4Sony 3D system works great
By egdeleon
There are a lot of bells and whistles on this 3D system. I attached my system to a Toshiba 46WX800 since I knew the internal speakers on an LED system would not give me the theater feel that I wanted. I have had the system for 2 weeks and love it. The system talks to my TV and knows when to turn on the TV when I place in a DVD and keeps the speaker and TV settings for "movie" that you manually set. I used the built-in Netflix everyday and did not see a lag in it. That is done via wireless dongle that comes with the unit. I have not compared the 3D to other 3D DVD units so I don't really know if the 3D is the best. But I will buy one and compare. I do see in 3D with the Toshiba TV attached! The setup of the unit is unique where it has a microphone listening to the speakers and adjusts the unit according to the room in which you have set it up. You do have to update the system when you get it. It is best to update using a WIRED LAN instead of the wireless.By the way, the tags on this are wrong this is NOT a wireless speaker system out of the box. It is a 5.1 surround with ability to go to a 7.1 with sony wireless SRS speakers that are extra cost. This unit is a little less than $300 in both Costco and Samsclub as of Jan 4, 2011. Too bad AMAZON doesn't sell it themselves.

4Pricing??
By Jim G
CostCo sells this unit for $450I just bought one and so far I'm happy with it. Lots of cool features, crystal clear Blue-ray picture, good sound, plays Pods with usb connection, comes with wireless connection to stream NetFlix, FM radio, etc.Could be a 5 star for the money but too early to tell for me because I'm still learning what it can do.

4So far so good!
By Brian B
First, the speaker wires are NOT proprietary, despite what DARTH says in his review. The plugs that go into the back of the head unit are proprietary - but that's no surprise - my previous home theater system (a Philips) was the same way. All you need is a pair of wire cutters and you can strip the ends and twist your existing wires together with the new wires, then tape them with a little electrical tape. The sound will not suffer in any way. It does gripe me a little that they make the plugs proprietary, but it's by no means a show stopper. In addition, DARTH knocked the system because it wasn't totally wireless (I assume he meant speakers too) - but if he read the reviews and the box before he bought, he would have known that. The sound is great, and I still haven't calibrated the speakers or really spent alot of time on the system. The wireless for streaming should be a great feature.I do wish there was an additional USB port on the back, but that's minor. The additional features that come with this system make it worth the $300 I spent at Costco. Wireless streaming devices can cost $100+ just on their own.

5Lives up to the great reviews
By schuds
In my opinion, good quality 2-channel sound is the best option if you enjoy music. I sought to put together an entry-level "audiophile" 2.1 system. My source is an iMac running lossless files through a NuForce uDAC2. I've owned and enjoyed the sound of a variety of UK manufactured/designed speakers in the past. The Brits are still fond of 2-channel... they've been smart enough not to bite on the hype and expense of surround. Because of this, I used a number of UK audio review sites to wade through the available 2-channel integrated amps and bookshelf-sized speakers. I took my chances and, based on WhatHiFi's calling it the best amp under $800, I purchased the Yamaha A-S500 to pair with my Monitor Audio BR2 speakers and Jamo sub. I was impressed the first time I listened three weeks ago and am still impressed every evening when I sit down to listen. I listen to jazz and wide range of artists from Union Station to Wilco to Radiohead. The sound exceeds any I've dreamed of. It is strikingly clear and natural. I've never touched the bass/treble controls; no need to; flat sounds spectacular. Bass is natural. When listening to the Keith Jarrett Trio, Jack DeJohnette's cymbals are replicated to perfection. I don't agree with some other reviews that are concerned about the A-S500 build quality. I think the build quality is very good with the slight exception of the "plasticy" control knobs. I can live with the knobs, they aren't a deal breaker. I can't recommend the Yamaha A-S500 enough. It has changed how I listen to my music collection.

