Product Description

The Altec Lansing inAir 5000 Wireless AirPlay Speaker is a sleek, attractive wireless speaker built specifically for use with Apple iTunes on iPads, iPhones, iPods, or computers running iTunes 10.2 or later. The inAir 5000 Wireless AirPlay Speaker features a carefully crafted cabinet which features a perpendicular design and rounded edges to eliminate artifacts associated with boxed speaker designs.

Inside the stylish cabinet lies a tri-amplified speaker system rated at 110 watts (peak). A 3" mid-range speaker, 4" subwoofer and 1" tweeter, combined with active digital signal processing (DSP) result in pristine audio fidelity at home or in your office. Its active DSP controls high frequencies and bass response in order to maintain a uniform, tonal quality throughout the entire range.

Setup is straightforward and fast. The inAir 5000 uses Apple AirPlay to access playlists and files on iTunes. Minimal setup is required for your iOS device or computer, and multiple inAir 5000 Wireless AirPlay Speakers may be networked for a full sound experience in large spaces or multiple rooms. Additional features include a USB input for charging and wired playback, 1/8" (3.5mm) mini headphone jack, auxiliary audio input jack and Ethernet network connection.

AirPlay Convenience
Wirelessly stream music over Wi-Fi from any iOS device or computer running iTunes.

Premium Sound
Unique, non-parallel walls deliver clarity and minimal loss through the entire tonal range. Adaptive DSP widens the sound field, tames high frequencies and offers lower bass-response.

Distinct Ease-of-Use
The inAir Guide iOS app walks users through a quick set-up that will have your music playing in minutes.

Elegant Design
The contemporary, minimalist design with premium materials, accents and finish is striking and attractive.

4Great AirPlay speaker
By JKX0
I was looking for a fairly portable, high quality wireless speaker for my room when I came across this product. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on the Bose SoundLink, which is a bluetooth speaker with excellent sound quality (according to reviews, anyway), but I realized the inAir5000 was the same price (around $300)! AirPlay, in my opinion, is superior to bluetooth for wireless streaming, since there is no signal compression when sound is transferred to the destination device, and honestly, it's also much easier to use. Of course, if you don't own any Apple products, this point is moot. I, though, own a fair number of them, and this looked like the perfect product, especially since most AirPlay speakers are fairly expensive; the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air, for example, is priced around 600. (By the way, you CAN turn this into a bluetooth speaker by purchasing one of many bluetooth adapters and connecting the adapter to the inAir 5000 via the aux jack.)So, I purchased it from Amazon, received it within 2 days (thanks, Prime!), and, so far, I couldn't be happier. The inAir 500 looks elegant and sounds amazing (it's very LOUD, surprisingly... in a good way). I am no audiophile, admittedly, but this product has surpassed my expectations: setup was painless (connect the speaker to a power outlet, turn it on, connect your iDevice, download an app, and walk though the instructions to connect to a WiFi network) and I was listening to my entire collection is less than 5 minutes... wirelessly! I am a bass fiend, and I am glad to report that bass sounds fantastic, and overall sound quality is superb. I can send music to the inAir 5000 from my iPad, iPhone, iMac, and even my Windows laptop (via AirFoil - which, by the way, is an amazing product: try it!). The only negatives I have come across so far are that the sound gets distorted at higher volumes (>80-90%), and, for some strange reason, the default volume level is automatically set to 100% when the signal source is anything other than an iDevice (this, however, is easily controlled).Pros- Looks and feels like a well put together, high quality product- Easy setup- Sounds amazing- Slick remote (although you'll probably never use it)- Reasonably pricedCons- Not super portable (this is not something you just disconnect and take with you to a party, but I wasn't looking for that)- Sound distortion at high volume (I rarely ever go over 50%, so this is not a big deal to me. Anyway, if you have the volume turned all the way up, it wouldn't matter, since you'd go deaf.)- Volume defaults to the highest level when streaming via laptop (or any non-iDevice); this is easy to control via AirFoil, or whatever mechanism you're sending the signal throughAll in all, this is a great buy, in my opinion: highly recommended!

3Very cool, but not quite ready for prime time
By Jonathan Locke
Setup was a breeze. No problems there. The unit also sounds very nice. But after playing a few songs I tried to adjust the volume while a song was playing. Doing any adjustment to a playing song with AirPlay causes a lot of UI lag (things happen a while after you ask for them to happen). This is fairly annoying but workable. Unfortunately, adjusting the volume while a song was playing subsequently caused the InAir 5000 to start skipping sections of the song randomly and frequently. The skipping didn't actually stop until I reset the speaker by turning the power off and on. Although I've only seen the problem the one time, it would appear to be a great big bug in their firmware. As a software engineer, I expect a lot more from firmware programmers than this. Firmware for consumer devices needs to be bullet proof, not "kinda working".

