Onkyo ABX-N300 Wireless Music System

Product Description

The ABX-N300 is just another stylish iPod/iPhone audio system, right? Wrong. It's so much more than that. Sure, the sleek, sliding aluminum top-panel conceals a dock for iPod/iPhone. But beneath that, you'll find advanced wireless audio functionality supported by impeccable Onkyo audio engineering. The system's Wi-Fi capability lets you play internet radio or stream audio from a PC or media server on your home network. The ABX-N300 is also compatible with AirPlay. Whatever you're listening to on your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad can be sent to the ABX-N300 wirelessly and given a serious boost in power and fidelity. You can even incorporate iTunes from your Mac or Windows PC and control playback using a remote app on your hand-held Apple device. If that wasn't enough, the ABX-N300 also plays nice with Rocketboost devices, further expanding the wireless playback possibilities. Say goodbye to cables. Wireless audio is here to stay.

3Gorgeous Design but ....
By Zulma
The Onkyo ABX-N300 Wireless Music System is gorgeous in design. Beautifully black sleek finish with a silver sliding dock cover that turns off and hides the iPod/iPhone dock and touch screen controls. It comes with a remote control which I had to use to connect to my network. It took several tries before I could connect to my password protected network. I knew I was entering the correct password, but it just would not take. I was really disappointed that Onkyo does not offer an app to download to connect from your IOs device directly. EVen though it has an external antenna, airplay constantly dropped in and out.The sound is rich and deep, and yes it can get loud. Why do I give it a 3 star- rating? They just released this and it is not compatible with the iPhone 5 or the 2012 iPods. It will only work with 30 pin connector dock IOs devices. I have the iPhone 5 and I am waiting for shipment of my adapter since it is on back order until mid December 2012. Onkyo could of at least included an adapter knowing Apple was going to release the new versions in the Fall.Honestly, I believe this WiFi speaker has more cons than pros. Lack of app to control on IOS devices, connectivity issues and no adapter for new 8 pin docking for iPhone and iPod devices.

3Elegant Design. Mediocre Sound Quality. Works With iPhone 5 (and Most Any iOS Device)
By P. Colin McGraw
I had high hopes for this speaker, since Onkyo A/V receivers have a rock solid reputation, but the ABX-N300 ended up being a mix of cool looking industrial design but so-so sound. The speaker looks like it's floating on its metal base, hovering is space, and it curves toward the base in a way that the pictures don't do justice. The top is one sleek piece of black plastic with touch-sensitive areas that light up with blue LED "buttons" that fade away when not in use. The top metal piece slides to the side to reveal a 30-pin Apple dock, but you'll keep it closed and just use AirPlay if you're like me. The whole effect is that the ABX-N300 looks elegant and clean (even if the external antenna is SO early 2000s).As for the sound, well... it's okay, but probably on the bottom end of most of the AirPlay speakers I've used. The clarity isn't phenomenal and the bass doesn't pound like some other speakers, and the biggest problem is that it distorts heavily at high volume. If you're just listening to music in your bedroom it probably won't matter, but the speaker won't cut it overriding the din of a party. That said it IS compatible with iPhone 5 via AirPlay (which I don't think is clear from other reviews), though AirPlay still isn't the most reliable of technologies, which isn't this speaker's fault. In summary, this is one of the better looking AirPlay speakers around, but not the best sounding one at this price point. Get it if you like the design, otherwise, consider a few more options in your shopping.

5Great speakers for iPod
By D. Vance
This is an excellent speaker dock. I used it with my iPod touch and it worked great. It can get pretty loud if that's your thing. I also used an auxiliary cable (Not included) to connect it to my laptop and watch The Amazing Spider-man. The sound quality was great. One of the great things about this dock, that sets it apart from others, is how easy it is to connect to the internet. Some of the docks I've worked with required you to download an app,or they only worked with certain types of internet connections. This dock's screen shows everything clearly. The instructions make everything a breeze. It may take a little while to input your code if your wifi is locked, because of the way you change keys with the arrow button. All in all, an excellent speaker and dock.

