JBL SB 300 Soundbar and 150-Watt Subwoofer

Product Description

Many home theater installations require five loudspeakers, a subwoofer and miles of speaker wire. The JBL SB 300 greatly simplifies that equation. Its a complete home theater sound system comprised of only a single amplified soundbar and a wireless powered subwoofer. Just connect the soundbar directly to your television, DVD player or game console, and plug the subwoofer into any convenient power outlet. Youll enjoy rich, full-spectrum 2.1 - channel output that dramatically improves the sound of any TV monitor. Or you can select 3-D surround processing to create a realistic 360-degree soundstage electronically. Either way, the SB 300 delivers true JBL performance with the absolute minimum number of components – and all without a speaker wire in sight.

4One of the best in this category for the price
By Paul P
JBL has done a really nice job with this soundbar home theater solution. The styling is very nice on the soundbar itself, although the subwoofer is not quite as pretty, but it's wireless and you can hide it behind a plant if you don't like the looks. A couple of things impressed me. First, it really sounded good. Very balanced sound with completely flat tone control adjustments on the TV. I also like the fact that the subwoofer has an adjustable crossover, so if I want to boost the bass control on my TV, and can control how muddy the bass sounds by dialing down the crossover frequency to tighten it up and make it more musical. Most of the other soundbars I have auditioned are all preset with limited or no adjustability. The sub also has a sub level control on the sub itself. It would be nice to have that on the credit card sized remote, but with these type systems, you are probably gonna have it close to maximum output anyway in a good sized room. The fact that there are 2 inputs, one digital optical input and one analog is also helpful, so you can connect an mp3 player or your smart phone easily with a 3.5mm mini-plug to stereo rca cable adapter.Bear in mind, if you are looking for the true surround sound experience, this will not be anywhere close to the sound of a high quality receiver with 5.1, 7.1, or 9.2 surround sound. But if you want to greatly improve TV sound, simply and easily, this is a great way to do it. Connection is simple: one optical digital cable from the TV to the soundbar. Plug it in, then plug in the subwoofer in the desired location. Press the pair button on the sub, the light flashes 2 seconds then goes solid. You are done. Enjoy.Compared to The Bose Cinemate series II, the Bose might have a slight sound advantage, but requires a wire from the remote control receiver to the bass module and wires from the bass module to the 2 satellite speakers. The satellite speakers may require a wall mount speaker bracket or stands at additional cost (in addition to the $599 retail verses $499 on the JBL). The Polk IHT6000 is same retail price, or $50 less on sale, but sub has less punch and no adjustable crossover. The LG has bluetooth, and more inputs, but max volume is wimpy at best. My best advice, go listen to this at the store, bring your favorite bluray concert video and go from there. But this is a top ten contender.

5Just wow.
By KTGiang
I purchased this thing at a local retail store and you'll need to hear it to believe this thing. By comparison, this soundbar is one of the best available on the market at a great price. It can be turned up louder than you'll ever need the soundbar to be going and you'll be impressed with this purchase. There is no noticeable distortion that I could hear of when turned all the way up. The only downside to this JBL is the fact that you don't get the actual physical surround sound itself. Simulated surround sound will never sound good as a good old 5.1 system but it's just not fair to be comparing the two.The bass of that is including with this thing is wireless and packs quite a punch when compare it with the PolkAudio IHT3000, IHT4000, or IHT6000. Some say the sound is comparable to a Bose Cinemate II but I think the JBLs sound better. That Bose bass is just not enough for myself. This thing has the slickest look of any soundbar out there. I just wish it were a little shorter but with the same audio quality. The setup couldn't be simpler, you just run a single wire into the tv. It only includes a standard RCA cable so make sure to buy an optical cable. At $499, this things a steal.Buy it if you want some good sound with a simple setup. Don't buy it if you really want that physical surround sound and the pain of hiding all those wires.

