicate that the laptop comes with a VGA adaptar as part of the included peripherals. So, don't buy a VGA adaptar, you get one in the box with the computer already.Also, if you are looking for a laptop sleeve to protect your new baby... all sleeves that fit the 13"Mac Air will also fit this laptop.Bottom line... this is a great machine with a lot of power for the price. LOVE IT!

Awesome light and powerful machine

Very nice machine. Super small and light with a big enough screen to actually use. Keyboard is full size and very type-able. Super thin due to built in 6 hour battery. Has a nice feature which limits battery charging to 80% which is supposed to allow 1000 charges instead of the normal 300 or so. Screen is good, not great, but has matte finish which is terrific in bright places. Starts up from sleep in just a few seconds. Basically a Mac Air for less than half the price!

I purchased this through Amazon warehouse. It came like new, but repackaged as a refurb unit.First impressions:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. Sure this is not a Samsung Series 9 laptop, but I can justify the purchase because of the price at around $450.The laptop is light. The screen doesn't tilt back that much, and feels like it would break it off it excess force is used. Just be careful.The screen's colors aren't that great, but I knew that. The screen is matte, not glossy!The battery life is great. The battery is the reason for most of the weight.I don't care for the VGA adapter. The connector seems flimsy when plugged in to the laptop. Ultimately, the VGA dongle should be used when stationary so it is not a deal breaker.Installation notes:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------This laptop should have an indicator light that function lock is enabled. My unit came with function locked on so my arrow keys were doing the page up, page down, home, and end instead of up down, left right. As this unit came as a refurb with a fresh install, it was necessary to install the Samsung Control Center software for Windows 7 (I believe this is called Easy display manager for Windows XP) to use some of the function keys (for example, the brighness up/down. I do not mean f1, f2, or f3).The Samsung control center allows you to configure the fan to be quiet. The cpu fan is definitely noisy at 100%, especially in a quiet room. But I cannot hear the fan under casual use (internet, email, word processing). Once the samsung control center is installed, there is a keyboard shortcut to turn off the fan.The trackpad is not the same quality as a Macbook, but it is decent. After some configurations using the Elan software, I got multi-touch working.For technical users only:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------The laptop can be opened, but clearly it wasn't designed for a non-technical person to do.**Opening the laptop may void warranty.**The hard drive has the standard 2.5" hard drive height, but its height is smaller than a standard drive. I was able to connect a Crucial M4 2.5" SSD (CT256M4SSD1) so any another 7mm SSD will work. My other Crucial M4 SSD (CT256M4SSD2) does NOT cleanly fit in the laptop. Basically, the laptop case wouldn't snap back into place.The 4GB ram stick is NOT soldered to the motherboard.There is only 1 ram slot available. I was able to upgrade the ram to 8GB using a Corsair 8 GB Module (CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9).updated : 6/27/2012-add more cpu fan description.-clarified hard drive dimensions.updated : 7/2/2012-updated the information on the ram. Used Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD1.-updated the information on the hard drive. Used Corsair 8GB 1333MHz ram CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9.
