4Good experience so far
By Kevin
I purchased this HTIB for $200 and have been impressed thus far. As with any HTIB, this system is designed to work right out of the box with it's own components. While the speakers are in plastic enclosures and the sub in a particle board one, the sound is surprisingly decent. Don't expect the highest fidelity sound and if you're an audiophile, skip this and get something more expensive. I've not had any problems with it so far. To me, there is a surprising number of features that this kit makes affordable. I was pleased to see that it supports Netflix, Hulu Plus and Pandora. Samsung has a variety of apps that you can install that allow the system to do more.Features:Two features I can't wait to try out are the HDMI+CEC that Samsung has incorporated into their newer TV's and sound systems and the Samsung Remote App. With HDMI+CEC feature, you can control your Blu-ray player or receiver and TV with the same remote, no more hunting down 3 or 4 different remotes. For those with an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, you can use your iDevices as a remote control with the Samsung Remote app.Things to consider:The speakers sound fine in my room, but those with a more discerning ear could probably pick them apart. You can always snip the cords and wire up your own speakers. Chances are, if you can tell when a speaker is out of phase, you know how to wire up your own speakers. I can update once start watching some more movies and pump up the volume a little. The kit that I bought didn't come with HDMI, optical/TOShttp://amzn.com/dp/B0056H9K62/?tag={komponelektr-20}, or component cables. It came with a single composite (yellow) and one for the FM tuner. You may need to purchase extra cables. While this kit is capable of using WiFi, there is no built in WiFi. You'll have to buy a separate USB adapter for it. Alternatively, you could just use the ethernet. In the back, you get an HDMI out, component and composite out, stereo audio in, optical audio in, USB for the WiFi adapter, ethernet, and all your speaker jacks.Basically, this is your run-of-the-mill HTIB. What sets it apart from other systems in it's price range are the installable apps and connectivity to iDevices and Android devices. If your Samsung TV supports HDMI+CEC, you also get the added benefit of not needing extra remotes.I'm pleased with my purchase and the only reason why I'm knocking a star off is because of the included speakers. I understand that for the price point, something had to give and in a way, I'm glad it was the speakers and not the overall features of the system. I can always upgrade the speakers with a little bit of splicing and soldering, but it's really hard to upgrade the main unit without having to pay a whole lot more.Hopefully this review is a bit more fair and unbiased, and I can definitely help answer any further questions. If you're anything like me, you want to know everything before making a purchase and sometimes it's the little things that don't show up in a product's description or spec sheet that make the biggest differenceLong term use review:After living with this system, I have noticed only one problem and that seems to have been fixed in the last software upgrade. Previous to this upgrade, perhaps once a night (in about a 4-5 hour session) during Netflix streaming, the system would freeze. It's a strange thing to happen, but it would just happen. I haven't noticed it recently, so I'm glad that Samsung is actively working to make even their older products better. The infrequent, but helpful, upgrades are what keeps this system at it's 4 star rating. It's still a very good system to me and that was the only problem I've had in living with it. I would still recommend this system to a friend looking for an inexpensive HTIB set up

4Decent
By Benjamin
This home theater in a box isn't going to wow any true audiophile - nor is it meant to.It's an inexpensive system designed to improve on the (most likely) horrible sound quality of your flat panel TV. It does everything it's supposed to do, and does a decent job at doing it.The speakers are the same quality of speakers you would get with any "in a box" system of this budget. They are hard plastic on all sides (the grill is also plastic, not fabric, which is probably more durable anyway with my kids). The speakers have a keyhole type slot in the back for a screw if you wanted to hang them on the wall. All the speakers have there length of speaker cable permanently attached to them (which is also very common with box home theater systems). Each length of cable has a colored connector on the end so when you are plugging them into the receiver, it's easy to know where they go. If you need more cable for the back speakers, you could splice in additional wire without much hassle (and if you REALLY wanted to use these with a different receiver, you could cut the connectors off all together, but your really wouldn't want to do that - these speakers are matched to the rest of the system and aren't meant to be used on different systems). The subwoofer sounds pretty good. The speaker cover on the subwoofer is fabric, by the way. It's a passive subwoofer (no separate power cable), but it certainly has pretty decent bass for what it is.The receiver is of decent quality for it's price. It has inputs for optical audio and a standard red/white RCA jack. If you have a newer HDMI 1.4 TV, it will use the audio return channel over HDMI to pull sound from your tv (and the digital devices connected to the TV).Our Samsung plasma is two years old and doesn't support ARC, so we connected a digital audio cable from the tv to the receiver to pull digital audio into the home theater. This works as it should. The 5.1 surround sound from OTA tv is sent to the receiver and comes out it's speakers. The TV detects that a receiver is attached and automatically turns off the speakers in the TV when the receiver is on. Other devices plugged into the TV via HDMI also pass through digital audio to the receiver when you switch the TV input to that device. We have an Xbox and an Apple TV and they both work well. One note is that if your device isn't passing on 5.1 (or better) digital audio - the receiver will only output 2.1 audio. It doesn't do any processing on the digital audio from the optical jack - whatever it gets is output (no dolby pro-logic fake surround from the optical jack). The receiver will output via component and HDMI in hd. It will also output via composite, but what's the point of that? It would look like crap. Also note that you can not upscale DVDs if you are connected with component cables (this is the same for all newer players - they are not allowed to upscale to an analog connection so you can't steal the video stream). The blu-ray player is pretty standard. It's a little slower to load disks than some higher end players - but it's not too bad. It will upscale DVDs if you want.It has an ethernet port and a USB port on the back for a Samsung wifi stick. There is a USB port on the front of the player for playing music/movies/photos off of a USB stick. It also will control an iPod if connected via the sync cable. An FM tuner is built in. It's reception was okay considering how far we are from anywhere. The Smart Hub supports Netflix/Hulu/Vudo/and Blockbuster among others. The apps all work - but are slower and more clunky than using a higher end product for this (like the Apple TV for Netflix and the Xbox for Hulu). They work - but it's nothing to write home about. The remote is similar to all newer Samsung remotes. It will also control your TV out of the box if you have a Samsung. The manual has codes for most other popular tvs, as well.Overall - it's a decent system. It is, of course, not a high end product. It's not meant to be.

4Good value for money.
By William E Grimm
Main points of review: very good blu-ray playback, decent audio quality, unique audio connectors. It's inexpensive so while the blu-ray playback is great, don't expect Bose audio performance. If you're going to throw ~$200 at a home theater system, this is a good one to buy.Be warned you won't be able to use older speaker wiring that you (like me) laid under your carpet a few years ago - the jacks are specific to this unit. Given that limitation and the overall quality vs. price, I give this unit 4/5 stars.
