5Love it!
By Johnny Primo
Works great! Haven't tested a 3D movie yet, but the sound is amazing. Easy to hook up. The S-Air really works without a glich. Goes great with my Sony setup: XBR60LX900 3D HDTV with active shutter glasses and the PS3 (to include 3D Gaming - wipEout HD is awesome!). It has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output, perfect for me - PS3 and DirecTV box connect to the HTS, then the HTS connects to the TV. Now the only slight problem is that the device is a bit slow to remote commands when switching inputs, e.i. HDMI1, HDMI2, FM Tuner, BD player... and to the Menu (PS3 type). Other than that... simply amazing!

4good sound but slow and lacking audio input
By 3D lover
I've waited to review its 3D performance to write this review. Turns out, it's awesome!Sound is very solid, esp from those tiny speakers.I've tried 10+ HD audio blu-ray movies and they sounded just great. Its 3D video OUT is good enough not to affect my samsung 7000 series 3D plasma performance. The 2 things I would complain about:1. It's really slow. load disc, or go to menu, etc... just slow.2. The digital audio cable input, has a weird requirement of only being used when video is coming from the TV channel. So what about other devices?? I've got around the problem by tricking the receiver -- having another device sending the video to the TV, and then the digital output directly to this receiver's digital audio input. and then use the TV input channel.

3Solid System for what it is...
By cmxm
First, let me start by saying; I seldom review products online. I really enjoyed having good feedback from others before purchasing this product and thought it was a good idea to provide similar information for others. The Good:- Nice system out of the box. Clean appearance, ample connections for most home theater setups (remember, you no longer need an HDMI for the bluray player as it is built in).- Extremely simple to setup. Probably the most "plug-and-play" system I've ever seen...right down to the speaker connections.- Rear channel wireless speakers. Okay, I know... they encode/decode and sound quality is lost, they have a limited range, they still have wires (from rear receiver to speakers)... but still.... worth it. I live in a ranch house and have used these at both ends of the house (about 55ft from the receiver) and the sound is still pretty good. I like these speakers mostly because we entertain a great deal. This provides us the flexibility to connect an ipod and listen in both the living room and kitchen. Then on movie night, they return to the living room. Just an added bonus to a system like this. The Bad:- Proprietary speaker connections, so forget about swapping out Sony speakers with a better...say...center channel speaker. What you get in the box is the one you have to use.- Small sound...relatively. Let's face it; while bigger is not always better...in the speaker world is does make a difference. I am no audiophile, but this system will leave you wanting if you are looking for uniform lows across the whole field. All bass originates in the subwoofer and the other speakers sound a bit under-powered, covering only the highs and high-mid range of the spectrum. Now the caveat: if this system is for watching Blurays and TV on a casual basis, it is a very solid system. If you watch a movie a night and really like to immerse yourself in sound... you should be thinking component systems.Overall, I would recommend this system to anyone who was looking for the versatility of a wireless compatible HTIB. I enjoyed that the whole setup took no more than 10 minutes and that the overall picture and sound quality was on the higher end (for what it is). It will never compete with a purpose built custom system. If that's what you are looking for, this is not a substitute. If you're goal is to purchase a solid HTIB with wireless rear channel, this product is a great choice.

5Better design than S5300
By Y. Ning
This model is basically the same as S5300, with extra features:1. Can up-convert all video inputs to 1080P and output through HDMI. S5300 can't do this.2. Comes with a setup mic for Audessy to set up speakers automatically.S5300 doesn't have it.3. Front Speaker is smaller than those of S5300. I hooked them up on wall they look better. The front speakers of S5300 are much bigger and the rear speakers are much smaller.4. Subwoofer is taller and narrower than that of S5300. To me that is better.5. Total weight is like 10lb less than S5300.It is about $100 more than S5300. You can go with S5300 for cheaper if you don't mind those points above.