5Luke, I am your father.
By Crease in the Page
I'll start with what I don't like... the subwoofer looks like Darth Vader's helmet. And I can't put a plant on top of it because it's not flat. That is the only thing I don't like. But wow, the sound. Full, excellent range with no distortion at full volume. Not that anyone would want it at full volume, unless you've truly got a theatre. The surround sound is really superior for a soundbar. There is definitely a sense of sound moving from one place to another. True, it would be better if you had speakers mounted all over the room and made it truly surround, but this is plenty good. Probably the reason it works so well is the length of the soundbar: 46 inches. Very long and thin. Like a light-saber.Did I mention the sound? Wow. Really excellent.I like the pairing on these. My other sound system has channels that you have to switch to match the soundbar to the wireless sub, but with this system you just press the "pairing" buttons on both units within 30 seconds of each other, and voila! My other sound system has a problem with interfering with other wireless devices around the room. It slows my wireless internet, etc. So I turned on my other sound system with its wireless woofer, and my computer and its wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, put it all right near this new JBL sound system, all in an effort to screw up the JBL's wireless feature... just to see what would happen. But it kept going strong and steady and didn't interfere with anything else in the room. The subwoofer has an Hz crossover adjustment so that you can fill in the sound from the soundbar with the sound from the sub; it's not just a woofer, but also another speaker. There is also a volume control on the sub in case you want to rattle your walls a little more. The whole thing is very easy to set up. Took me 5 minutes to get it out of the enormous box, and 2 to get it all plugged in.The force is strong with this one.

4Finally
By T. J. Wolfe
After much research, this is one of the only economically priced surround-sound amps that decodes the surround-sound information in the amp itself before passing video on up to the TV. Many of the HDMI switching amps out there only switch the video, and do NOT decode surround (due to the DRM encryption on some HDMI signals) only 2ch PCM.Look over Sony's site, they have alot of good info for this unit. For the price it would be really hard to beat.Nice Stuff:-Surround decode from the HDMI sources-The remote also controls my Sony Blu-ray player-The Main L-R speaker outs are selectable to use either full range speakers, or small surround speakers-You can Name all the inputs whatever you want-For a small home theater, sound quality is good-auto shut off after 30mins of inactivityNot so nice stuff-Only three (3) HDMI inputs, i could have used more for later, but for now all I needed was my DishNetwork box, Xbox and blu-ray-Only one of the three digital audio inputs (2 optical, 1 coax) is programmable to any input. This would have been nice to be able to assign any of them to the remaining analog video inputs-Analog video inputs (Wii in my case) do not go out the HDMI output. While I didn't expect this, it would have been a nice touch. As it is I have to change my TV's input to play Wii. This is no biggie, but it would have been nice!In summary, this is a great replacement amp if you already had an older surround unit, or if you want to pick and chose your speakers. Like I said, it's nice that it has a built in selectable crossover for the main L-R speakers. My last Sony amplifier has lasted nearly 8 years. The only reason for me to replace it was to make switching video sources easier. There, this is my 2¢ on the matter