4Good performer but knobs make it look/feel cheap
By Karen Tolleshaug
Let me first say, I like the simple, retro, understated look of the A-S500. Photos on the web make it look solid, sturdy, well made, etc.I did read reviews re: plastic knobs. So upon opening the box the first thing I checked were the knobs. I can't fault their movement characteristics (the way volume knob rotates or selector knobs click) but the plastic material used for the knobs makes the unit both appear and especially feel cheap. This is not the type of plastic that comes pretty close to simulating metal (like my Harman Kardon A/V receiver), these knobs don't even try to pretend to be anything but plastic.A few other 'design' features disappoint as well. The power button is a small square; hard to see, and feels cheap. And, the sound that occurs when the A-S500 is turned on (that typical internal click sound that occurs 2-3 seconds after pressing power button)is very loud and "clunky" sounding. Also, LED lights on face are tiny, too tiny IMO. Very little effort spent designing remote either. Now the good. Enabling the Pure Direct feature (bypasses tonal and loudness controls; prevents amp from altering audio signal) yields the best quality output. With Pure Direct enabled, there is a noticeable increase in sound stage, roundness to the sound and more clarity. If like me, your music source is your computer's media player that includes a volume control and EQ for adjusting tone, you'll want to enable Pure Direct and ignore the front dials. With my speakers, I did not find the sound to be on the bright side as others mentioned. Not at all. Compared to my Harman Kardon receiver, the A-S500 cleaned up and brought out more lows and lower mid-range. That's where I saw the biggest difference - resulting in a fuller sound :-).In my opinion, the A-S500 is lacking in fit and finish, even for its low price, but shines in sound quality, especially with Pure Direct enabled.

5Super Amp
By James W. Galbraith
I read the review of the Yamaha A-S500 amplifier in Gramophone magazine. He said that the reader shouldn't be fooled by the comparatively low price of the machine. In fact, he said that it performed well beyond many more expensive amps. I purchased it and it performs wonderfully well. At 85 watts a channel continuous it will drive almost anything you have for a speaker system. It's controls, although unspectacular in appearance more than do the job. I have it set on the direct cd setting and it makes you think concert hall. If you get something more expensive don't expect it outperform this amp. 5 stars all the way. It has a dock for apple products. Go for it.At $399.95 you can't go wrong.

5Great headphones in their class
By J. Lee
This review is from a gamer's perspective, so if you are an audiophile, you may want to look elsewhere. I have a PS3 hooked up to some Logitech X540 speakers and wanted some headphones that could give me the same type of performance. I had a pair or Turtle Beach DPX21, but returned them because I did not like the soundstage of the headphones. They had good bass but the directional quality did not impress me.These Vizio XVTHP200 retail for over $300. To some, that may be expensive, but they are on par with other wireless headsets from other makers such as Sennheiser, Turtle Beach, or Astro Gaming.Out of the box you get the headphones, the wireless dock/stand, power adapter for the dock, travel charger for the headphones, 3 iPod/iPhone trays, 3.5mm audio cable, RCA cables Optical/Toslink cable and a carrying case. The wireless dock charges the headset via contacts on the top. The front of the wireless dock will display the input: iPod/SPDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format)/AUX SRS Fuction: SRS TruVolume/SRS TruSurround and Dolby Digital Light. The back of the wireless dock has RCA Audio in, SPDIF in, RCA Audio Out, DC in, HUB/CLIENT switch, Pair button, and Power button. The top of the dock has your iPhone dock and an INPUT button. The headphone's left ear cup has buttons for: volume up, power, volume down, Active Noise Reduction, and SRS.The headphone's right cup has buttons for: Next track, play/pause, Previous track, a charging port, input and an input button. It also has a 3.5mm input jack for on the cup for hooking up an mp3 player directly when you travel.Tech specs are: Speakers: 40mm Neodymium DriversSensitivity 96±3 dB 1mW at 1.5mmDistortion: 1KHz < 10%Impedance: 32 Ohm ± 20% at 1KHzSPL: 110 dB SPL per 1mWBattery Power: Battery - 940mAHVoltage: Adapter - 100V~240VSo how do they sound? Fantastic. With the iPod or my iPhone plugged into the dock, music was crisp with great non-distorting bass. As for games, I tried COD MW2, COD Black Ops, and Split Second. At first I had the optical cable going straight out from my Samsung monitor and had the PS3 set the sound to use the HDMI cable. Sound was good but the PS3 then can't do Dolby Digital. I then routed the optical cable from the PS3 to the wireless dock and then the Dolby Digital status light came on. You soundstage was definitely better with the PS3 games with crisper highs. The unit has two SRS settings. SRS Truvolume is suppose to eliminate volume spikes. For me, it gave me a more louder more expanded sound. SRS TruSurround expands the sound even further. The Active Noise Reduction button should be used only if you want to block out certain sounds such as a jet engine or vacuum cleaner. Additionally, I noticed absolutely no white noise when nothing as playing. I also testing routing the sound from the speakers to the heading using a 3.5mm jack to RCAs and only got a slight noise when the volume level was higher than 70% from the Logitech's control knob. Keeping it at 50% fixed the issue.Drawbacks? The headsets are heavier than the Turtle Beaches and will probably be heavier than all the other brands you test but for me it is not an issue. The earcups adjust left to right and tilt and are very soft. They also fold up for traveling. The other issue is that the side of the headphone band are made of rubber so it was a bad dust magnet. The headphones took about 2 hours to fully charge. If you place them on the dock, then will always charge, even if the dock is powered off and then the headphones will power off once they are charged. You should probably only charge them only you get a low battery notice for best performance. So far I am very pleased with the headphones due to the fact it can stream audio from my PS3, my laptop or from my iPhone and charges my iPhone. The sound has great bass and very good separation even though it is a single driver unit. Build quality is good and being wireless is a great option compared to the wired units. If you are looking for a good wireless headset, I recommend you consider the Vizio unit.UPDATE: Some games like GT5 do not work under optical out. Initially I thought that the headphones had gone out, but you have to change the PS3 sound settings back to HDMI and not Optical Out. So if you are not getting sound from the gaming console, check your sound settings in the console or even in the game itself.UPDATE 2: So after two weeks of further testing, I returned the headphones. The main reason for me was personal in that they were too heavy and the leather padding was too hot for my head. I still think these are great headphones but just not for me. I went back to the Turtle Beach DPX21s and after adjusting the sound settings, I have happy with the TBs but don't like the fact that they are not self powered so you have to keep swapping out the USB plug from device to device for the TBs to power on.