5Excellent HTIB. Great Sound for Apartments or Condos.
By S. Jhagroo
First off, I should say that I bought this from Newegg, since - at the time - Amazon had an estimated ship time of 1-2 months. I see they now have it back in stock for immediate delivery (at time of writing, anyway). Overall I will say that for the reduced price they have it at (less than $500) it's quite a bargain - and worth every penny.PACKAGING:I've included pictures of the packaging, since I assume that this doesn't really change much between either seller. Everything is packed and separated pretty solidly in thick styrofoam, the TX-SR680 receiver is located at the top, the subwoofer is at the bottom, and all speakers, accessories and cables are in between. There was some slight damage to the box in UPS shipping, but nothing out of the ordinary. The equipment inside was fairly pristine.SETUP & PERFORMANCE:The included wires with this system are 22-Gauge (for the front and center channels) and 24-Gauge (for the surrounds and rear surrounds) respectively. I replaced these with 14 Gauge wire purchased at Monoprice. That being said, I found it much simpler to use cheap banana plugs from Home Depot for connecting the wires to the receiver, since the binding posts in the back of the receiver are fairly closely placed and it's fairly tricky to thread the bare wire into the connections. The banana plugs allowed me to plug into the front, minimal fuss. I also used speaker pins for the spring clip connections in the speakers themselves, but that's a personal preference, since I like the neater look and I'm too lazy to strip wire :-).You should also know that I'm using this as a 5.1 system, I'll figure out what to do with the rear surrounds later I guess. The system worked like a charm out of the box, I have a DVD player and my PS3 connected via HDMI and use an HDMI out to the Plasma TV. Upconversion works flawlessly, picture and sound are excellent. My Blu-Ray of Serenity sounds and looks amazing through this system. Also popped in my Star Wars DVDs to see the upconverted 1080p signal at work - again, quite excellent and smooth picture. The HDMI connection carries both video and sound to the receiver from the PS3, so it's one less cable to deal with - 2 if you count the absence of a corresponding HDMI output to the TV :)I used the Audyssey setup afterwards, it matched my manual estimations fairly closely and I can definitely say I noticed an improvement in surround sound speaker volume after I did it. Sound is quite clear, system has good loudness to it and the bass sounds great in my apartment. For larger, hall-like rooms, however, the bass may not be sufficient. Movies - as stated - sound excellent.Another great thing is the on screen displays for setup functions and listening mode adjustments while the TV is switched to the HDMI input from the receiver.CONS:As awesome as this system is, I will point out a few things -1) The center channel is obviously made to lie horizontally, and yet the speaker is not shaped any differently than the front or surrounds i.e. the surface on the side is slightly curved and will rock unless you use some of the included rubber "feet". I had to pretty much guess where they should go on the underside of the speaker, which is fine since the system comes with like 20 of the things and I don't need them for any of the other speakers.2) BE VERY CAREFUL handling the subwoofer. The speaker fires down and there literally is NOTHING protecting the underside of the cabinet, which means your fingers can poke a hole quite easily through the cone if you don't watch out. Not quite sure what the Onkyo engineers were thinking when designing this, but it's a bit too easy to ruin your new purchase that way.3) iPod Dock works pretty nicely but the instructions on how to truly take advantage of it aren't very clear (press DISPLAY to get an On Screen Display of your Music and folders from iTunes). I haven't tried playing video on this yet but I did notice it detected Apple's "TV Shows" folder - perhaps I can use this instead of getting an Apple TV? Any feedback here will be welcome in the comments.4) This is my 2nd Onkyo unit so I'm used to this, but the remote can take some getting used to. There's a little bit of a lag when you navigate the on screen displays.SOME OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:I did notice some hiccups when playing sound from my TV. I don't have a set top box, signal is just basic cable coming from the wall and I have a Digital Out (Optical) running from the TV to the receiver. This could very well be the fault of the cable signal or TV since the PS3 audio comes in perfectly fine. We'll probably end up with an STB (or maybe Apple TV/Boxee) soon enough, so this should no longer be an issue. The receiver does run hot - but it hasn't been too bad for me. I have it in it's own section of my TV cabinet - with about 8 inches of space on top. The cabinet has an open back, with about 2 inches of space in front the wall. I was able to watch a movie with the front door closed with no issues but I haven't left it on for an extensive period of time while behind the closed door. Also, for those of you who are interested, I'm using the surrounds with the Atlantic Satellite SPSCUR47 2 Speaker Stands (Titanium). The speakers are attached via the included double sided tape to the base of the stand (no other practical way that I can see for attaching them) - otherwise they support these quite nicely and they look great!SUMMARY:This is a great system, I highly recommend!

