Onkyo SKS-HT690 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker System (Black, 6)

Product Description

Introducing an affordable speaker set that will bring a deeper dimension to your movies, games, and music. Comprising a powered subwoofer, two-way front and center speakers, and full-range satellites-all gloss-finished-the SKS-HT690 delivers lifelike surround sound with finesse. Here, style is backed by serious substance. Subtle front-on curves are complemented by a rounded rear section that counteracts unwanted standing waves. Cradle one of these speakers in your palm and you'll feel a reassuring heft. Reason? It's Onkyo's newly developed high-density resin, which provides superb rigidity and resistance to vibration. The down-firing subwoofer, meanwhile, employs a 10 (25 cm) cone to deliver a tight and balanced low-end.

4Not for audiophiles, but a steal for ave. Joe on a budget
By A. Weber
Since there is no review of these speakers anywhere on the internet I feel some added responsibility to put one up.I am no CNET, but here we go:The Good:They look high end with a high gloss piano-black finish. Surprisingly powerful for the size. Music sounds good.... not just for movies. The Bad:Closed boxes and the connections are push terminal, which seems kind of low end. I had trouble getting my large speaker wires into the terminal. The center speaker is a bit underwhelming, but blends well if the front speakers are close enough. The bottom line:If you want a great bang for your buck and are on a serious budget, then these are a deal. MSRP at 450 puts them up against "The Pioneer SP-PK21BS" and the "Engery Take Classic 5.1", which is some stiff competition in the budget space (probably why they lowered the price). I would not pay $450 for these speakers simply for the connections and being closed box. However at $225 (as of 12/31/2011) and with the Pioneer CNET choice speakers on back order these things start looking good. If $175 difference from the Energy Take Classic helps you convince your wife you need surround sound, then go for it.I have these connected to an Onkyo TX-SR607 and am replacing some Polk Monitor Series speakers. Out of the box I thought I would have to return these because of the size and quality of the connections. So I only setup the front and surround sound at first. Well, I was really impressed by the sound after playing about a half dozen songs from different genres. So I unboxed everything, sub and all, and then did Audyssey config. Watching TV was a bit getting use to because my Polks (just two speakers) do a great job filling the room. You really need to have these in surround mode to get the most of them. With only the front and center this system you do not feel engaged. It reminds me of the old says when sound came from the TV. However, once I get it into a surround sound mode it all comes together and sounds great. I put in Salt and Avatar and both sounded fantastic. If you have more money, then spend it and get top notch speakers. If I didn't feel guilty buying such things (instead of spending it on family) I would have dished out a few hundred more. However, for the price I cannot help being very satisfied. I'll probably incorporate my Polks and make this 7.1.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ UPDATE ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Well, I decided to return these after a week. The center channel just was not enough for me and I knew it would nag me. I dished out the extra 2 hundred for the Pioneer speakers, which CNET says are the best sounding speakers at $400. Well, I can't disagree. At low volume or a small room the Onkyo do sound good. However, the center speaker on the Pioneer blows me away. I cranked it up and there is no comparison. So I would have to lower these now to a 3.5, but I'll leave the starts at 4 since you cannot do half stars.

4Fills the room nicely
By SageSlinger
Own a TX-SR503 Onkyo Receiver. Picked up these speakers as its mate. Had a Polk Audio/Cerwin Vega hybrid system before. My den is 15x25 with my about viewing area about 12-14 feet from my flat screen. This 5.1 speaker system fills the room nicely. The sub box was larger than I thought it would be, but being a 10" sub it works nicely. The center channel is a little smaller than I would have expected, given size of the sub. It is crisp and has good sound, lacks maybe a little of the middle low range a larger mid channel would deliver. All in all a very good speaker system for the buy. Music and video both play nicely. It is a definite upgrade and good for those on a budget. Their sound has added to my audio experience.

This is a very nice speaker system i got these to go with my 6 ohm energy tower speakers as this was the only set i could find that was 6 ohm and for the price range i expected less but wow these are very well made very stylish and solid and sound amazing. Just a heads up the pwr sub is much larger then the picture makes it look its massive and very sexy with great full rich bass. the packaging of the product was top notch and with Prime i got them in 2 days. if your looking for stylish well made set of HT speakers with rocking pwr sub for budget price look no futher you will be pleased with this set.
