5Great Home Theater System
By Michael_e00
After careful consideration, I chose to purchase this 897 system for my home. I mainly purchased the system to listen to music with, but it makes movies sound great! I decided to purchase Yamaha after listening to my friends Yamaha receiver and I was blown away. His has been running 5 years strong and has no sign of slowing down. I particularly like to options which come pre-loaded into the receiver for watching sports, sci-fi, spectacular, adventure, gaming selections, pro logic, and the NEO option is awesome too. The only downside is the sub woofer, which technically is not a downside but a preference. I purchased this system bundle because of the air-play capabilities and the 10" sub which comes with the system. Now the sub is not bad, but after listening to my friends sub which he got on special, you will find that you need at least 200+watt sub for music enjoyment to be fully satisfied. The sub handles all rock music and movies just fine, there's no problem there. But if you intend to listen to music which is very bassy, then I suggest you up grade. I will upgrade to the YST-SW315 at a later point. Don't let this discourage you, the speakers kick ass and sound very clean. After all, Yamaha is a premium source for sound enjoyment.Yamaha YST-SW315 10-Inch Digital Pro Series Subwoofer (Black)

5I felt guilty about buying it, until I listened to it...
By Deep Roy
The major feature I wanted was a receiver with AirPlay and, boy, this thing delivers beautiful AirPlay sound! The iPad AV control was pretty good too but it didn't control everything. For example, I couldn't set up MAC filtering, you have to do that through a video monitor and remote control. ( note: I called up yahmaha and learned that it wasn't possible for my neighbors to use the receiver's AirPlay feature unless they were on my wireless network; so MAC filtering was unnecessary! )Overall, the music I heard sounded great; I was thrilled to be able to control the radio ( tuner ) from my bed this morning via my iPad!I decided to wire my musical keyboard to the receiver as well and it sounded terrific; the "set up" couldn't have been any easier: all I had to do was plug my keyboard into the "aux audio" and then tap the "aux audio" button on my iPad to route the audio properly.Besides that, I was amazed to see how eagerly Amazon exchanged my "Yamaha YHT-595BL" for the "Yamaha YHT-897."I couldn't be happier! ;-)

5Great System! With amazing sound for the price!
By E. Pernela
I've had the Yamaha YHT-897 5.1 for about 6 months. I wanted to wait for a while to see how the system works before I wrote anything about it. So far the system has been everything it said. When I bought the system I placed an order to upgrade the speaker wire to RCA 14-gauge, after reading other reviews stating that this move is a must, I didn't want to wait until after I opened the box to order. The difference between the Yamaha stock wire and the 14-gauge is crazy. No comparison, Yamaha looks like you could rip it apart with ease and the 14-guage is super strong and thick. So if anyone was complaining about the sound, it might be that because the sound that comes out of this system is very good. I didn't do a test comparison of the two, but with the 14-gauge, it sounds amazing.Pros:Amazing soundThe HDMI CEC is great! Switching back and forth from DVD to T.V. is 1 sec transition. So fast. It's nice to press one button on one remote for this. No flipping back and forth. The 5-channel is great - you can have tons of preset options for sound but the direct sound and standard options are great. I don't like the gimmicks of other settings, I like true sound coming from the source of the blueray and this works great.Late night watching is also great with DRC. Watching a show with the wife next to you sleeping and a car crashes which is not as big as it should works when you don't want to wake the wife!YPAO worked prefect. I measured every speaker and YPAO was 100% spot on. (Make sure all windows are shut, no sounds what so ever besides what's coming out of the speakers. I had a dog running around the first time and it messed up the settings)Network is great - people complain about no WiFi but I hate WiFi, it always craps out on me where I live, so I love that I can hook it up directly to my router via cable. Super fast connection with no problems but maybe it would be good to have both options.Cons:AirPlay sucks. I have a 2012 Panasonic and the menu never turns off, there is no screen saver function, so after 1 hour of playing AirPlay on my T.V. I would have AirPlay on my screen for a day or two if I forgot to turn it off! Not good. If you have a non-plasma T.V. then this is not a big deal for you. For me I will never us AirPlay and it was one of their huge selling points.Sometimes if I turn on the Receiver first, then the T.V. I don't get sound. The Motherboard flips/switches back and forth but then sets with no sound. So I have to turn on the T.V. first then the Receiver and I don't have any problems... maybe a future update will fix this.Overall this system is everything I wanted in a mid-range sound system. It delivers a big punch to blue-ray movies and CD's are very good. I have to be careful now not to get my neighbors mad at me!I have not used the Eco Settings.I recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to fork over 1k for a system!