4Well designed home theater package for the price
By Warren W. Smith
I just received this system last week and spent the better part of the Labor Day weekend setting it all up along with my new projector and screen. I paired the speakers with the Sanus speaker mount system to hang the front, rear and center channels. Another reviewer has already detailed the differences between this model and the next cheaper model below so I won't go into that. I would say I think it is work the extra $100 or so to get this one over the S5300 and am glad I went that route for the extra features. It did not take long to unpack and set up into my entertainment center. I had already pre-wired my home theater room with 14/2 speaker wire to where all the speakers would go so set up went quickly. The auto setup for the speakers was a snap and the system sounds great. I have a satellite receiver (very old model with old connections only available) connected via composite cables and a PS3 for BD DVD/gaming via HDMI. The output is connected to an Optoma HD20 projector via the HDMI out. Once I read the instructions more clearly on how to configure the one input for the composite cables I quickly cleared a problem I had with audio but no video output when using the satellite receiver for TV. The picture looks great with the upconvert and now I wonder if I want to upgrade to HD TV receiver in the near future to maximize the potential of the system. With the BD DVD the picture is also fantastic and the sound is perfect, making for a great home theater experience. I do not as of yet own any Blue Ray DVDs, but have tried a few regular DVDs which look great. The iPOD doc is a handy bonus which also works and sounds great.I had pre-wired the room some time back and only wired it for 5.1 so I am currently not using 2 of the speakers. I may add them in sometime in the future when I get more time and find a way to do it without making too much of a mess of the room. As it is, with just the 5.1, the sound is great and I have no complaints. I would have given it 5 stars, but as another reviewer mentioned, the system does get hot. I have not had any problems with the system shutting down however, and just notice when I put my hand in there to check it out of curiosity. I hope that it doesn't become a problem in the future, but I also do not have much experience with these types of systems as this is my first home theater receiver/sound system. I still have not played with all of the many, many features available by the system as I must admit I do not even understand them all. But out of the box with very little adjustments on my part it works great and easily met all of my expectations. I am pleased with the purchase and would recommend it to others.

4Great setup for a small to mid-sized Home Theater.
By jordan
I used the Quintet IV setup for about a year in my small-ish room and was mostly pleasantly surprised by the results and quality of this little system. Klipsch makes great speakers and this 5-channel package is no exception.Likes:As soon as you take the Quintets out of the box, you instantly know you're holding a quality product. The speakers are solidly built and moderately weighty; certainly heavier than you'd expect from a satellite speaker system. The binding post connectors are a nice touch and are much appreciated as for the price they charge, Klipsch could've just as easily equipped them with cheap spring connectors. Another nice touch is that the bases are dual purpose and can be used instead as wall mounts. You can tell thought has gone into the design of these speakers. All of my wire runs were relatively short and I fed these with 16-gauge speaker wire, which is more than enough at shorter distances.Klipsch speakers are known for being extremely efficient and these are no exception. I'd expect any modern surround receiver, regardless of price, to be able to drive them very well. I used a Pioneer VSX-21TXH, but I'd expect them perform with equal aplomb when paired with an entry-level receiver. Despite their small size, they produce the signature Klipsch horn-loaded sound: crystal-clear highs, along with excellent mids for a speaker of this size. They end up sounding much "bigger" than they really are. Klipsch recommends pairing these with a subwoofer, due to the inherent limitations of satellite speakers. I chose to use a MartinLogan Dynamo 700 (10") subwoofer which blended very well with the speakers with the subwoofer volume slightly below half (again, small room) and crossed over at 80Hz (Ideally you would set the crossover higher as the speakers bottom out at 120Hz, but individual mileage may vary). When paired with a subwoofer, this setup ebbs an flows with ease when presented with dynamic movie soundtracks and really shines with lossless Blu-ray tracks. They're excellent, unobtrusive home theater speakers that you'd be hard-pressed to beat in this price range.Dislikes:I only found two reasons to dislike the Quintet system.1) The Center channel: Even though this center employs the same horn-loaded tweeter as the satellites, along with two of the 3.5" midrange woofers, I often found dialogue to be somewhat weak and/or dull, which I found quite surprising. It lacks the clarity found in the other speakers and can be improved. This can be slightly remedied by boosting the center a db or two in your receiver.2) Music performance: These are made for home theater, and unfortunately I didn't like their performance with stereo music, even when paired with the subwoofer. Stereo imaging is quite poor and I found the trademark horn-loaded bright highs to be fatiguing when listening to music. I often had to set my receiver to "Extended [5-channel] Stereo" when listening to music to get satisfactory results, which I don't think I should have to do. Admittedly, using these as music speakers is not the best idea if you plan to do any type of critical listening as they were not made for that, which is why the 4-star rating remains. However, their performance with music was my reason for discontinuing their use as my main speakers. Conclusion: The Quintet IV system is a great system for a beginning home theater setup in small or mid-sized room and excels at playback of movie soundtracks. Get a decent subwoofer for these and they'll change your movie watching experience completely. If you plan on listening to a lot of music, however, look elsewhere; think about moving up to some small bookshelf speakers with larger enclosures for a more complete sound and better imaging.