3Decent but missing the 'wow'
By E. Adams
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R5URD0NM4EURL On paper this system should rock my world. In reality, like most items it has pros and cons. This is an early (one day review), but the system lacks a certain dynamic range. During Dolby D scenes from Private Ryan and Matrix, the quality was serviceable but not awe inspiring. Part of the reason is the output on the bar is only 20 watts. Also, the very small drivers lack omph. However, I did expect better spatial effects on the material (bullets and explosion), did not hear a lot. I may return it later if no improvement after break-in.This may be a system for a den TV with a game system.Pros:- very nice and small form factor (fits on top of the plasma)- subwoofer is wireless and very good (also small in size)- control panel is smallCons:- low output wattage- dynamic range is limited- surround effects average- price point $150 higher than it should be- flimsy build quality

5Best Bang for your Buck!
By D. Choi
I am an experience AV and tech person. I had Sunfire, Sony, NAD, even Macintosh. But as I got older I notice that technology has change and sound hasn't. Speakers sound the same and I am sticking with my Paradigms. My last receiver was an Onkyo great price for what it offered. I like new technology and I am early adopter. It's an expensive taste and now that i am older i will slow down on the latest and greatest. I have friends that spent over $5000 for their receiver and i cant tell the difference. The internet market has changed the way people buy and now i am here writing my first review. I explain a little bit about myself so you can understand where the review and point of view is coming from. I am also a CFO so i understand value. There is nothing negative about this receiver, I highly recommend getting it. If you are smart you can get this $1000 receiver for $680 on the internet. I have the iPad and downloaded the iphone app from Pioneer and works great. The reason I picked this unit is that I do own a 3D TV - Samsung PN58C7000 and BDP6900 3D Blueray player. So I wanted to run all my cables through a 1.4A HDMI receiver. This receiver is feature rich. Now there are several units out there by Sony, Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, and Pioneer. I picked Pioneer unit because they didn't charge another $100 for a docking station for an iPod and you can do so much with this unit.I live in an apt and therefore the power is adequate at 120Watts per channel. I feel it should be a little heavier but if I wanted that i would have gotten the next model up the SC model with the "D" rated amplifier. But i didn't need that. This unit sounds very clean no hissing noise. Switching between HDMI input is a little slow. I turned off the automated pass through feature that can cause some issues with Samsung Product. I always turn on my Receiver because the sound from the TV is terrible. My setup is still 5.1 but then again i live in apt in nyc so i don't need 7.1. onkyo offer 9.2 again overkill. The unit has Ethernet connection and i can stream music but the internet radio choices are terrible, i will just use Pandora on my Blueray player instead. Ethernet connection will be good if Pioneer does an software upgrade on the receiver. I haven't tested the DLNA capabilities but i do have DLNA storage unit one by netgear called Stora.I wish this unit has a PC input like the onkyo but it does not and i do not like the way HDMI from my mac looks on the Samsung Screen either so it doesn't matter. VGA from MAC to TV is just fine with me 720p.What i like most about this receiver is the surround settings this is a THX receiver and it has many surround sound options more than onkyo or sunfire or any receiver I have played with. Options are great, remote control is easy to use. I have TIVO thru RCN so it can do 1080p. I programmed the Logitech Harmony remote to follow Pioneer VSX-1120 the non-elite version which works great. The VSX-1120 is not much less in price so why pick the VSX-33 Elite version. Build quality is better especially on the front face of the receiver, i believe it is made of aluminum. It's heavier that means the heat sink for the amp is better for cooling and power control, Amber glow, more power, better remote, more inputs, THX, etc. There are a lot of little details i notice that warrant the extra price, but more importantly the ability to expand. You can assign the This receiver is future proof, it has an additional HDMI out in case i want to add a projector. I figure best street price for the VSX-1020 which is below the VSX-1120 is around $449-$499 so the best difference is $180?? to me that is a amazing deal. The GUI interface on setting up the system is cleaner and better than most receiver. Another big advantage is the Video upconversion which is better than the VSX-32, VSX-31, VSX-1020, VSX-1120, Onkyo SR608 to 808, Denon new models etc. I checked them all out. But i don't care about this feature because everything is passthrough at 1080p for my system.I hope this info helps, shop around carefully someone is selling this unit for under $700 including tax and shipping. I am highly impressed with this and recommend it for it's features. It can do bi-amping and other things which i was not able to test. I am probably missing alot here on what else the unit can do but to me this is alot of stuff already plus it is 3-zone capable.