4Solid entry level unit for the money
By Snmi43
Overall this is a great deal for someone looking for a straight-to-the-point, entry level 5.1 system. It doesn't have an onscreen menu, or tons of HDMI ports, but for less than $200, it provides plenty of power and enough options to create an economical yet strong performance package. If you want to make your first jump to intro home theater but don't want to sweat the details, this does the job well. I would consider my setup to be a simple, economical, and practical system for someone looking for a good overall sound without getting too technical or overinvested.I paired this receiver with an Energy RC Micro 5.1 speaker system and a 40" Sony Bravia LCD in a 14x20 room. (You could always go with cheaper speakers, but if you're going to spend extra anywhere, spend it on the speakers.) I hooked up a BluRay player, HD cable box, Wii, and an iPod dock. The receiver doesn't have lots of inputs - 1 HDMI out and 3 in (most people always want one more than what they have anyway). Extra HDMI's always help with avoiding early obsolescence, but I'm not planning on adding any other devices. If you have multiple game systems and other audio devices you're planning on adding down the road, I would move on to something more advanced. Even if you have an older DVD player, you can hook it up just fine, however HDMI will make your life much easier with this unit. (I originally started with an old compnonent DVD player and then ended up getting a BluRay player - The receiver WILL NOT send the audio through the HDMI OUT to the tv unless you hook up through the HDMI IN. You will have to send an additional audio signal such as optical if you use analog inputs).Installation was tedious but not terribly difficult. It does not come with a microphone to help calibrate the surround sound balance, but it provides a test tone that you can activate to help you adjust them manually as you listen from your "sweet spot". Again, if you want the bells and whistles, you gotta pay more than $200. The menu on the receiver takes a bit of getting used to, but after playing around, you'll get the hang of it. There are some pretty advanced features as well, such as setting speaker distance and indicating speaker size. I would have liked an EQ with more than just treble and bass. Night mode is a nice feature as well - kind of like a "loudness" button that helps when using at lower volumes, boosting the treble and bass appropriately. The preset 5.1 surround setting are okay, but who really uses "arena"? Just go out and buy the "live" version and stop annoying your guests. For music, I prefer to listen with a flat EQ anyway and I've kept mine on the recommended setting for daily TV watching and rarely have to touch the thing. However, spend the time to tweak your settings with DVDs and BluRay - You DO get better performance - worth fiddling with the menu before getting the popcorn. The radio is well, just that - it works just fine, although again, who really puts in 40 presets? I don't know if it saves the settings if the power goes out - I think it does but I'm not really willing to chance it at this point. Reception strength is pretty good. The iPod dock I hooked up (not included) was a pretty simple connection and integrates nicely. I also hooked up a wireless speaker device (also not included) to a pair of audio outs on the back and now I can fill my first and second floors plus my backyard with whatever my neighbors find most annoying. The remote is very good overall. I also have a Sony TV so the Sync function works very well. This way I rarely have to touch the receiver - the volume adjusts with my cable remote and if I change inputs, it changes the settings accordingly based on what I'm doing. When I don't want all the speakers on, I simply shut off the receiver and the tv automatically reverts to its normal speakers and vice versa. When I turn off the tv, the receiver goes off as well - seamlessly (HUGE PLUS FOR ME HERE). Some of these features might work with non-Sony TVs, but I'm not sure - you'll have to do some research there. Are their better equipped receivers for more money? Yes. But for someone like me who doesn't need everything they have to offer, I can take that extra money and spend it elsewhere. This model is budget friendly, has solid sound and power, and is fairly straightforward once you learn the menu. I wanted something that would enhance my daily tv viewing, movie watching, and had the versatility for entertaining as well. Plus I wanted something that was simple to use and can become a relatively seamless addtion to my daily routine. I'd actually give it 4 1/2 stars if I could.PS - Please be aware that hooking up a Wii via HDMI does nothing to enhance the quality of the image or sound, but it did make things much easier to hook up and use on a daily basis.

5Great Receiver ~$200 or less Price. No Complaints
By John Jacobs Jr.
First off, i cant stand when people review budget receivers( >$200) and then compare them to really expensive ones with lots more features and then rate this 3 or 4 stars because of it. I am by no means saying this is the best receiver out there by giving it 5 stars, but within its class of receivers, this is a good one. It was a breeze to setup, aesthetically pleasing and great sound with decent power.Three HDMI ports, thats something to note but plenty for me. I have the Playstation(blu ray) connected, My cable box and my tv plugged in. I have a BIC f-12 subwoofer and some bic DV64 speakers hooked up with a center channel. I couldn't be happier with the sound and features. Its simple, easy to use and doesnt have too many bells and whistles that I wouldnt use and clutter my menus.I am by no means an expert audiophile, so my review is coming from technically savy, but audio average joe. I think this or the Deno 391 were my only options and decided since i had a lot of sony products to keep the remotes down to just 2 instead of adding a 3rd. I dont have a fancy remote that programs all the units, someday maybe.Lastly, the AM/FM works great and the antenna gets a strong signal.Overally, couldnt be happier and got what anyone should expect at this price. Oh one last thing, one of my speaker wires were shorting the system, the receiver has a protected mode that keeps it safe from any unsafe energy source or bad connections. To reset, hold down the power button till it says "CLEARED"