5One of the best in it's price range.
By Corey Fisher
I recently bought this system and an extra pair of the quintet series satellite speakers to set up a 7.1 Surround packaged, I paired it with the recommended sub-woofer (the 350) and it's shocking how good it sounds. I'm using these to play True HD and DTS HD and they are stunning. We don't have a very large room so I needed something that would be a breeze to install and have look stylish on the walls. I wall-mounted these speakers and ran some cable through the walls and connected them to a pioneer 7.1 receiver. I have tested about 100 configurations to find the ideal set up for our small living room and these do not disappoint, at all. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty willing to say these are the best speakers you can get in a sub $1000 package for certain. I would only recommend these for small to medium sized living rooms and they definitely sound better then polks and bose, I don't know what hallucinogens the last guy was on... these are far superior then any polks I've heard. Do not buy if you have an open or spacious room, but still, they might be alright for that too. they are pretty loud, clear and have a lot of bass, we don't like to turn these up too loud or they hurt. Highly recommended, don't think twice if your setting up for a small room with HD and limited room. (edit) To add, I use a Pioneer Elite Receiver SC-37 (has been replaced with SC-57) and is a 20ft x 25ft room. Hope that helps, it is now several months later and I have yet to find a set-up that works as flawlessy as mine does, in fact, I compare dto a $130,000 custom home theater and my set up is better calibrated and therefore sounds better for the space it's in. The customer theater was much larger and not as well calibrated, so I could hear the surround sound as well as ours and I did this for a miniscule fraction of the cost, abotu $4000 compared to $130,000!!

2better ways to spend your money
By Zachary Cheeley
I saw the great reviews and thought id give these a try. I bought a set on Ebay for 260 and paired them with a 110 watt x 7 channel harman/kardon 7300 receiver. i thought they were awesome because they were a terrific upgrade from my logitech z-5500 setup, and that's where most people are coming from: this is their first non-htiab, or first 5.1 setup. and for a first listen, they sound damn impressive (especially for their size). but not 4 or 5 stars people! these sound mediocre compared to other SLIGHTLY LARGER speakers, and that comparison is not reflected in a 5 star rating!size is key with speakers, only buy these if they are the absolute largest setup you can fit in your residence.otherwise, keep looking:the reason i say this is because, as luck would have it, i found a set of klipsch rs-35's (2003 era, 97Db efficiency, 125 rms, retail $500) at a pawn shop a week later for $70, and plugged them in to the same setup i described above. The difference was staggering. i thought i had upgraded from my logitech setup, but THIS was the upgrade, there was a much wider margin of appreciable difference between these 2 sets of speakers, the quintets and the rs-35's, than between the logitechs and the quintets.move some crap around and get a space cleared for something bigger, the rs-35s are 9 lbs and fit on a bookshelf, there are guys selling their reference series klipsch stuff, and you can piece together something 10x as good for **about** the same money. do a bit of research on wattage, efficiency rating, and ohm level pairing and you'll know a good buy when you see one. There's a GREAT secondary market for quality speakers, which represent a technology that hasn't evolved like the rest of your stereo;-)I hope this was an adequate counterpoint to all those 5 star ratings. if you're not picky, these are a great no hassle, low profile, easy solution to surround sound at a decent price. if you really care...on a somewhat emotional level...about sound quality, then this solution is not for you. you, my friend have some research in front of you.