5Wonderful receiver for the money!
By Michael P. Wadden
This is a great receiver for what I paid. I originally bought a YAMAHA and I spent two weeks tweaking the sound and failed to get rid of that cheap "boomy" bass. Not to mention the Yamaha lacked any "low mid-range" presence/quality. So I returned the Yamaha product and coincidentally my parents gave me an old vintage Pioneer Progression IV component stereo system they bought 25-30 years ago...back in the true hi-fi war days. To my delight it sounded so good that I decided to try a Pioneer receiver and purchased the VSX-33. This unit made my Polk Audio TSI 300s come alive...and with the VSX-33 I was able to bi-amp them. I'm not really sure if the bi-amping made a difference because I hooked it up that way from day one.....and was so astounded at the clarity of the sound versus the Yamaha RX-V567 that I didn't want to change a damn thing. (And I was so irritated with the Yamaha I tried everything you could imagine)I did some research regarding the specifications between the two to find that the Yamaha receiver can have as much as 10% total harmonic distortion at full power (which is clearly identifiable to the human ear). Where as this Pioneer unit only reaches .08% at full power...and its commonly accepted that the human ear cannot detect distortion below 1%. So yes, the unit has incredible sound...I never have attempted turning it up all the way as I'm pretty confident its powerful enough to either cause permanent hearing loss (in my small room) or speaker damage. I'm not looking to shake the neighbors house although I know it can.On a side note I also use this with a Velodyne Minivee (IN MY OPINION, sealed subs are the way to go for a more accurate, musical bass that isn't BOOMy) and the auto-calibration microphone that comes with the VSX-33 tuned the frequencies between my 5 polk speakers and the velodyne so that you really aren't distracted by any single speaker being overly loud or powerful. The bass frequencies blend perfectly with the towers and surrounds. You just feel like you're in the room the music or movie was recorded in. I guess what I'm saying is that it sounds balanced...not too much treble...not too much bass....you get my drift. "Too much of anything is never a good thing"This unit is loaded. Free app for my iPhone/iPad to control it wireless (the app could be better though). iPod adapter included (unlike most competitors that nickel and dime you for everything). 3 zones, 2 hdmi. GUI interface, 9.1 surround. And a well written and detailed manual (Do not expect it to be written like "Microsoft Windows for Dummies"....if you are buying a $700 receiver that is loaded then don't knock it for being 'complicated'....educate yourself. As an informed consumer of electronics I found the manual to be pretty clear and Pioneer does try to explain the details of possible scenarios at the bottom of almost every page in the footnotes. The things they thought to include showed me someone put some real thought into it.One small gripe...and almost negligible because the sound is so superior I will give them this compromise (i.e. YOU CANT HAVE IT ALL)......is that if you choose bi-amp setup...you are restricted to 5.1 sound and from what I can figure...no amplified sound to zone 2/3. There are only 9 speaker terminals...so with bi-amp 5.1 I've used 7 but am not using the last two. Still not sure if theres a way to enable those unused terminals to play 2 channel sound, for lets say, my in-ceiling speakers around the house. But I mean you have to be realistic. Asking one amplifier to be your everything isn't going necessarily provide you enough power or quality sound. Adjust your expectations accordingly.Highly recommended. Would buy again in a heart beat.

5Great Receiver/Very Easy Set-up
By Telecommiter
This is a great product, and set-up is easy if you are only little bit technical. The sound and picture (HDMI passes through the receiver) are great. The other cool features are tons of HDMI inputs and 2 HDMI outputs. Also, you can feed anything in, S-Video, Composite or Component and it will upconvert and push it out to the TV. That really cut down on the mess of cables. The receiver detects which component is running and automatically turns on. This is a great receiver and you will not be disappointed.