5Outstanding Bang for the Buck, Future Proof (7.1 & 3D), iPhone App is Great, Buy an Airport Express Too
By P. Colin McGraw
I tend to do a lot of research before making large purchasing decisions and so far this receiver is receiving a pretty rosy reception! Its predecessor, the 1019, was CNET's and Gizmodo's top mid-range receiver. Both reviewers had just as high hopes for the 1020, and Gizmodo already called it the best receiver $550 can buy, saying the 1020 "hit the sweet spot" that gave the most bang for buyer's buck. The critics I read all raved about the excellent sound quality, but the 1020 brings some new offerings to the table for a mid-range receiver. In short, the most valuable features you get with this model that you don't get with the next step down are:1. A fifth HDMI port in back, an extra sixth in front (for digital cameras, computers, etc.).2. Analog video upscaling (which I don't care too much about since most of my content is HD already or played through an upscaling player).3. The iContolAV iPhone app. Very cool for controlling volume and switching inputs. Works simply by having your receiver connected to ethernet and your iPhone connected to the network via WiFi. A few times the app has had trouble properly connecting, but it usually works well.4. Internet radio with programmable stations, which is cool, though you can't currently control the station selections from the iPhone App, unfortunately.5. A color configuration interface output to your TV via the HDMI output. I can't imagine trying to configure all my speakers without seeing a graphical representation of their location on screen. That last feature feature, the HDMI 1.4 ports that support 3D, the 7.1 surround capabilities, excellent sound quality and the iPhone App are what made the VSX-1020 the clear choice for me. I also appreciated the automatic calibration with the included microphone and the included iPod cable/compatibility, but those weren't as strong of selling points. The only negatives of note for me is that the little front port cover is a little cheap. It's not even a door, simply a little plastic piece that pops out if you push one side. I, like others, have also experienced the issue where the receiver switches to TV/Sat when first turned on, but I've yet to determine whether that's a problem with the receiver itself or my Harmony universal remote (I'll update the review as I get more information). One last tip to buyers, however. If you're considering listening to your phone's music over Bluetooth by buying the $99 AS-BT100 adapter, I'd consider buying a $99 Apple Airport Express instead (assuming your music is managed through iTunes). It lets you stream music from your computer to the receiver over WiFi and control what's playing via iTunes or Apple's robust "Remote" iPhone app, but more importantly the Airport Express acts as a USB print server and a one port wireless bridge (something that lets you connect wired devices to a wireless network). That wireless bridge capability is especially valuable, since you'll need it or something similar for internet radio and iControlAV iPhone app support if your VSX-1020 receiver isn't close to your wireless router (mine isn't). Buying the Airport Express kills two birds with one stone.UPDATE:A few ideas have been thrown out by other Amazon posters to help alleviate the issue with the receiver switching to TV/Sat when it first turns on. The first idea is to change the receiver's settings thusly:"1 Press Receiver , then press Home Menu.2 Select `System Setup', then press ENTER.3 Select `Other Setup', then press ENTER.4 Select `HDMI Setup', then press ENTER.5. Set Control to 'Off'."The second idea is to adjust your TV settings like so."Go into Menu under HDMI-CEC and turn it Off. If the set is a Samsung look for AnyNet+ (default is normally On) and turn it Off."I'm still having issues going directly to a given HDMI input when the unit first power on (going to "HDMI Input 1" simply toggles the current HDMI input instead of going directly to the one you want), but I've made the quirk tolerable by programming one of the buttons on my universal remote to toggle inputs, so it's easy to fix.