5Very nice desktop replacement
By William A. Nolan
I am a fan of smaller laptops if you plan to actually carry them around. This is a pretty good sized machine, but I wanted it to use in place of a Desktop system, so it will seldom move from the top of my computer table. The screen is great -- very, very clear at 1920x1080 native resolution. I actually run it with a second, 24" monitor connected, and it has no problem with the dual monitor setup. While not a barn-burner, it is pretty fast. The experience index numbers are: Processor, 7.8, Memory. 7.8, Desktop Graphics, 5.8, Gaming Graphics, 6.7, and Primary HDD, 5.9. It also doesn't get hot at all -- very cool running. The reason for two graphics scores is because it has two graphics controllers. It uses the IBM controller for most applications, and switches to the Nvidia for games and other more graphics intensive software. We actually bought two of these. My wife uses here for Photoshop, Lightroom, Office, and also plays World of Warcraft. She says it is plenty fast for WOW, and the graphics are very smooth. When not playing games, we both tend to have a lot of programs open at once. We both teach college, and when we are working on class stuff it is common to have Word and several browser windows open at once. If I am doing research, I may have as many as a dozen sources open in browser windows. It handles this with no issues. I teach photography, and do professional work as well, so it would be common for me to have Adobe Lightroom open and also have a dozen or so photos open in Photoshop at the same time. These are 18 MP photos, so they aren't small files. Again, it keeps up with no issues. All in all, we are very happy with these Laptops. To make it better, we bought them before the price went up a couple of hundred dollars, but they are still an excellent computer at the current price.

5Fix the specs
By Ner
It seems like a great buy, but Amazon needs to fix the specs for screen resolution. In the Item Description, it lists screen resolution as 1920 x 1080 pixels. But in the Product Description it mentions Max Screen Resolution 1600 x 900 pixels. This makes it difficult to purchase a computer because there is another item that is cheaper than this one but also lists 1600 x 900 pixels as the Resolution. I do not know if amazon made a mistake, or if it really is only 1600 x 900 pixels.

5Excellent entry-level home theater system
By LizO
Props to Yamaha for putting out an entry-level system that offers great sound and options within a receiver at a budget price. Some manufacturers skimp on their entry-level or lower priced electronics but Yamaha got this one right and for my needs, they didn't skimp at all.I upgraded from a 20 year old Sony 2 channel system (connected to the TV via composite cables and PC via 3.5 mm to RCA) that was on its last legs. It served me well through the years but with better quality sound through television, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs and even streaming, it seemed like a great time to retire the old system before it gave out completely. Given my budget constraints and living in multiple-family housing, a high end, blow-your-ears-off music and theater/movie sound wasn't in the cards. Yamaha has a good reputation and reading the reviews on this and other entry-level systems Yamaha has, it was right up my alley. This system has not disappointed. What can I say; it has great sound for my needs. I have it set up with 16 gauge speaker wire (the speaker wire you get in the box isn't suitable for hemming clothing IMO). Connected to it is a Sony Bravia TV, a Sony BDPS380 Blu-Ray/DVD/streaming player which is a great player for the price and my computer via 25 ft 3.5 mm stereo cable. The TV is connected via Toslink optical audio cable and HDMI. Blu-ray/DVD/streaming player connected via HDMI. The living room is roughly 15' x 14' and even on lower volumes, this sounds great. Piping the music from my computer to watching DVDs, Blu-Ray and streaming movies/TV, I have absolutely no complaints.Oddly enough, the remote is very intuitive for me. I haven't tried to get the TV and player to accept the remote yet but at this point, it isn't much of an issue. I went from having four remotes to three and hopefully it will be just the main Yamaha remote with the occasional need to use the other two. Bad remotes net a lower rating from me and this has a decent remote that seems to have been researched and well thought out.I don't listen to the radio at home, but Pandora and my MP3s via the computer sound as good as can be. I am able to convert 2 channel music (which seems to be the case for most MP3 and other audio) to what Yamaha calls "5 Channel Enhancer" so you get a full music experience. Coming from a 2 channel system, it's pretty cool! I don't need to use the various sound field presets, though if you like to have interesting ways to listen to your music, those pre-sets are available (Vienna Music Hall, Roxy Theatre, etc). I listen to a variety of music - most everything except rap and hip-hop and all of it sounds great. The surround sound for movies and even TV is great. Late nights, though, I keep it at the "5ch Enhancer" setting in order to keep the volume at a respectable level so as not to annoy my neighbors. It's kind of fun to hear the movies with the various surround sound pre-sets though when I do have it in surround mode, I typically keep it at the "Standard" surround setting.I don't have cable and haven't since 1995 (on purpose) so I can't say how well it works with a cable or satellite box but it has more than enough ports to connect external devices and then some. Over-the-air television can be broadcast in 5.1 (depending on the program) and it sounds very good. Being able to combine a fully loaded receiver without other components (amp, equalizer, etc) is also a bonus for those not needing ultra loud and pure sound and for those whose space is limited. It's a great value in my opinion. If you want to plop $1200+ on a system, by all means go for it but if your needs are simple, your budget is constrained and you're not looking to create a serious home theater/music listening room, it will suit many people's needs.BTW, those that are looking for a home theater with a Blu-Ray/DVD and streaming are not going to get that with this system. This Yamaha system is strictly for sound which I think is the right way to do a home theater, even on a tight budget. This gives you more options and as your TV and other video needs change, this system will stand alone and I suspect will serve for many years. Basic audio hasn't changed in 30 years except in the realm of added channels (2.1, 5.1, 7.1) and digital input/output. Video seems to be changing at a rapid rate and perhaps has leveled out for now, but a system like this will provide a host of options, I think, that many home theater systems that are video based can't offer.EDIT: Feb 08, 2012 I still stand behind this system as an entry level/budget system for quality and sound. No complaints whatsoever and as far as stereo equipment goes, this has been a great investment for my needs. I still haven't figured out how to get my Sony products to accept the remote but I really haven't tried after I read on a Sony support forum that the two don't marry well on Sony's end. Which is fine, there are options on the TV remote that I will not be able to get on the Yamaha remote so it's not a bother at all. I would very much recommend this to anyone looking for a system that doesn't cost a ton of money and isn't looking for a full theater room system.