5Perfect for my needs
By Patricia A., Peterson
I have had a RCA system similiar to this. The tape deck stopped working and wrecked the tapes I had in there. Since it was a few years old, I chalked it up to "worn out". Purchased a second RCA unit and this one broke within the year. The CD's would not play. So, said to myself, you get what you pay for and I ordered this Sharp and I am as happy as "hair on a frog"! I am no music perfectionist, I just wanted something to play my oldies that I have on tapes and cd's and a radio that I might use.Have had this system for couple of days and so far, so good. Everything sounds great and even better, everything works!! I purchased this as a gift to myself on my 66th birthday and am thrilled with it.Update....Have had this for a little over a month and have run into a glitch that was not mentioned in the advertisement. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN OUTSIDE ANTENNA TO CONNECT IT TO. I cannot keep any non stereo station on for more than 10 minutes. Shuts the whole system down. After several conversations with techs at Sharp, they narrowed it down to need more power from an outdoor antenna. Now, in the world today, with satellite dishes and cable, who in the world still have an antenna connection?? I could have spent $69 for an RCA unit that at least had a radio that stayed on but instead, spent way over $200 for this piece of useless equipment. I am NOT HAPPY!!!!!

3Good, but not great
By Nino Deprophetis
Sound is good - bass and treble similar to other sets I have had in the past. It would have cost the company nothing to make the speaker wires two feet longer. As such one cannot place the speakers more than several inches from the main unit. Splicing new wire onto the speaker wires is easy enough, but I shouldn't have to do this. It cost $299, but the only difference I have found so far from the $177 unit is that it has jacks for headphones. For the price the cassette player should also record. For my location, the wire that serves as an FM antenna works fine. The tiny remote is hard to read and it is too easy to push the wrong buttons. I can only work it when a strong light is on it and I have to look close to see what I am doing. Yet , this seems to be the best set available. 20 years ago I bought several sets by different brands that were wonderful with great sound, full size remotes, cassette recorders, etc for only $200. Units such as these seem to be unavailable now. This unit is very lightweight and seems cheesy in comparison. but so far it works well. I guess the times are a changin'

5HDMI Pass through works, some tech support headaches
By mcingram
I read the two negative reviews with apprehension when I bought this product. However, I took the advice of an amazon supervisor and gave it a shot. HDMI pass through works great on audio and video, even though the instructions in the manual are confusing by showing other configurations. I recommend hooking up all hdmi cables from the quick set-up sheet and ignore other configurations in the manual. Also, I did not perform the speaker callibration.Set up was more difficult because I use an A/B configuration. My indoor speakers run on A, then I switch off the front indoor and switch on my outdoor speakers using front B. Support from Sony was not the best and I had to call back several times. Tech support associates assumed everything was ready, repeating the company line about automatic detection but that's not entirely accurate. Here's the scoop, Sony sets these receivers up for basic home theater use and specialized options, like A/B, will likely require amp menu changes. Also, older equipment like tv's etc may require changes and/or loss of function like the theater button (which is not a big deal for me because I like to manually choose my sound using sound field on the remote). I just don't understand why A/B isn't turned on automatically at the factory, or why they didn't make A/B turn on automatically if speakers were attached to the B channel, now that would be auto detection! Here's the deal if you are running A/B configuration you need to use the amp menu button on your remote, select speaker pattern, using up and down in the center controls of remote and choose 3/2.1 plus the middle bullseye for enter. Now SB assign is no longer grayed out and you can turn on B, also under the amp menu speaker option. I read a review on a different Sony receiver that said basically Sony turns off a lot of options, so the user has to manually turn these on and I completely agree with that assessment, plus I would add that Sony does not do a good job of outlining this in the instructions. That's why you shouldn't get frustrated, just call support early and multiple times if you don't feel like you are getting the right answer. Sometimes I had to reference the page of the directions, state clearly the function I wanted to perform and not accept their pat answer which is use the sound field button, or automatic detection. Neither of those things work if you have to turn on/adjust speaker options and/or adjust other devices like tv and dvd player.Overall, the instructions were very confusing and tech support associates were at times impatient and/or condescending. It has great sound, although sound effects sometimes drown out the center channel speaker. You must use at least the front and center speakers to hear words in movies, plus it automatically turns off your tv volume. It sort of takes control over your tv which is convenient but doesn't allow for any manual overrides. So if you want to use your tv for the center channel, or to boost the sound of the spoken words in a movie, no dice. Before I was using a yamaha and it was manual enough to use the tv for the center channel speaker. Also, the yamaha has just a little better sound quality but I am splitting hairs. What makes this a better product is that it works/plays better with other devices, no quirks or freezing up, plus remote codes are a snap. There are a lot more bells and whistles but you will probably need to ask support for help with any configuration beyond home theater. Overall, a pretty good product for the price. The positives more than outweigh the negatives.Hint1: MULTI ST works great for music (basically plays left & right stereo out of all speakers.)Hint2: Purchase a special cord with a left and right rca output on one end and an mp3 jack on the other, usually sells for $5-10. Hook up the rca cord ends to the front of the receiver and the other goes into where the headphones plug into the mp3 player. Choose video2 on your receiver remote and turn up your mp3 player to full volume, just change the volume from your receiver, not mp3. Now enjoy all your mp3 player's music throughout the house!