5Terrific purchase
By Fourth Quark
After researching wireless headphones for over 8 months, I bought this pair, and I couldn't be happier! The sound is crystal-clear (no humming, cutting, popping or cracking whatsoever), it supports Dolby Digital, protects your ears from jarring highs, automatically amplifies the lows, plays music from your iPod and iPhone, simulates surround sound, cancels outside noise (if you wish), works without its transmitter on an airplane (with airline entertainment system as well as for noise cancellation), and runs for 5+ hours nonstop in my experience. Wow.Oh, and it also has an RCA stereo-out, allowing you to connect other headphones or audio equipment that you might have.I have used this pair up to 40 feet away from the transmitter (with intervening walls), without a drop in sound quality. The fit is quite tight (probably to make the optional noise cancellation more effective), and it will not fit very large heads, but I got used to both these things within a few days. Plus, as another user has said, the ends of the headband are clad in some premium-grade rubber-like material that seems to attract dust. For me it's no big deal, because the dust (even if it is there) doesn't show.In fact, there was not *one* point on which I found a better pair of headphones. Sony, Sennheiser, Turtle Beach.... this one blows them all away. As an example, here's a head-to-head against Sennheiser's most expensive product:Vizio vs. Sennheiser RS 180------------------------------------* Vizio - $150; RS 180 - $330* Vizio - digital surround input (SPDIF, actually) *and* analog stereo input; RS 180 - analog stereo inputs only, no digital* Vizio - digital wireless transmission; RS 180 - the same* Vizio - iPod/iPhone dock; RS 180 - dock? what dock? you must be joking* Vizio - noise cancellation option (turn it on by pressing a button); RS 180 - no noise cancellation* Vizio - Dolby Digital; RS 180 - no DD* Vizio - SRS TruVolume (levels the volume so I can hear each dialog, no matter how softly it is spoken); RS 180 - a similar technology called Automatic Level Control* Vizio - SRS TruSurround; RS 180 - no surround* Vizio - has a 3.5mm stereo jack on one side so you can use it as a regular wired headphone on a plane; RS 180 - can only be used with its transmitter* Vizio - charges on the dock as well as from a USB port; RS 180 - can charge on its transmitter dock only