5Amazing item
By Spencer
Love this speaker system. It came very well packed in a good strong box. Very simple to set up. The sound quality is amazing and best of all was the price. I saw this online on other sites for double the price so definitely a good deal. Volume adjustment works just fine. I use this with my iPad. The elegant design goes really well on my desk.Overall, excellent purchase, great item, great price.

5High performance for a great price! Denon AVR 988
By Rob Williams
This was a strong performing receiver at $1200. Now it is an amazing value. Why?Pros1) Clean high current power- in the end, the most important thing. Strip away all the bells and whistles and "features" and listen to it. Many receivers brag about 100 watts of power and yet sound thin. Denon is known for amplifier quality. This Denon receiver was designed for the $1200 instead of the $500 price point and has the parts quality that reflects it (good power supply, shielding, and separate circuit boards for Digital, Analog Video and Analog Audio) The receiver has 110 watts for 7 channels and will drive your speakers for better bass and clarity.2) 1080P Upconversion- there is two types of upconversion. In other words, what are you doing to a VCR or other analog video signal to make it HDMI? Some receivers "Transcode", which means they convert from regular composite video, S-Video, or Component video to HDMI. This is done for convenience. You get all of your sources on one HDMI cable going into the TV, but don't expect any improvement in video quality. The other way of conversion is called upconversion or "scaling." Now you are taking a 480i signal and converting it to 1080i or 1080P. The quality of that process varies widely. Some upconverters make the image look horrible. Some only upconvert to 1080i. Denon uses a Faroudja FLi2310 video processor that provides video scaling up to 1080p resolution. On other words, it makes your old stuff look good. Not as good as true HD source material, but it is a significant improvement.3) Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio- decodes them both.4) Multi-Zone/Multi-Source: Use 5 of the channels for home theater and the 2 other channels to power a second zone (like speakers for an outdoor deck) with a different source. So you can watch movies in the family room and still have a CD playing outside. The second zone can be fed from the coax digital or optical digital input (rather than only analog), something that many other multi-source receivers can't do.5) Auto Setup: Many people buy a receiver and never bother to set it up to compensate for their room and speakers. I prefer to set up a receiver manually for inputs, speaker size and distance and it can make a huge difference in sound quality. Denon makes setup easy. Once you plug in the microphone, the receiver automatically detects and enters in auto-setup mode. The Audyssey Multi EQ XT can be setup for 8 favorite listening setups...you can calibrate it for a couple watching movies vs a group watching a football game. There is a large difference among auto EQs, and Audyssey does a good job.6) Auto Lipsync- Have you noticed the image not match up with the sound? Rather than put up with that movie experience, the Denon receiver will allow you to correct for the delays between the video and audio processing.7) Shh...don't tell anyone, but this receiver is very, very close in performance to Denon's AVR 2808. Just less expensive!8) Yes, it even still has a phono input.9) Music restorer- Playing an iPod? Use this to make compressed audio sources sound less worse.DrawbackAlthough it will convert other inputs to HDMI, it only has two HDMI inputs. For those who want more HDMI inputs, add a HDMI switcher box. One of the best reviewed ones is the Oppo. It works with Tivo, Comcast cable boxes, and with Denon receivers.OPPO HM-31 Certified HDMI 1.3 and 1080p Switch

4Verry affordable, great receiver for the money!
By ManiS
Excellent music and video capabilities including the latest HD formats, and 1080p conversion is real (works well).Denon is known for faithful reproduction of music and usually the cornerstone of low end /budget audiophile systems. I tried these with Martin Logan Aeon i Speakers and they sound fine (considering Martin Logans require amps to drive large currents at 2 to 4 ohms, but still not enough - while the sound quality is fine - no additional noises/artifacts, the volume tends to be low with martin logans); so I am forced to use other (Polk) speakers with these too for the most part (in 5 channel mode instead of stereo for classical music) in most situations (that and the bad docs/remote/gui setup is why I am giving 4 stars!)Pros: 1. analog conversion all the way to HDMI 1080p2. downward conversion to svhs/analog for multizones3. Excellent connectivity to networked music (ASD-1r/3w/3n docs - optional) and ipods4. easy setup for room5. Preamp output availableCons:1. Still bad/complicated remote! (and bad documentation too).2. Only 2 HDMI inputs?Didn't test on screen menu feature on this yet (one year old Denon 588 didn't have that)Overall it is a good product especially compared to the similar 2808 that sells for $1000 upwards. Both are similar featured (except that 2808 supports 3 zone/3 source compared to 2 zone/2 source for 988 model; and 2808 also has a simple second remote that is good; the rest of the amp is exactly the same as 988, just costs more!).Considering the price and features, this model is a steal right now!Update/Caveat: If your speakers are 6 ohms or higher, then this receiver is great! So decide carefully taking all the components in to consideration. For my case, I am adding a good stereo amp (Class D) to drive the martin logans using the pre out for zone 2 as the input for the stereo amp.UPDATE: Looks like Denon has introduced new models AVR-989 and 2809Cl with just 2 differences (115W instead of 110W per ch. and 4 HDMI inputs - they listened to the reviewers/users and increased the number of HDMI inputs)! That's the reason that these are getting discounted right now; if you don't care about more than 2 HDMI inputs, this is the best sale ever.I have used Marantz, harmon kardon and sony in the past (never used Onkyo but reading reviews I stayed away from it because of power/burn out issues) and all of them have had troubles with power - usually gets heated a lot more than denons, sometimes protection circuit kicks in and turns off those receivers in my setup (goes to power efficiency of Denons, that they are able to give better wattage without wasting extra power).