4Assigning HDMI inputs
By M. A. Malenfant
I haven't seen this in the comments, so I thought I'd pass this on. I was looking forward to eliminating all the component, coax, and fiber cables and going with HDMI from my Tivo HD and a Sony Blu-Ray player. I can do this as long as I select HDMI 1 -3.However if I want to use the Assign feature to assign HDMI1 to the BD input or HDMI3 to the SAT input, only the video will be switched not the audio. In order to get the audio, you have to run a coax cable from the Blu-ray player and a fiber cable from Tivo to the BD and Sat inputs. A note on Sony's website confirms this. The manual is confusing because on page 25 it states: "Be sure to change the initial setting of the HDMI 1-3 input button on the remote so that you can use the button to control your components." Later it says that the HDMI buttons cannot be changed.Other than not being able to pass HDMI audio through the BD and SAT assignments, the amp works fine.Note: If you use a Tivo HD with this amp, the code for on/off, mute, and volume is 1176 which is not listed as part of the Sony remote codes on Tivo.

4Great receiver, great price (With 3 updates)
By NGTO1
Well, not quite DOA. I was looking for an entry level 7.1 system and normally avoid Sony products like the plague. Well, this receiver had decent power at 105w X7, had DD+, DD5.1, DD-EX, DTS-HD, DTS, DTS-ES 6.1 matrix and discrete, DD PLII, PLZ, PLX, 3 HDMI inputs, and 3D support. Basically it had mostly every feature you could need and all the decoders you could ever want at 199.99. When comparing this to the 810 and Onkyo's entry level 7.1 receiver it was clear this one was the one to go with. I read all the reviews there were only a couple bad ones and the complaints seemed to be based around people not being able to plug in analog cables and output their signals through HDMI (which I have no use for that feature which by the way is on the Sony 810).I received the receiver, hooked up my speakers but because I forgot to label the speaker wire for the rear channels I had to use the test tone to figure out if they were connected right and if not how I needed to switch them to make sure they were set up right. The test tone worked so I turned off the receiver, re-wired the speakers, turned the receiver back on then the test tone wouldn't work. The manual said that if the test tone didn't work then either the wiring wasn't secure or the neg/pos were crossed. This receiver has tiny speaker inputs so if you have even semi-big gauge wire it won't fit cleanly. I rewired my speaker cables, I re-stripped them thinking they just needed to be fresh, I electric-taped anywhere on the cable that had exposed wire. I did an immaculate job on the wiring, let the receiver sit over night unplugged thinking it needed to reset, and also did the system reset thinking maybe it was in protect mode (which the receiver's display never said it was). It still wouldn't work. After running through hours of tests, plugging in different HDMI sources, unplugging certain speaker wire, etc. and never getting a test-tone or sound at all I called Sony and they ran me through the steps I had already ran through myself. They told me I needed to take the receiver to the nearest servicing center to get it repaired free-of-charge. I called the servicing center and they said companies stopped doing repairs on audio receivers years ago and do exchanges instead. He himself said they hadn't worked on receivers that weren't top-of-the-line for 5 years. I called Sony back and they looked up another service center and there were none. So they told me to ship it to them at my cost (they would cover the shipping back) and I would get it in two weeks. I said no thanks; I'll just exchange it for a new one.I called electronics expo who was great and they paid for shipping both ways ala Microsoft and the 3RROD. They emailed me a shipping label that day. Shipping to them was ground and it took a week to get there (west coast to east cost) and they are 2-day shipping it back either today or tomorrow.I'll update my review when I get the replacement either Friday or Monday.Update #1 (Feb 19 2011)So I received my replacement receiver yesterday. Hooking it up was a breeze, set up took a little longer (more fine-tuning than anything). The speaker inputs on back of receiver are a little small (other than the front channels) so if you have large gauge wire you'll have a hard time getting it in