4Great with two exceptions
By JerseyGirl 166
These headphones are a godsend! I live in an apartment complex where there is very little, if any, soundproofing in between units which causes me to have constant feuds with my neighbor. I bought some very cheap wireless headphones before these but those did not cancel the residual noises I was hearing from my neighbor's surround sound system. So, after much research, I came across these Vizio headphones and decided to give them a try. I have to say, once they are on your head, you hear nothing but the sounds coming from your electronic devices. The surround sound in the headphones are great as well. Whenever I'm watching sports or a movie, I feel like I'm watching them in a theater. It has definitely helped me from going "ape" on my neighbor and maintaining the last bit of sanity I have. The only downfalls to these headphones are that every now and then, there is a funky gurgling noise that interrupts the sound. I believe it has to do with the wireless connection but it goes away rather quickly (lasts about 30 seconds). This happens even when I'm sitting still in my recliner and the transmitter is some 5 feet away. Last, the headphones do fit very tight and are a bit heavy. I don't recommend wearing them when you are doing things around the house/room, like cleaning or making food, because you will get tired of them being on your head. I only wear mine when I'm watching television positioned on the couch or in my recliner while relaxing. They are fine. The ipod feature I never use because if I wanted to listen to my ipod, I'd just wear my normal headphones and walk around my apartment with it in my hand.Overall, I would definitely recommend these if you share walls with anyone and you want to enjoy your electronic devices peacefully.

5Audioengine P4 Bamboo
By Miguel Fernandez Jr.
In a word "AMAZING". First of all these speakers are very full sounding and can handle VERY loud volumes with no discernible distortion. They have a small footprint but the sound presence produced by these wonders is truly something to behold. If you get a chance please try out these speakers and you won't regret it.I bought them based on a review I read in a computer magazine (maximum pc) and I have trusted their reviews for over 10 years. If you don't have a lot of space and need the highest quality sound from a small but large sounding package then these are ones to get. I can listen to these all day long, that's how good they are.Prior to this system I had Klipcsh pro media 5.1's and at the time they were the best speakers on the market for a computer gaming system. I would like to say that the Audioengines are a MUCH more listenable system. I don't even care that they aren't a 5.1 system because the sound stage they create is so lifelike. When I watch a blu-ray movie on my pc with these babies it sounds fantastic. Listening to music on these is also a great experience. Please try them. You will not be disappointed.I would also suggest you consider their AS8 sub-woofer too. It makes a big difference in the amount of bass. Audioengine makes very high quality products and takes great care to protect them during shipping as they are packaged in double cartons and microfiber material to protect the finish.

5The little Audioengines that could!
By Budajoe69
So I picked up these little Audioengine P4, in bamboo...here's my impressions...First, a quick description of the music system I'm using these in as a point of reference -- power is coming from a Peachtree Audio Decco2, running lossless files from a new iMac -- speakers are these P4s in a small, office based computer set-up. Speakers are placed a couple inches off each end of the the imac.I stumbled upon these little bookshlef speakers from Amazon reviews...most reviewers sung them such high praise, I decided to take a chance on them, seeing that I had 30 days from Amazon to return them if I was disappointed -- prior to discovering them, I was strongly considering gettig some B & W 685s or something to that extent.First, the build quality as others have noted, is exceptionally nice -- perfectly finsihed, these speakers are not light weight junk plastic, but housed in solid bamboo which feel and look to be handsome, quality product. The silk tweeter and 4" kevlar woofer are well engineered -- no imperfections or defects to comment on. The rear cable inputs are also done well with also no imperfections or faulty pieces.Ultimately, you can have a speaker that appears fantastic on the outside, but when you hear the music, the romance suddenly stops -- not so with these; they sound as beautiful as they look -- truely impressive!I have a pair of floorstanding B&W CMs, and with the exception of obviously producing larger, more bassier sound, these little guys with the combo I described earlier do just as well, if not in some aspects better. They have a tremendous soundstage for being so small, and can easily fill a smaller room full of music. As with other good speakers, these tend to disappear and you find yourself engulfed in sweet sound without a specific reference point of where the speaker is placed or where the music is coming from -- a sign of a quality speaker -- your awareness is overtaken by the fullness of sound these produce. They speakers maintain their clarity at all but the highest of volumes. If anything, the space in which I've placed them is a bit tight, and they would probably benefit from being spaced further apart to expand the soundstage. The mids these produce are very nice and lush...singers' voices sound fantastic and up front, and highs are high, but not shrill or harsh. Instrument separation & placement are also all fantasic -- on good recordings with multiple layers of instruments, these can reproduce a stunning amount of clarity, precision & detail. Again, I was very impressed -- maybe it's the amp their coupled with (the Decco2 which is just super as well), but altogether, I don't think you'll find a better passive speaker for right around 3 bills...if you do, please let me know!If B & W would place their logo on these, these could go for as much as their CM line bookshelf speakers which run close to $1k.Highly recommend!!! In my opinion, easily one of the best sounding bookshelfs (in this size) in this price range, and can easily compete with more expensive speakers which cost 3 to 4 times as much. 4Little problem at first
By R. Macias
I purchased this product new. It came delivered just as promissed. I went to hook it up using the HDMI cables, but no sound came out. I know my DVD player and LCD TV is HDMI compatible, because when I hook it up direct, no problem. I tried a new HDMI cable, re-set the device, and still the problem exist. I contacted Philips about the problem and explained everything I did. They sent me out a replacement unit, and it works GREAT. I don't mind if there's a problem with a product that I buy, but I expect the company to make it right. The soundbar is great for my bedroom. The price was right, and dealing with Philips customer service was great. I recommend this soundbar to anyone who wants to upgrade from there wimmpy built in speakers on there TV.