5Denon has it all
By T. Strane
This receiver is fully customizable to my media room. This thing lets you assign the HDMI inputs to your devices and Label them on the display. (I also setup the XBox and labeled the HDP2 inputs XBox 360. Just don't forget to select, in the setup, analog sound.) Plus this Denon has a mic that you plug in the front to set up your speakers. It will decode most sound codecs and transmit them to your speakers with class. The video, analog to digital 1080p, scaling works great. If you are smart enough to hook up the wires in the back, you are smart enough to customize the setup features. :) I love it.

5Excellent Receiver at this price range
By KD
I previously bought a 1120k receiver and returned it for this one. Please see my companion 1120k review and the LSI15 review (right speaker even though I bought both) if you're curious.I used this amplifier to drive 4 ohms speakers. Most audiophiles will tell you to get external amplification to drive them. I am usually skeptical of these claims.Myth: You will need external amplifiers to drive 4 ohm speakers. False. I pushed these with an Onkyo 808 135 watts at 8ohms, not sure about the 4 ohms spec as Onkyo doesn't advertise it. There was absolutely no clipping at ear blistering level. No harshness whatsoever from the LSI15 that I heard from the C-5. At high volume, the Energy C-5 gave me a headache. However, the LSI were still extremely smooth. Those speakers (LSI15) are 89db efficiency at 1 watt, so if I push it to 110db, it would require only 128 watts to push. 110db is far louder than comfortable for most living rooms. I guess if you like listen to it louder, then external amplification would be needed. Most normal people wouldn't. Tip: Don't set the receiver to 4 ohm mode. Leave it at 8 ohms. The 4 ohm mode only serve to cut the power output to protect the receiver. My receiver has two fans that I never noticed turning on. Onkyo got smart by inserting fans. Previously, they were hot enough to cook eggs. Would external amplification improve sound quality? I have my doubts. I am a firm believer in amplifiers used for extreme volume only. Normal listening level does not require an amplifier to improve quality (relative to this receiver, lesser receiver may have issues). However, if anyone has an amplifier and wants to prove me wrong, I'm ready to be a believer. The Onkyo 808 is a huge beast with a very hefty heat sink with dual fans. It has every single high-end adjustable settings you can think of. The only thing I discovered is that the noise correction caused my Netflix stream to ghost. However, that may be due to the noise correction algorithm coupled with the 120hz mode on my TV. Turning off the noise correction fixed the ghosting for me. The quality of the up conversion is good but perhaps a little soft for SD. I do not have an A to B comparison with the Pioneer so I can't be sure which is better. If the Marvell is better, I didn't notice it. However, I would not suggest buying an audio receiver for the video processing chip. Most SD look bad regardless of up conversion, and most high def source look best at native resolution of your TV. I've been reading on the Internet that the Marvell chip is so much better than the Faroudja. There is definitely an improvement on up conversion for either chips, but you can't make SD look HD no matter how hard you try. At least for me, DVD's looked like crap (in comparison to HD) on both the Pioneer and the Onkyo receivers. Therefore, I chalk up conversion as tie for both = equally crappy. The HDMI is good. My PC picked up the receiver as an output source quickly.PROS:135 WattsDrive 4ohms speakers wellOSD for volumeExcellent Internet radio functionalityRegular cable for IPODDual fans to cool heat sinkPer input level gainPer speakers cross-overDual subwoofer outputTriggerFirmware upgradeable (make sure you update right away)CONS:Warmer than the PioneerUpdate 12/10/10: No dialogue enhancement No Iphone AppThis receiver is actually very good. I returned the Pioneer even though I got an extremely good deal for it. If you don't need the 135 watts, I recommend the 708 instead. However, at the current $70 online price difference between the 708 and 808, I would get the 808 for insurance. Who knows, you may want to buy 4ohm speakers later on =) and you'll save yourself the upgradeitis agony. The Pioneer 1120k is currently about $100 cheaper than the 708 street price. It's an excellent receiver if you only need 110 watts and no trigger. However, if you want Internet radio functionality, volume OSD, and per input volume gain, per speaker cross-over, pick the 708 or 808 instead.Update (11/15/10): After having used it a few weeks, I have not discovered anything wrong with it since I updated the firmware immediately when I received it. The firmware updated pretty easily over the Internet (make sure its in USB mode first or you'll get an error). The Internet radio is very cool and works flawlessly. You do not need conventional radio with this option since most radios networks have an Internet versions online. I found some online Internet radio with 256k quality as well as radios from around the world.I had to adjust my input to +6db to my UVerse box and +3 to my HTPC to make it the same level as the PS3 (which is always louder for some reason). I don't suggest anyone purchase any receiver that lack this feature. My old Denon had it and this one has it. I missed it immediately when I bought the Pioneer. The online display shows both volume level as well as the input label as well so I don't have to look at the receiver through the glass door which is a plus. I have not heard the fan come on yet so I believe the dual fans may be installed as a precaution rather than a necessity (then again, it's not Summer right now). All in all, I'm very happy with this receiver. I originally wanted a Denon 3111 as a replacement but Denon is not budging on MSRP right now which means it would have cost me almost twice as much as this one. There are currently no other receivers on the market that has the comparable features as this one at this price range.Update 12/10/10: Added the two Cons. I do miss the dialogue enhancement and the Iphone app was very cool on the Pioneer.