cleanly. My biggest problem with this receiver is the cumbersome set-up menus. Turns out the receiver I sent back originally probably wasn't actually broken, it was just user error (instructions are written confusing in some areas). I consider myself a techy near-audiophile so for me to mess up and not understand how to turn on the test tone is pretty embarrassing. The only other problem I have with the receiver is the sound settings for surround sound. I have a 7.1 set-up but the receiver according to the manual only has Dolby Pro Logic IIx (PLIIx) for converting a 5.1 movie into a 7.1 so if you want to get sound out of all 4 surround speakers you HAVE to use PLIIx. The other surround modes, Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.), C.ST.EX (Cinema Studio EX) A, B, and C, V.M. DIM (V. Multi Dimension), PLII MV (Pro Logic II Movie), and NEO6 CIN (Neo:6 Cinema) don't mention anywhere that they will provide you with sound to all 8 of your speakers. Only PLIIx states it'll provide you with sound to all 8 speakers. After some investigating it turns out that the C.ST.EX (A, B, and C) will give you sound to your surround back speakers as will A.F.D.- A.F.D. from what I believe gives you the sound straight from the disc without adding any pre-programmed sound fields but what confuses me is how the surround back speakers are getting sound when what is being sent to the receiver is only 5.1. It seems that either the receiver "fakes" 7.1 with any 5.1 signal it gets regardless of the sound mode you've selected (barring 2 channel stereo of course) or it just sends the same signal the 2 side speakers get to the back speakers. Of course this is nearly impossible to test so I'm now trying to decide which is better, PLIIx which claims to up convert 5.1 to "discrete" 7.1 surround or just go with either A.F.D. or C.ST.EX A,B,C that claims nowhere that'll up convert 5.1 to 7.1 even though sound does come out of all 8 speakers. If the Bluray movie you're watching is encoded in true 7.1 DTS HD Master Audio the receiver auto switches to that mode and cancels any pre-programmed sound field you may have turned on so you're getting true 7.1. If only more movies were encoded in 7.1...The sound is great, the auto calibration seemed to work fine but for my own personal preference I like to hear the surround speakers a little more than the default so I had to fine-tune the surround speakers to the volume I prefer.Other than the cumbersome menu system and confusing sound mode descriptions I'd definitely recommend this receiver to anyone patient enough to learn the ins & outs of it.Edit #2:So after some research with the sound fields, it turns out the PLIIx MV (Pro Logic IIx movie) is the best way to go to watch 5.1 movies in 7.1. I used the cinema studio EX mode and A.F.D (auto format) for a while watching a 5.1 movie on BD, and while I did hear sounds out of the surround back left and right channels, it was really quite even after turning the back surround channels all the way up to 10. Once I switched the sound mode to PLIIx MV the back surround channels were far more distinct, separated, and easier to hear. It all around sounds better using PLIIx MV for 5.1 movies with a 7.1 speaker set-up than it does using the other modes. Even the side surround channels sounded better.Edit #3:One thing to note, after using the receiver for a couple weeks, it turns out that sometimes it switches amp mode from just amp to "TV/AMP" in the menu settings. I don't know what causes it, but it's a bit annoying. The other thing, with the HDMI-CEC thing when you try to turn the volume up on your TV when the receiver is set to "AMP" instead of "TV/AMP" in the audio output menu your TV remote will actually turn your receiver volume up instead and a HUD on your TV will display the current volume (inaccurately) that your receiver is at. It only works (poorly) sometimes. At this point I'm just nick-picking because these are smile gripes and they're not features I really need nor was expecting. But I thought I'd point it out anyway. If you have this receiver, have a 7.1 speaker set-up, and are watching a 5.1 source I would definitely recommend using PLIIx MV to watch your movies. If the movie is in 7.1 it will default to a discrete 7.1 mode. Here is a list of BD movies that support 7.1 discrete audio. [...]Pros- Great sound, many options, very customizable.Cons- Confusing menu system, confusing sound field descriptions, confusing manual.