3Liked it, but returned it
By Greg
I was looking for a small soundbar and subwoofer to replace a 5.1 surround system when we remodeled and got rid of the big armoire that held all my audio gear. I looked at several brands and models, but many bars got poor reviews. Additionally, many soundbar/subwoofer systems include a very large subwoofer that wouldn't fit where I needed it. When I spotted this system (Philips HSB2312A) at a discount membership club for $150, I took it home and hooked it up to my Vizio LCD using an optical audio cable. Connected to the TV, I have a Motorola HD set top box (HDMI), a Sony Blu-ray player (HDMI), and a Wii game system (standard AV cable). I also connected my MP3 player through the AV input on the soundbar, which was a nice bonus. It sounded great and seemed to be just what I was looking for, but after we used it (lightly) for about two months I decided to return it for two reasons:(1) The sound would drop out when watching Blu-ray movies. I'm not sure why this happened, but I watched three or four different movies and this happened several times during each movie. The only remedy I could find was to change the input on the soundbar from optical to another input, and then back to optical. I never experienced this when playing my MP3 player through the AV input, playing the Wii, or watching cable TV. It only occurred when watching Blu-ray movies.(2) The main reason I returned it is because the soundbar itself would get extremely hot to the touch and had a "burning electronics" smell. It wasn't enough to be alarming, but I noticed every time I used it. At first, I assumed this was just because it was new and thought it would fade over time. However, it smelled the same way after two months any time the power was turned on. I decided that I didn't want to take a chance on it burning up or malfunctioning in the future.LIKES: small size, great sound, MP3 input, great priceDISLIKES: hot to touch/burning smell, instructions were not very helpful, didn't like having another remote

3Decent but needs improvement
By Transformer_fan
I just finished hooking up my PS3 and cable box to this soundbar/woofer combo via the 2 HDMI inputs in the backEverything works well, sound quality is decent and its really easy to set upBut come tomorrow I'm sending it back ... WHY ?Simple ! the device loses the video signal as soon as I change the channel from HD to SD on my cable box and/or vice-versa. Only workaround is to cycle through the inputs before it picks up the picture again. If you like to flip channels between SD and HD as most do, this system is not going to work for youOh and why is it so that the device turns off when the signal is cut but doesn't turn back on when it comes back ? Shouldn't this 'green eco stuff' work both ways ? Why must I turn it on manually every time I turn the cable box/ps3 and TV on ? I don't think this merits buying one of those macro-programmable remotes anyway