5Packed with features
By Sean T. Seely
I bought the ONKYO TX-NR808 to replace my aging 10 year old Lexicon DC-2 pre-amp and Carver Professional amps. The Onkyo powering Miller and Kreisel THX 750 5.1 speaker system.I figured that after 10 years I could use a audio update even though the Lexicon is still a amazing piece of equipment but I didn't want to spend $6500 this time around.I wanted a receiver that had all of the newer DTS and Dolby surround formats and could power the 4 ohm M&K speakers (8 vs 4 ohm setting in the setup menus). It sounds great I love the video switching and the great on screen display of settings.I have a Netgear 9150 Digital entertainer Elite hooked to it with only one HDMI cable. Being able to use the HDMI really cleans up the cabling since it can also send the audio over the same cable. Same thing goes for my HD cable box, HDMI no seperate audio cable needed.I haven't had any problems with the Ethernet not connecting, even though I did let it update via the internet. The streaming off connected networked computer is nice also, without any problems. Pandora works flawlessly. For the price and features it cannot be beat. Also Amazon has it for the lowest price.UPDATE: 07-02-11Still no problems. I now have a HTPC hooked up running WMC and Boxee.Awesome product for the money.

5Blown away by the sound quality and features! Amazon was $300 cheaper then crutchfield!
By Beau Boyd
So I purchased the TX-NR808 to replace my Onkyo TX-SR800 mainly just for the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA decoding, but man was I blown away by the overall sound quality improvement with standard DD, DTS, and stereo as well! I am a very expianced home theater installer, and I am ashamed to say that I didn't realize how much of a difference 35 watts per channel would make. I have a 7.1 speaker setup featuring Polk Audio RTi10 tower speakers and a Velodyne 10" powered sub, which have always sounded great, but let me tell you that these speakers have never sounded so amazing as they do now with this receiver! WOW! Any source that i've run through it(CD, DVD, iPod, or Blu-ray) has resulted in a sonic explosion! Highs, mids and lows all are perfectly represented by the 808. So.... the real question most people want to know the answer to is.... "Does Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD sound better then standard DD and DTS?" The answer is ABSOLUTELY YES! I watched Kung Fu Panda to compare the difference and it was immediately obvious that the Dolby TrueHD trumped the DD track in every way. Then I put in "Crank 2" to hear what a DTS-MA HD 7.1 mix could do. Let me say that once the DTS logo started I was left absolutely speechless until the credits ended! Sonic power and clarity is all I can say. With either format you get improved ambiance, harder hitting bass, and amazing dynamic range which creates an unequalled movie watching experiance! No movie theater can even come close the the sound quality I now have in my home theater!I will now list some of the other improvements that this receiver does that my old one didn't.1. I now have the volume displayed on my screen via the HDMI out on the receiver. Very handy since my components are in the room behind my theater room!2. I can connect it to my home network and play all my music from my computer instantly!3. The receiver programs the remote for you after you tell it what components you have. Awesome!4. It takes any video input whether it's composite, s-video, or component and sends it to your TV, upconverted to HD through the HDMI out!To summarize. . . with all the features that this receiver has for the low price that I paid through Amazon I couldn't be happier with the TX-NR808! This is bar none the best receiver that I have ever heard for under $1,500!

