5finally a head unit with everything I want!
By Kyle
i installed the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X996 after having bluetooth trouble with the KDC-BT952HD. it is very similar to the KDC-BT952HD, with the addition of a better equalizer. so far everything has been great. there is a known issue that the equalizer will reset when a phone call is made. Be sure to update the firmware from kenwood's site. Burn it to a CDR instead of loading it on a flash drive, otherwise you will have media issues. bluetooth takes a little long to auto connect, but pandora loads up easily. outgoing calls are pretty decent, almost on pair with an alpine. the sound is amazing once you get the EQ setup.the equalizer really lets you dial in your sound signature. there are so many sound options. you can turn on highway sound, which I guess helps boost the audio so that your highway driving doesn't drown it out. i'm not sure if it uses the mic to adjust, but it seems to help. I like the sound elevator, this boosts the midrange. you can add echo to make the sound field larger as well.there are choices of selecting speaker and car sizes. you can adjust the position of the audio in the car.also, some people complain about glare...i don't have this issue at all. i understand that the face of the headunit is shiny (in fact, every head unit's face is shiny) and curved, but i can clearly see through the plastic to see the display..a couple of things are a con:-it can take a while for bluetooth to connect. sometimes i have to force my phone to connect.-the xover issue is present out of the box (if you make a bluetooth call, your xover will be reset). update the firmware to solve the issue. i was happy to see that none of my settings except the demo mode were reset after updating the firmware, even after hitting the reset button (requirement to finish updating)...hmm-sometimes the unit will get bt stereo and pandora confused when i switch between them. i'd recommend pausing one before switching the input-the outgoing audio when making calls is not as good as an alpine unit. it is somewhat tin can sounding.-i can't deactivate sources. i wish i could get rid of xm and hd radio, as i never use them.-doesn't handle scratched CDs very well-mutes audio for a few seconds when ejecting a CD, not sure of the reason why this happens-loads the pandora stations slowly and will not let me skip to the end of the list. i have a jvc headunit that loaded them instantly and let me roll to the endpros:amazing sound, one of the best sounding and loudest head units i've ever heardthe equalizer alone should be a reason to buy the unit. comine that up with all the other sound options, you almost have too much customizationpandora and bt audio are crystal clearhas the ability to display SMS messages and auto replycall quality over bluetooth is decent, much better than some bargain unitsID3 tagging is passed through from my phone to the unit, so i know which songs i'm playinghas rear input, for some reason this is getting more difficult to find as many manufacturers are switching to front input (alpine)voltage for the subwoofer is strongcomes with a really nice bag for the faceplatepros far outweigh the cons. this head unit is a keeper

3Awesome sound quality....but xover resets
By Brianimal
This unit sounds great and menus are easy to navigate. The Bluetooth works great for me. The main problem and the reason for this review is the xover problem. Every time you take a call via Bluetooth the xover resets. I hope I didn't blow my 800.00 dynaudios before realizing. They made a loud pop!!! Also the display is almost impossible to read during the day. It has so much glare on it. Hope this helps anyone considering this unit.

3GLARE!!
By Jeff Brough
The features on this Kenwood receiver are incredible, but it doesn't matter because I cannot see the text on it!!!!! Seriously, the color changing display is neat but it makes the contrast horrible.I would trade features for a better display.