4Impressed and I'm hard to impress
By Timothy W. Long
I put this up against my Polk CS20 figuring it would be a light weight. I ran it as the main center for a week. The side speakers on my system are wall mounted Polks and the sides are a pair of old Energies. I figured that even if the speakers weren't voice matched, it would still be fun to give these a shot. I didn't expect much but much to my surprise, this has become my main center now.By rights these speakers shouldn't sound as good as they do. I have large speakers on the side and I like having the larger speakers in the centers to compensate. The JBL has smaller 4" speakers and an odd tweeter that is set at one side of the speaker instead of in the center. It has a pair of bars over it which must enhance the sound somehow. This speaker is heavy and I think that is what leads to such terrific sound. The voice timbre that comes out of this speaker is deep and rich. In comparison, the Polk sounds smaller and has much more mid and less bass. Even the family noticed the difference and commented that the JBL sounded better. The only thing I don't care for and I know this is just a personal nit pick. The design is odd. It has a larger speaker grill on the right and they are a pain to get off. If you look at the picture they do have sort of a futuristic look. I would have preferred a cleaner look with smooth lines. Still, the design does not take away from the speaker at all. When it comes to sound I am hard to impress. I'm no audiophile but I do know a good pair of speakers when I hear them. My old floor speakers were Monitor Audio's so I have no qualms about dropping the money on decent sound. I would recommend the JBL 120c any day of the week.Edit August 2012 - I am still using this speaker and I still think it's great. If anything, the sound has gotten fuller and smoother as the speaker was broken in. My entire system is Polk except for this center and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

5A Pleasant Surprise
By TMStyles
First, I readily admit that I am NOT an audiophile nor a sound "techie" so I will not relist the technical aspects of this JBL speaker that are contained in the above specs; therefore, I can only say that I like how it looks and how it sounds. I acquired this center channel speaker and added it to my 7.1 home multichannel surround system that contains different brand name speakers and a Sony receiver and Sony Blu-Ray--so nothing is matched by brand sequencing. This being said, the JBL Studio 120c has been a welcome addition and a surprise for its efficacy matched by its price, something I consider a real value. The unit is very rigid and sturdy at 18.6 pounds and clearly is solidly built. I find the distinctive JBL black weave design to be an intriguing addition to my system as it sits beneath my HD plasma TV and adds a classy decorative look to the whole setup. Obviously, it is magnetically shielded since it is so close to my video units. In addition to its front facing speakers, it sports a rear facing bass port that seems to add to the effectiveness of the center channel sound that I did not experience with my former center speaker. I am very pleased with the quality and richness of the sound from any spot in the large room where my system sits. Center channel sound, whether from sporting events on HD televison or engrossing Blu-Ray movies is clear, rich, realistic, and at times, attention grabbing. This non-techie highly recommends this center channel loud speaker.

5Crisp and clear, a terrific performer
By crouchingtiger
I purchased the JBL Studio 120c center channel and 130 bookshelf speakers to replace some admittedly lower-grade equipment (an older Cambridge Soundworks center channel and some good value but cheap Jensen speakers). I am using the 130s as the front-mains, as I have my home theater setup in a small room where bigger speakers would be overkill, and I am using a terrific Polk subwoofer to round out the lower frequencies.I have spent the last couple weeks watching a variety of movies and TV shows on the new setup and I have been incredibly happy with both JBL additions. The 120c puts out crisp and clear dialogue with a resonant voice timbre. The overall sound fidelity of the three speakers together is amazing. All the fine details of the Planet Earth Blu-Rays came through crystal clear (rustling leaves, crashing waves, etc.), and I was equally impressed with the quality of the music reproduction in movies with both orchestral and rock soundtracks. I was actually a little bit surprised and very pleased at the very obvious increase in sound quality over my previous speakers in that they themselves were a huge upgrade over the built-in speakers on my TV.The build on the speakers is top-notch. In fact, after receiving the 120c, I had no hesitation putting my 40" LCD TV (~45 lbs) directly on top of the speaker as that is the layout that is most convenient for me. I also find the styling to be very attractive in person, a point which I was nervous about while looking at the pictures. The speakers are distinctive while still remaining inobtrusive -- the matte finish on the plastic portions of the speaker grille was a great choice in this regard. In conclusion, I am extremely pleased with the quality of these speakers and would recommend them without hesitation. The price was also beyond reasonable. I will admit I have never owned "high-end" speakers costing many hundreds or thousands of dollars, but my checking account and I are relieved that with these JBL speakers I will not be tempted to go down that road for years to come.