5Excellent sound, iPod support and easy set up

Right after the warranty expired on my Onkyo TX-SR606 the HDMI ports starting acting flaky. After some research I found that this receiver did have some issues with the HDMI processing board. Instead of sending it off for service, I decided to get a new AV receiver and started the process of narrowing my choices down. As you know since you're reading this, the task can be daunting to say the least. You can read dozens of favorable reviews on certain receivers and then read a few bad ones and you're off in search of the next "perfect" receiver. Also, at this point in the year we are just months away from the 2011 models so then you wonder what you're going to miss out on if you don't wait. I decided to not concentrate on every single specification but on what is most important for any av receiver: SOUND!!! Next I wanted iPod connectivity and finally reliability since my other receiver lasted a little over two years. The problem with choosing a receiver based on its sound quality is that this subjective and can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I listen to a lot of music and well as enjoying Blue Ray movies for their clarity and digital sound so I wanted a receiver that could handle both well. As I was researching the thing that kept cropping up about the Denon receivers was their excellent sound. I still use my 15 year old Denon receiver on the back porch and have always liked their products so Denon was definitely at the top of my list. I narrowed it down to the Pioneer VSX-1120-K and the Denon AVR-2311CI. The deciding factors in choosing the Denon were the reviews that kept saying how good this receiver processes both the digital video audio as well as music, the USB port for direct iPod connectivity and the 3 year warranty vs. the 1 year on the Pioneer (the Pioneer was a slight bit less expensive but by the time you purchased a 3 year warranty the prices were about the same.) I have had the Denon now for one week and I couldn't be more pleased! It worked flawlessly right out of the box and the Audyssey set up was accomplished without even cracking open the manual (one flaw of the receiver is the plastic cover that covers the front inputs for a digital video camera and the Audyssey mic. You press in on it expecting it to open like a hinged door. Instead it pops completely out). I have Mirage M490 bookshelves as my fronts and a Polk RM85 surround system (using 5.1 with no rear since almost no Blue Ray HD audio processes 7.1 channel), a Polk PSW110 powered subwoofer and a Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blueray. My TV is a Samsung LN52A630. The first Blueray disk I tested was The Lord of the RIngs The Fellowship of the Rings and I must say I was blown away!!!! My Onkyo sounded good but the overall sound quality of the Denon was unmistakable!! I was hearing things I had not heard before and the surround separation was superb. When I plugged in my iPod I was disappointed in the sound so I know I had some adjusting to do so I grabbed the manual. Some reviews of this receiver indicated that you had to be a true Audiophile to accomplish some of the more nuanced features of the receiver and this is true to an extent. If I had not had previous experience with my Onkyo some of the setting would have been difficult. The manual assumes a lot in my opinion but in many respects it is very thorough which is a good thing. Believe it or not, the most complicated task was getting the remote set up for it to control all my other components. The only component I couldn't get it to control was my PS3. Other than that, I now have only one remote (it easily set up to control my Disk Network DVR)!!! The remote could use some updating as the buttons are small and not intuitive in many cases (e.g. you press the "Standard" button to switch between the different Dolby Digital outputs). One plus on the remote are the three Quick Select buttons that you can easily set up to access your TV, Cable/Sat and Dock with the touch of a button. There are separate surround modes for video and music output which, when set up, makes the music come alive!! In the music mode, you can adjust the surround depth "forwards and backward" the sound coming from the center out towards the fronts left and right to give a more full sound for music. There are also treble and bass adjustments under "Tone". Once I got this set up the music from the iPod was exceptional!!!! The Graphical User Interface is very good and easy to use. When the iPod is attached, you can navigate all the menus on the iPod on TV screen using the remote. Other functions such as switching from surround video to music are easily accomplished. Video upscaling to 1080 is excellent as well. The display on the receiver gives you all the information you need.Overall I couldn't be any happier with this receiver and the sound it is producing and its overall look and performance. I highly recommend!

4Solid performer.
By R. Pandolfo
This is my third Denon receiver. I switched from a highly rated THX Ultra Certified JVC flagship receiver that was a more expensive unit to this one because I wanted HDMI. The sound for movies is very good. Denon is known for that smooth sound which is not high pitched. Music sounds great too but I have good speakers, front speakers are Boston Acoustics VR 960, which is really the key to good sound. I also have an OPPO DV-980H universal player for music and it is an excellent player for all audio sources. Automatic speaker set up was a bit of a problem with this receiver. I tried the Audyssey which is the automatic speaker set up device but it didn't work properly. It could be because my speakers have built in sub woofers. Anyway, I set up the speakers manually and it was easy if you've done this before and I'm very satisfied with the sound. I adjusted each speaker individually from the setup menu. I called Denon three times for some questions and got through right away, the customer service is excellent and they helped make the set up process quicker. The receiver has a 3 year warranty, which is rare for electronics. Overall I'd rate this very high for movies and surround sound, and a solid performer for music. It has 6 HDMI in and one HDMI out which really makes set up easy. I paid $600 at Best Buy purchased as an open box item. They said that people have returned some of these receivers because they had trouble setting it up and that may have been Audyssey problems. Set up outside of Audyssey was not difficult, considering the fact that all of these receivers have a certain degree of difficultly setting up. The key is that you can call Denon and they have very good customer service reps who are U.S. based, they do not outsource customer support. If you need a basic setup guide, the manual is confusing, just search on batpig Denon and this guy has a nice cheat sheet for easy Denon setup, good website.