3Packed with features but does have some flaws
By Rich Gold
This thing is loaded with features. My favorite by far is playing internet radio directly from an internet connection. It has an easy way to program and rename stations from an http site. It has a nice glossy front and runs really cool especially compared to my old Onkyo oven. The iphone control is pretty cool although it would be nice if you could turn on the receiver from the iphone app. It plays an ipod well and does display cover art for music although very small. It's pretty cool that you can use a standard USB cable to connect an ipod as well as some other USB devices (Haven't played with that). I do wish the USB input was on the back. I have an ipod dock that i want to leave plugged in and it looks pretty bad plugged into the front. This thing switches inputs relatively quickly and can scroll through audio settings without long interruptions in sound. Powering up on the other hand is extremely sluggish. I timed 40 seconds from power up to get picture and sound rolling. I really like that you can customize the input names although the method of scrolling through each letter takes a while. It's also nice to be able to hide some inputs so that you don't have to scroll through a bunch of inputs that are never used when scanning through. The remote is setup like a universal remote. You have to select a specific mode for most inputs. Say you're in ipod mode, you have to go back into receiver mode to use many of the settings buttons. This makes it very difficult to program a universal remote to control the receiver. you have to have a different set of arrow commands programmed for each input. Also, for programming a universal remote. All inputs have a separate button that you can program except of course HDMI inputs which are the ones I use. To select one of the 5 HDMI inputs you can continually press the HDMI button to get the one you want which is not a good method when you just want to hit one button to get to the correct input. There is a backwards way to reassign the analog input selection to use an HDMI input then rename it, but it takes some work. It is impressive that the included remote can be programmed for other devices and can even learn commands and perform simple macros. The display on the unit I received has a small thread of some sort hanging down inside the display. This is probably just rare defect but it is annoying when looking at the display.HDCP ERRORI see this message flash multiple times on the display every time I power on. This is some kind of copyright nonsense built into HDMI cables. Although all HDMI inputs on my TV are HDCP compliant and I have used the same HDMI cables on a previous receiver without issues I had all kinds of problems getting my receiver to work at all because of this error. Time and time again I would be watching TV and then without touching anything I would see this error, then no inputs would work and it would take a while for anything to come back up. After playing with lots of setting and trying multiple cables and inputs on my TV now I just get the error without losing picture and sound. The manual says this: "Some components that are compatible with HDCP still cause this message to be displayed, but so long as there is no problem with displaying video, this is not a malfunction." Ummm, sorry Pioneer but when an error is displayed incorrectly that is called a bug and IS a problem. I'm sure they are being forced by law to incorporate this HDCP stuff in their unit but they are doing a very poor job.Zone 2Buying this receiver I had a plan to wire an adjacent room as a zone 2 so that I could play music in that other room. Unfortunately the zone 2 feature on this unit does not work with any digital inputs. Because I have everything connected via HDMI this makes zone 2 a worthless feature to me. As an alternative I decided to hook up the other room to the Speaker B connection. This won't allow me to listen to two different inputs simultaneously as zone 2 does, but at-least I can listed to digital inputs in the other room when I want. The problem is for some reason the speaker selection cannot be controlled with the remote. So I have to walk to the receiver to select to use Speaker B and then walk back to turn it off That may not sound like much, but part of my plan was to use an RF remote to control the music in the other room while in the other room. There is just no way to really get this unit to perform in such a scenario.

