4Definitive Technology Solocenima XTR
By J. Moss
Definitive Technology Solocenima XTRSo here it goes, I bought this from crutchfield, but the first one I had to return because it was defective, to say the least this was a pain in the ass !, but ok, shit happens and it's a very new product.Overall Crutchfield was great there customer service is second to none & they made it right. I received the second one and they sent it by fright and double packed it. The first one they didn't double pack & just shipped it in its original box. I'm in California so you can imagine what a cross country trip did to the thing but from now on I think they will ship this the more responsible way.I also spoke to the Def Tech support, they too are great, and suggested I return it, super nice guys !!.Ok now for the important stuff, the XTR feels like  quality gear, super easy to set up, with a good amount of HDMI inputs (3) There is a little pop when you fist turn it on, and switching between sources is not super fast, but hopefully firmware updates will continue to make this bar, better, faster, stronger !!The remote is fine, easy to use, kinda feels cheep, but whatever. (ya feel the apple tv remote & it feels amazing at that thing is $100 bucks !)Also be great if there was an on/off switch for the Sub only. One BIG negative but not relevant to the sound is the lights on the bar, no way to turn them off or dim them, they need to fix this in a firmware update, ASAP !, kinda annoying all around !THE SOUND !HD TV:  HD movies and HD  TV Shows.  The XTR sounds great, the clarity on voice is terrific and the overall balance is good, I'd love to have a tad more control over the overall EQ, but at least you can control the sub & center volume. The sub, sounds very good, I have never used a sub or had an audio system in my living room, but dame this thing gives a nice big realistic feel & adds killer impact. As far as "surround sound" with HD TV  mostly with Dolby Digital (HBO etc) I haven't felt it, sure the bar is clear, full, balanced, but it's not true 5.1. (firmware update ?) It didn't really envelop you.Sound Blu Ray:PCM & Dolby True HD with the Prometheus Blu Rayvoice was super clear, bass sounded great, overall clarity was excellent and played plenty loud, but the surround sound or a 5.1 experience, not really. So at the end of the day the bar rocks, but has a few shortcomings and really is not going to give you a totally immersive 5.1 feeling, perhaps other audio codes and different bly rays will give a slightly different effect, but otherwise this is one way too expensive and great sounding bar, with terrific bass. Some tweaks will be welcome and I'm interested in seeing if Def Tech, really keeps the ball rolling with firmware updates, only time will tell. Now I gota go make some $$ to pay for this thing !!

1DEFECTIVE
By Stephen Suckenik
As with other reviewers my unit was defective on arrival. It turned on OK then it just turned itself off over twenty times in a two hour interval. Some times I would turn it on and it would just shut itself off several times in a row. Other times it would operate for a few minutes and then turn itself off. On a few occasions the sound would just max out on its own and I had no control over it. This is very disappointing in a two grand component from a high end company with a good reputation. Unlike some reviewers who gave the company another chance I will look elsewhere. As far as performance I was not impressed with what little sound I could hear. Since I was only listening to the sound from cable and it may not the best,I can't really condemn the sound. I agree with one reviewer who recommended that you buy it at a local store since packing and unpacking this thing is a pain and not really for hand carry.

2Interesting that mine also did not work.

So I have always loved Definitive Tech speakers ever since the BP 2000 days. I have an excellent Mythos ST set up that is awesome for TV watching movies and pretty much everything. Alas, we moved to a new home with a family room where the whole system could not fit and I was in the market for a more acceptable sound bar. Being pretty loyal to anything definitive technology I bought the first XTR in stock locally. My first impression was consistent with a quality product. This is a $2K soundbar after all. It is pretty easy to set up with nice feet for the bar if you are setting it on a table and also comes with nice mounting template. One nice thing is several HDMI inputs and an HDMI out to the TV. It feels nice and heavy and sat on the table in front of the tv solidly. Basically, pretty plug and play. I plugged the HDMI tivo in and an hdmi out. Plugged the soundbar in, then plugged the wireless sub in. It connected without a problem and I was rolling.I was able to watch some TV and movies with the unit on day one. Overall, I was pretty happy with the speech of normal viewing HDTV, ABC shows etc. However, on shows like the Voice I found that the background tended to muffle the singing. By putting it in movie mode and turning down the bass it did improve. On the flip side I also watched some "Kung Fu Panda 2" it really did sound great for a sound bar with the sub adding nicely to the effects. I think as far as movies this was going to sound great! Then the problems started, of course I have a tivo so try to use the tivo remote for anything watching TV related. Now I was happy to learn that the soundbar actually has both an IR passthrough, and IR learning. So the Bar will learn the tivo remote. This worked except for the volume, no matter what I did I couldn't get it to pick up the tivo remote for volume control....ummmm, seriously what is the point then! Sigh, alas the tivo remote can learn IR as well so I was able to match the tivo remote to the def tech remote. So I thought I was good to go. Then I start watching tv, and then boom the bar turns off. Hmmmm, that was random. I turn it back on, and watch, 30 minutes later off again. And so on and so on with the bar just turning off. Totally, sucks! This thing didn't work for one day. Needless, to say I packed it up and returned it. I am lucky to have bought it local. After, that experience just didn't know if I wanted another one. So I have decided to wait and see if more people have problems. Needless to say, the only other review at this time also got a defective unit? hmmmm?Overall my advise is if you do buy one, go local as you don't want to have to ship this giant box back!!!! Perhaps the quality control just isn't there yet.Pros:Nice solid feel, no cheap plasticSub instantly pairs to sound bar and is wireless so lots of options on placementGreat sounding for movies, perhaps the best as sound bars goNice packageHDMI pass through! AwesomeCons:Quality control? UghCouldn't really get sound right for some TV shows (annoying)Limited EQ you have movie and music. And a bass level, and "center channel volume" that is it. So if you don't like something you pretty much have nothing you can do about the soundAgree with other review, bright front panel lights. If you were in the dark they are beaming at you!Remote, eh....it is okOnscreen display is somewhat 1980s but functional (Seriously a sony receiver can put up a nice display like a playstation for $500 bucks)Don't count on the IR picking up your remote!Overall, I was really sad, as I rushed out to buy this beast! Now I am going to sit back and see what other reviews are saying. First Def Tech product I didn't like.