5Denon AVR-2311CI is GREAT!!!
By Joe
From the initial Power-Up to now the receiver has worked flawlessly. It replaced a Denon AVR-3806 because it has 3D capabilities and many more HDMI inputs available. We recently got a Panasonic VT25 HDTV set which has these features so we needed a *newer* Receiver. I was going to order the Pioneer VSX-32 but saw too many problems (power-down probs) on the Oppo-93 Forum. One thing the Denon has (which works very well, I might add) is the HD radio tuner. We're in the Washington, D.C. area and can receive many of them. Very nice and at no extra cost. All-in-all, a very good purchase.

5These are the speakers to buy!
By Joe G
Let me start by saying I research everything extensively before I buy it, especially home audio. I initially thought I wanted bose acoustimass, but all the reviews were mixed. My biggest criteria was small speakers. I previously had tower Sonys and bose surround, but was ready for a more hidden look. I whittled the research down to mirage nanosats or these. I was skeptical spending $600+ without hearing them and went to the local best buy where I could listen to both. They both sound great, but the definitive sounded a bit fuller and I couldn't get used to the nanosats. Setup is a bit odd, but well worth the sound. Plenty of tight bass, but not too boomy and the mids and highs are clear and lifelike.

5Buy these speakers!!
By Concession Card
Fantastic sound, you won't be upset with this purchase!!Great sound, very attractive, nice solid weight to the speakers, definitly not cheap flimsy crap!! Easy to set up although they recommend your front speakers plug into the Sub and not straight from your receiver. Nice seperation of sound, very impressed. Would buy these all over again!!Get the floor stands, very solid and worth the $99 a pair. All speakers come with Bannana type plugs that plug in or you can unscrew and feed wire in. I found a great deal on Amazon for gold plugs by Dayton and made my own cables with 14 guage wire, much cleaner install than straight wire.

5So Here is the Deal with Def Tech Speakers...
By T. R. Kanavy
Firstly, these are excellent speakers. They are perfect for smaller to average-sized rooms. When paired with a quality receiver, these little fellows can astonish your friends and family that come over to watch movies and sporting events. I work in the home theater industry professionally, and I tend to use the Definitive line in many of my project's for a variety of reasons. Now, the only potential downside, is that Definitive Technology speakers scale REALLY well. Meaning when you splurge for the next package up (in this case the Pro 800/ Pro 1000) the benefits are easily realized. I often tell my customers "unless you hear the next level up side-by-side you will be thrilled with them". The sound in the smaller packages can get slightly anemic at higher frequency ranges if you're a picky audiophile. When you increase the speaker driver size (as you move up the speaker line) you will notice an increase in the the richness and warmth of the mids.All-in-all these are great speakers, but if you can part with some extra cash, consider going to the next level up if your room is on the larger side.

4Polk TL350 Review
By Herbert Goldman
This 5-speaker system, coupled with the Polk DSW550Pro 400w powered subwoofer is such an upgrade over what I had, I'm thrilled. There's clarity, separation and definition I've never heard in my listening room, in both music and movies. No more muddy dialogue. And explosions? Forget about it! All told, I spent $1125, which I consider to be excellent value. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is the somewhat skimpy power handling capability of the satellites, as they start to buzz when I really cranked it up. I was going to buy a more powerful receiver but now I'm not so sure.

5Solid Performer
By wmabrad
I'm using these with the Yamaha RX-A720 receiver and Polk 505W subwoofer, as well as two additional Polk TL3 speakers to provide a 7.1 channel system. These are set up on Sanus HTB-7 speaker stands (recommended - the speaker will attach to the stand with one (provided) screw) with 16 gauge speaker wire. Great distortion-free sound with clear, sharply focused mids and highs, even at higher listening levels than I prefer to use. This relatively modest set-up really shows off the audio on a good Blu-ray. For a small to medium sized listening area I don't see why you'd need more than this.