4Very good performance and versatility with a few shortcomings
By WDH
I picked up a 1020 over the weekend. I have been building custom cabinetry and needed a slimmer (and cooler) receiver for our secondary viewing room and the 1020 seemed to fit the bill in large part based upon a pleasant experience with the 919/1019 and the elite 21.For reference, the 1020 is replacing an Onkyo 1007, which I really enjoyed, but was a bit big for the cabinet and largely unused with a baby's bedroom nearly adjacent to the area. Keep in mind, the Onkyo weighs 52 lbs and draws nearly 11 amps - not a fair fight between the two.In comparison to the 1019/919 (which powers my second and third zones), the 1020 looks very similar, but Pioneer removed the blue led power button (they did the same with the bdp-320 from the 51fd last year as well). The front panel buttons have been reconfigured slightly, but overall the two look very similar.I have the 1020 configured as 5.1 plus wides. The speaker setup was pretty easy, but it appears that setting it up as normal plus wides would prevent you from operating Zone 2 despite the manual saying the contrary. In terms of audio quality, the receiver sounds very good and similar to the 1019/919. That said, when turned louder (say -5db), it appears to lose its legs a bit sooner than the 1019. I heard a bit more distortion in playing music loudly (i was alternating the same speakers and source via speaker switch before I had the two connected). That said, I would think most folks would not be able to tell a difference at normal volume levels, but the power draw cut from last year does seem to manifest itself at loud levels in my amateurish testing. Please do not try to pull every thread in my comparison - just an average guy comparing the two side by side.Running MCACC was as simple as other pioneer models, but the system did seem to be a bit too generous as to the speaker size of the speakers in my setup (audyssey classified them as small and set the individual speaker crossovers at 100hz). I have been using the wide listening mode and have found it reasonably effective in providing a broader sound array for the wide room. I will need more critical listening time to compare it to Audyssey DSX's wide presence processing mode. Overall, I am pleased with the sound quality of the 1020, but it could benefit by a bit more power. I would caution about tying to drive large or inefficient speakers with this receiver if your listening preferences are very loud. The remote is an improvement in that it is learning, but a step back in dark room navigation. Yes the keys glow in the dark, but labels are small and difficult to quickly identify. It is miles ahead of Denon's odd remotes, but lacks some of the simple and easy to identify buttons of Onkyo. The receiver has run cooly, which is an improvement from the space-heater my Onkyo could be.The receiver does offer a really good listening experience for a very light (and presumably efficient) unit. That said, I do lament a few things: onscreen osd - at least volume/source/audio codec; a slightly ergonomic remote; and assignable speakers to let you customize presence and zone 2.Overall, I am happy with the unit and pleasantly surprise how cooly it runs.

4Better speakers please!
By Nick
I'm using it with video game consoles and cable box.Well, it's definitely a big step up after built-in TV speakers. The reciever on its own is a nice piece of gear: supports 3D, has plenty of various inputs, displays info on the TV and its own screen, the remote is easy to use. Those tiny speakers didn't really impress me, well they don't look impressive anyways, but I expected less from a subwoofer. Woofer is just right!Short story shorter - very decent package in this price range.

4Sam-Sung
By ram
Overall the system is good, very easy to set-up. Just un-pack and color match the speaker cables, plug-it in and your done.It could have been 5 stars but it doesn't have an AM tunner, most sporting events are broadcast on AM so its a big deal for me.The USB port is great, just plug-in your drive and set the input to AUX and hit play. In a hurry, you don't even need to hook up the system to a tv if you just need it for music.Image quality is good, PS3 takes care of that. Using the system just for the audio.Pros:Great SoundEasy Set-upGood image qualityCons:No AM TunnerSpeaker wires could have been of a thiker gaugeSubwoofer could have had a screen to protect it

4Great for $200
By R. Svedin
I wanted a cheap system so I purchased this one from my local store. It's fairly easy to set up and use. When I plugged my iphone in, I'm used to things working instantly but with this system, you need to wait about 10 seconds for it to recognize the iphone and then play music.Sound quality if good. Remote is easy to use.All in all, happy with my purchase. I'd recommend it for someone who wants a cheap system. Keep in mind...for $200 you are getting a dvd player, receiver, 5 speakers, 1 sub-woofer. It's inexpensive and you get a lot for the low price point. But cheaper things do tend to break more

4Good Basic Unit If You have a Samsung TV
By Glen A. Nelson
Unit has OK sound. It's nowhere near 1000 watts though. more like 100. Easy to assemble. If you need sound through the unit from the TV, you will need a fiber-optic TosLink cable in addition to the HDMI cable. Our TV, Samsung 42B450 only does audio-in on HDMI (ref p.30 in stereo user manual#. The system works great w/Samsung's AnyNet, 1 remote controls it all. DVD plays all the disks we have- CD-R w/MP3, DVD-RW and R. Bass is too strong at factory settings.Pros; low cost, goes well w/other Samsung equipment, sound is OK, small center speaker, CD-rip capable, USB and I-POD support.Cons; Front panel buttons not lighted, 1000 watt claim is a joke, proper cables are not included #HDMI and TosLink)Overall, we like and will keep the unit. It's for our formal living room and is not the main system.
