Excellent value, great features
By Qpgmr
This 6.1 reciever offers 110 w/channel with subwoofer output. Sony has clearly worked to make the receiver smarter to provide the best audio experience with minimal intervention from the user: a microphone input (mic provided) automatically locates each speaker attached and balances all outputs. If you're interested in simply having great home theater experience, without excessive tweaking, this is the reciever for you.Pros - multiple a/v inputs, with support for component video and and optical connections for dvd audio.Cons - no upsampling video sources (component output from component input only), no optical connection for cd players.

A Good Receiver, With Some Minor Annoyances
By Buddy S
I purchased the Sony STR-DG500 6.1 receiver as a replacement for a five year old Sony STR-SE501 5.1 receiver. The SE501 was purchased as part of a home theater in a box system and was in need of a repair. As is the case today with much electronic equipment that needs to go to the repair shop, paying a relatively small additional amount for the purchase of a new receiver seemed to be a more attractive alternative than paying the cost of repair for the old receiver and being without any receiver at all for several weeks while the repair was accomplished. I purchased my DG500 at Circuit City. The new receiver, which was on sale and with an additional CC mail in rebate, cost $160 plus state sales tax.I have now had the DG500 for about a month. Initially, I hooked it up to my existing Sony SA-VE230 speaker system, which consists of a 50 watt powered sub-woofer and five speakers. These speakers, with the old receiver, sounded great, especially with Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 program material. The bottom line is that, with the new DG500, the sound is even better than that produced by my old receiver. I attribute the improvement to the fact that the DG500 has an adjustment for the cross-over frequency (the frequency at which the sub-woofer comes into play) and it is possible to either crank up or turn down the bass to suit your taste. (The old receiver had only a "Bass Boost" button which was either on or off - only two choices.)Both my new and old receiver have a multitude of inputs and numerous settings which are comparable, but there are a couple of other improvements in the new receiver worth noting. The auto-calibration device with the new receiver worked like a charm. Within five minutes, all of the speakers were automatically adjusted for the proper levels, distances and balance. In addition, while both receivers have a blue light on the front panel which illuminates whenever the receiver is performing Dolby 5.1 or DTS decoding, the blue light on the old receiver was annoyingly bright and was especially noticeable when the room was darkened to watch a movie. (The blue light could not be dimmed, even when the other lights on the front panel were dimmed.) The blue light on the new receiver is more muted; it can be seen when the room is bright and is not objectionable when the room is darkened. After about two weeks, I decided to take advantage of the 6.1 feature in the DG500 and purchased a rear center surround speaker. The additional speaker seems to have improved the surround sound effect of 5.1 programming, but I have not yet had an opportunity to listen to the system with a DVD containing 6.1 output.Unfortunately, I cannot say that the DG500 was an improvement over my old receiver in every department. First, with my old receiver, the speaker wires were connected to spring clips in the rear of the receiver. Instead, the DG500 has posts with locking knobs as the speaker connections. I assume someone thinks that these are an improvement over spring clips, but while I do not recall ever having a problem connecting speaker wires to spring clips, the locking knobs on my new receiver proved to be very temperamental. On my first try, two of five speakers did not work at all, but with some fiddling with the position of the wires in the locking mechanism, all of the speakers eventually worked.Further, using the remote with the set-up menu for adjusting virtually every setting on the receiver proved to be very cumbersome and frustrating. After a number of attempts, I finally go the hang of it sufficiently to make the adjustments I wanted, but navigating through the set-up menu did take quite a while to get used to.Finally, the front of the new receiver has a more sleek and streamlined appearance than my old receiver. The problem with this is that the labels containing the names of the different buttons and other controls are so small and faint, I usually can not read them with only the ambient light in the room. I imagine that some day I will have memorized where each control is located, but until then I frequently need a flashlight to read the labels. However, I usually use the remote to control the functions of the receiver and the labels for the buttons on the remote are easy to read and the remote itself is easy to use.As indicated above, the principal way I have to evaluate the performance of the DG500 receiver is to compare it with the performance of my old Sony receiver, with which I was very satisfied until it broke. I am also satisfied with the DG500. The sound quality produced by the DG500 receiver rates five stars in my opinion, but the difficulties described above, particularly the lack of user friendliness of the set-up menu, bring my rating down to four stars. This entry level receiver, however, has numerous useful features and offers a lot of bang for the buck. I recommend it to anyone who does not mind dealing with the relatively minor problem with the set-up.

Quite pleased

A couple years ago I got a projector for the "big screen effect", and decided to finally get my mini Advents out of storage for the surround sound. My OLD Pioneer receiver worked ok, but I decided it was time to upgrade. I have 30 year old Speaker Lab (build 'em yourself) speakers up front with the Advents in back. The only complaint I have with this unit is there is no way to connect a turn table (yes, I'm old). So I kept the Pioneer for dedicated service to the record player.I have my son hook everything up as he is taking networking in school. For him it's a breeze. I don't even look at the directions. I just say "here".Having said that; I think this thing is great! If you are my age and can go back 30 years to your first sound system, you paid a lot more to get a simple 200 watt system (WOW) for your records and cassettes. Ahh.... technology.I love this thing! I can understand that some folks want something better, but for 95% of us, this will be the last one you will ever need.Highly recommended.4 stars for the lack of LP connection. Otherwise.... 5 all the way.