4Great sound, decent features, terrible remote/GUI
By Nathan Beauchamp
I bought the STR-DN1000 as an upgrade to my old Yamaha receiver that didn't have audio decoding through HDMI which I really needed since I've recently added a couple additional HDMI components to my set-up and needed HDMI switching. I bought it based on reviews of sound quality (anyone saying this amp has anything less than great sound doesn't know what they're talking about or doesn't have their amp set up correctly!), price, and features (4X HDMI being the most important). I am relatively pleased with my new receiver. Sound and video processing are both excellent, and aside from a few issues, this is a great receiver. Before I go into more detail, here is my home theater set-up:1) 5.1 surround sound consisting of: Polk Audio TSi200 L + R speakers, a Polk CS20 Center Channel Speaker, and a Yamaha subwoofer and two Yamahah back channel L & R speakers.4) A Sony DVP-NS700H/B DVD player5) Toshiba 42" Regaza LCD6) Comcast Digital Cable box7) WD TV Live HD Media PlayerAll devices connected using Version 1.3 Category 2 HDMI Cables.Setting things up:Set-up is a breeze. Everything is laid out well enough, and the included wire-map which gives a blown-up overview of the connections makes things even easier. The wire screws for connecting the speakers are made of plastic and are not as easy to turn as I might have liked, but this was a minor issue at best. They do support Banana jacks if that's your thing. I had all my speaker wires and HDMI cables connected in about 10 minutes (all of them were already in place so it might take significantly longer if you are running new wire). Just a note for reciever set-ups: give yourself an extra 3-4 feet of wire for each speaker so you can connect your amp OUTSIDE your AV cabinet/rack. This will make things much easier because you can work on the amp with it's back facing you!GUI (Graphic User Interface), Programing, and Auto Calibration:The DN1000 comes with a built in GUI for adjusting settings. It is a rudimentary text based interface in black, white and blue, but it is easy to navigate and use even if it isn't pretty. I was easily able to program in radio pre-sets, assign inputs *More on that to come*, and run the Auto Calibration. Auto Calibration involves connecting a provided mic and placing it in the correct location and then letting the amp put out some test tones to each speaker and the amp. The whole thing takes about 30-40 seconds. The manual states that this will involve "very loud" sounds, so I was a bit worried what that would be like. Thankfully it wasn't loud at all, so don't get freaked out when the manual warns you to watch out for small children, dogs, and angry neighbors. The GUI could be a bit more intuitive; you are frequently required to git an 'option' button that is on the remote itself. It would have been much simpler to just have that button in the layout of the GUI itself.Programing custom inputs and renaming inputs was my biggest complaint with this amp. First, you CANNOT re-map the TV, Satelite, DVD, etc., buttons to be linked with the HDMI inputs. Each time you re-map an input it asks for both an audio and video input. I wanted to re-map the DVD button on the remote to work with my HDMI DVD player. I was able to choose the correct HDMI in, but because the amp also requires an audio input, you are FORCED to choose from coaxial, analog LR channel or digital. Choosing any of these overrides the HDMI's sound, and gives you video but no sound! This is incredibly frustrating and very stupid on Sony's part since the amp supports HDMI sound processing natively and all they would need to do is tweak the GUI to allow the user to select either HDMI or 'None' for sound input! I called Sony tech support to verify this is the case and they said they have no plans to issue a firmware update to correct this issue. I was able to re-name the HDMI inputs to DVD, WD LIVE, and COMCAST so that the amp displays the correct input when one of the HDMI buttons is pushed, but that isn't ideal considering the layout of the remote:The Remote:On first glance, the remote appears to be well laid out and to have excellent built quality (no squeeks when you hit the buttons, feels nice and solid in your hand, responsive buttons, etc). It is solidly made, but functionally it has some major flaws:1) Because there are nice big, well labeled "DVD, TV, Satelite, etc." buttons on the top third of the remote, it will be highly confusing to have to explain to non-tech savvy people "when you want to watch a DVD you hit HDMI 3, not DVD" or something similar due to the inability of the receiver to re-map those buttons! Basically the usefulness of having 'quick launch' buttons on the remote is destroyed by not being able to map them correctly!2) The mute button location is horrible. It is at the bottom lower third of the remote on the left side. It is also the smallest button on the remote and a real pain to hit with your thumb since it requires balancing the very end of the remote in your hand or using two hands. In my opinion, the button you're most likely going to use more than any other should be easily accessible!Sound Quality:I put the amp through its paces with the following:1) Comcast TV (College Football) with Dolby Digital Surround2) Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (DVD) & The Matrix (DVD)3) Various lossless audio files streamed over my WD media streamer4) Battlestar Galactica HD streamed over my WD media streamerSurround sounds is just about perfect. Crystal clear highs, nice punch with the bass (although my sub really isn't anything to write home about) and excellent, authentic reproduction of even complex sound files like Feist and Metallica playing from a FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) file. I ran through a few excellent (in my opinion) surround sound movies and all sounded fantastic. Orcs screaming from behind me, thunderous sounds of war, the steely tones of Mr. Smith threatening Neo, all sounded lovely.Video Quality:HDMI video pass through was great. Suffice it to say that I didn't use this receiver to decoded low-res video files (something it does, but according to other reviews not that well). The video decoder in my WD media streamer does that job. I can confirm that the receiver did not affect inherent video quality to either good or ill.Aesthetics:This is a slick receiver and looks great on my AV rack. It matches my DVD player which I guess is a good thing, and even (sort of) matches my Toshiba TV. The LED screen is adequate if not amazing. It is easy to read from across the room (about 12 feet in my smallish living room). Text is clear and crisp which is all I really need.Heat:This unit does produce more heat than my old Yamaha, but much less than my friend's Onkyo (you could fry an egg on that thing!). In a well ventilated AV rack or cabinet it should never be an issue. Conclusions:For the price (sub $300 range) there isn't a better option out there as of this review. You could spend a hundred more and get a Pioneer (which does come with an ipod connect wire included in the price) but you're not gaining anything other than a few more connection options. Sound quality wise, this receiver is very, very good. If you can live with the crap remote and a few problems with the GUI, it's well worth the price. I'll probably just get a Harmony remote to make things simple for my family and friends.4/5 Stars. Thanks for reading my review. Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer them in the comments section.

