3Fits certain needs
By J. Platner
Pros:+Small Form Factor+Great sound+Easy setup+Wireless accessCons:-User Interface-Limited remote with poor sensitivity-Limited front panel controlsI chose this unit kinda knowing what I was getting into. Other reviews online are accurate and fair and all comparative receivers are much larger and more costly. It had a nice small form factor that included HDMI input processing. It also has great sound and relatively easy setup (about an hour out of the box). The sound is great and I only use the 2.1 (2 front speakers and a powered sub-woofer). The calibration mic works great for balancing your specific speakers orientation to the best performance. The wireless access is nice for firmware updates although I am unsure what exactly the last 3 updates did! Unfortunately the user interface is very basic and the remote is rather useless. You select your viewing input (TV, DVD, Console) on a simple graphic UI. The intended design of the system was supposed to eliminate all your other remotes. However with modern cable, satellite and DVR systems you will absolutely still need all those remotes to maintain your sanity. The only thing I use the Yamaha remote for is input selection and volume. Moreover, the only front panel controls are the on/off button and the large volume. It would have been very helpful to include front panel input selection (thus practically eliminating the cheesy remote). If you are looking for a simple, small, HDMI capable receiver this may be for you. If you need more control and probably less remotes, look elsewhere.

4Great little package
By Y. Brown
This unit was very easy to install although finding the IR receivers on the other components was challenging. I wish the remote had numbers on it. I understand making it simple but it makes for slow channel access. I found myself having to keep the digital cable box remote for speed and convenience. I love the internet radio access and the ipod dock is a definite add-on we were glad we purchased. The unit is small and well laid out. This is a good looking piece. Unfortunately we have the tv in a corner and the surround sound is okay but not great. I think if this was set out properly it would work quite well. I do recommend this to anyone looking for a universal remote and good quality amplifier.

3This product is only okay.

I was able to quickly set up the YMC-700 receiver with the other new equipment that I purchased at the same time: blu-ray dvd player, samsung hd-tv. I have been able to get most functions to work: Internet Radio, Pandora Radio, etc. To access Pandora and the Internet, this has worked quite well. There have been very few problems here - there have been occasional internet connections dropped. I use Netgear Powerline connectors throughout the house to provide ethernet connections throughout the house - the samsung tv and yamaha receiver are both connected to the internet this way. The Netgear Powerline connectors work great. The problem I have is connecting to my netowrk to access my music library. I have done as yamaha stated - ensure the pc has microsoft media player 11 installed. I have had problems with this connection when the pc's on my network were microsoft xp as well as now with new pc's using microsoft 7. I can get the network connected at times by changing the yamaha's network settings, but this only last as long as everything is powered up. Once I power down and power up, the connection drops. Remember, the internet connection still works fine in these situations - it's only the connection to my network that is the problem.I have sent a message to yamaha for support and received unsatisfatory support. I am attempting again to get specific support from yamaha. I'll update this review when I have more information.Update (2/18/2011) - Yamaha did provide information a few times as to the possible problem. This does appear to be related to the security. I went through various steps to determine where the problem could be. This is intermittent, and up to now, I am just living with this.Although I may not have full access to my library of music on my network, Yamaha did recently update the system with Pandora. This is a free music service, which once you establish an account, can be accessed via the Yamaha or any pc. This free service allows up to 40 hours of listening per month. Not bad. I started to use this so much, I ended becoming a paid subscriber (only $36/year). The addition of this feature makes the library access problem less of a problem.