5Great Home Surround System!!!
By Vasileios Kalogirou
I have long been looking for a surround system around this range and decided to go with itsince its previous model the 393BL had one of the best reviews in the mark for its price range.I have never owned a surround system before, but I have installed it for several of my friends in the past. I have to say though that even for an amateur though the instructions provided are self explanatory.I also decided to mount all 5 speakers on the wall and installed the wires through the attic by droping the wires through the wall. It can be a painful process but well worth it in my personal opinion. If you were to have it installed like I did though, I would highly recommend spending an extra buck to get a better wire than the one that the system comes with.In my case for a 16x 16 family room I had to use about 120 feet of 16 gauge wire with extra seal protection. I would recommend a 14 gauge if your speakers will be more than 30 feet away from the receiver. Some sellers will recommend a CL2 or CL3 wire, but I ended up using the 16 gauge monster XP that I found better deal on and the performance of the sound rocks. No hickups super crystal clarity for the ability of the speakers. Easy to hear the highs, the lows and the bass.Overall I am extremely happy with the sound and the performance of this system. I cannot strech enough though how important it is to use good wires, especially if you were to ever upgrade your speakers to some more expensive ones. Believe me you do not want to go through the wire installation more than once for the same room.Personally I am not a sound maniac, but I love quality and professional performance and this system definetely meets my requirements. The receiver had enough inputs for my PS3, the Wii, my HD cable box, the VCR (wife still wants to keep it) and the iPod Dock, yet there is still room for more devices!!!If you are looking for a system at this price range do not think twice about it like I did. I live to overanalyze and do my homework before and type of purchase and I am in love with it already!!! Great job Yamaha, always had faith in you.

5Amazing Home Theater
By Ostriches
If you're looking for a great home theater system at an affordable price this is it. I have had no problems passing through all of my 3D content to my TV from this home theater system. There is a ton of control for the audio and even offers automatic and manual lip syncing. If you're an audio/video nut and you notice lips being off from audio by only the slightest bit then this is the home theater system for you. The active subwoofer is outstanding for its size. Overall, the whole home theater system is a great value and everything you'd expect. Everything you see on the amazon page for this home theater is true as far as specifications.