5I like this receiver a lot.
By L. Ross
I have had this receiver since Aug. 1, 2009, and am very happy with it. It is missing some features like S-VHS inputs but none that I care about. I purchased it to use with HDMI devices in a 5.1 setup in one room. It works great for me and I highly recommend it.PLUSES:* Excellent audio.* Good GUI that is easy to use, but you must read the manual first and consult it as you go (at least I had to).* Good readable front and on-screen display with options for what is displayed while unit is operating (device, sound field, etc) and nameable inputs.* Four HDMI inputs.* Attractive design.* Exceptional Auto Format Decoding that produces very good sound from 2-channel sources with clear centered dialogue and some LFE output. I use this setting exclusively for all devices and it unfailingly detects the proper format.* Very easy and very accurate auto speaker setup using included microphone. It set my front speakers to large instead of small but other than that I didn't have to change any of the settings.MINUSES* Poor manual. Too small in size, not well-written. This seems like a common problem with electronics these days, but maybe it is just because devices are more complicated.* You must purchase a separate device to use with iPod/iPhone.* No S-VHS inputs (not at all important to me, but might be to some users).* Somewhat confusing speaker input placement on back of receiver. (I would have put the front speaker inputs above the surround back inputs and next to the center channel input.)I use the receiver with a Sony LCD TV, Samsung Blu-ray player, Cox Cable DVR, Tivo HD, Energy Classic speakers and Infinity subwoofer. No compatibility problems encountered. I use it is a smallish room (11 x 13) and hardly ever set the volume above 35, so it seems to have plenty of power. Before I bought this receiver, I tried a Pioneer VSX-919, which is a good receiver that gets excellent reviews. However, I could never get it to sound right to me. The Sony sounded good to me from the get go. That doesn't mean one is better than the other, but for me the Sony was the better-sounding receiver. One feature I really liked on the Pioneer was iPod/iPhone support without having to buy add-on devices. Sony and other manufacturers should do that!I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to others who want a mid-range receiver with good sound, good features and nice appearance.

5The simple answer: It's really good...
By Michael Trevino
For what it is, a mid-range priced receiver, it's really good. Are there better receivers? Sure. Am I an audio-phile (or whatever)? No. Can I tell the difference between loud-and-distorted and loud-and-clear? Yes. Am I going to drop more than a grand for a receiver? No. Am I going to spend the least amount possible for the basics in a receiver? No. Am I happy with this receiver and it's performance? Yes; very much so.The context-I have a medium to small size living room, 14 x 19 feet, hardwood floors, carpet with some natural shades (helps with reducing reverb and echo), a pre-wired system, hooked up to a PS3 with HDMI cables; and to the cable box with HDMI. More importantly I have this receiver hooked up to the Mirage Nanostat 5.1 speaker system (with the sold-separately center channel). And it sounds flippin' great! The receiver has enough power to fill our living room with sound loud enough to wake the neighbors, but we don't ever need to have it that loud. More importantly, it's clear and sharp... no muddled noise. The first movie we watched with this receiver was Braveheart... a good test in music, chaotic battle scenes, and discerning heavy Scottish accents. It passed with flying colors, the girlfriend and I smiled at the quality of the sound; it really is nice having a theater experience at home. The rating-I haven't explored all the features yet, and since I only have two components connected... probably won't anytime soon. But I think the up-conversion will be nice when I steal back the Wii from my parents.I rated the "Ease of Use" around the half-way point. The good thing is that the included mic and auto-setup is pretty slick and neat (and was easy to use), but as with all the receivers I've ever had, some of the terminology is difficult to understand. Many settings I probably won't ever use. And there exists the potential for endless weekends of complicated audio tweaks. When I was younger, stuff like that would turn me on. Now, I'm happy to get everything set up and watching a blu-ray as fast as possible (and why I loved the auto-setup).It also looks great. The piano-black-almost-button-less-front-plate looks sharp, real sharp... a welcome detraction from the sneezed-on-overload-of-buttons of regular receivers. So, all in all. 5 stars. In my opinion, it does what it does extremely well. Sounds great, looks great, at a price I was comfortable with.