5Outstanding Receiver
By Felipe
After spending weeks of researching A/V receivers, I chose the AVR-590 to replace my old, non-HDMI Sony receiver. I had a 5.1 setup and didn't need anything fancy, but I didn't want something mediocre either. On paper, this model had all the features I needed (HDMI switching and automatic speaker setup) for a very reasonable price. This is my first Denon receiver, and I have been using for over a month.Setup - I consider myself technically inclined, so when I read the manual for the first time, it wasn't too complicated. However it's layout is not very intuitive, so I can see where people who are technically challenged may have issues with the Denon manual. I went to the BatPig Web site to download instructions, just in case I had a brain fart reading the manual...I found that both the BatPig instructions and the Denon manual complimented each other well, so setup ended up being pretty easy. You have the option of setting up the receiver with the speakers either manually or automatically. Being naturally lazy, I opted for automatic (Audyssey) setup using the included microphone. When doing automatic setup, be sure to use the on-screen menu and definitely test all 6 sound locations to get an accurate audio "sweet spot".Sound - Wow. This is where going through the setup pays off. Whether you're watching something with Dolby Digital/DTS encoding or just listening to music, the sound is very full and crisp. You have several sound field settings to chose from, as well as manual volume adjustment to suit your listening tastes. I use HDMI for the HD and Blu-Ray sources and Digital Optical for DVD sources. Although the speaker system I have in place is modest, it handles all audio sources beautifully. Listening to music or sounds from TV/movies is an absolute treat to the ears with this receiver.Video - Excellent. With the AVR-590, I used its HDMI out for video from DirecTV and Blu-Ray sources. I hooked up Component video for my DVD changer, because it is a pre-HDMI device. The receiver uses the most current HDMI standard (1.3a), and picture on my 120Hz LCD from both outputs is vivid and sharp, with no ghost images or signal loss at all. Watching from any video source is pure (pardon the pun) eye-candy.Performance - Excellent. One evening, I did my best couch potato imitation and watched a bit of DirecTV HD & a couple of Blu-Ray movies for nearly 8 hours straight. Afterward, I checked the receiver to see if it was getting hot, and surprisingly there was hardly any heat coming from it. Dynamic EQ seems to work, as I have not noticed any of those annoying commercials that scare the bejeezus out of me when watching TV programming. I definitely feel like I'm in a theater when watching anything on this system.Overall - Excellent. Even with decent speakers and a good LCD, plugging in a new receiver really makes a difference...I now find myself losing track of time while listening to vibrant sound and watching brilliant video! If you have under $400 to spend on a quality 5.1 receiver, this is it. Don't mind what others have said about setup issues, because it really isn't that difficult to set up. For the features that it offers at its price range and the performance you get in return, I do feel you get the best "bang for your buck".

5All you could ever want at this price point!
By Drew J. Pearson
Well, I finally decided to upgrade my great-sounding but HDMI-less Marantz receiver to something that would play nice with my PS3 and Wii and upconverting Oppo player. I wanted this, but I did not have a fortune to spend.I checked out the 'budget' receivers from Yamaha, Harman/Kardon, Onkyo, Pioneer, and even refurbished Marantz. I did weeks of research; comparing spec sheets repeatedly, always price shopping, comparing each one's auto speaker setup, and build quality(I was spoiled by the Marantz). Also, I ideally wanted to run just one cable to my projector(it looks ungodly with wires running across the room). What made me choose the Denon? Easy. I only have a 5.1 setup (no need for two extra amps), the Audyssey MultEQ is superior to what the other brands (except Pioneer) can offer at this price, the receiver is heavier and feels less 'flimsy' than the others (the Onkyo was also fine), decodes all of the latest HDMI audio codecs, and I only have one HDMI cable running to my projector! And all for a great price! In the budget receiver world, I do not think this has any peers right now. You won't regret purchasing one!

5"Budget" Reciever
By Johnny Friday
The only thing budget about this receiver is its price. There are more than enough inputs for me(and well more than enough settings than I will ever use). This receiver makes use of the latest encodings found on blurays(uncompressed FTW).I have paired mine with 2X cerwin-vega re30s, 2x sony ssf-6000s, a celestion 35c, and a bic America f12. (Ill be replacing the center soon as he is the low man on the totem pole)The remote is less complicated than the other higher end Denons, making it more functional and much less complicated. I didn't really use the manual much, and this is my first true dedicated receiver. Audessy did a fantastic job of setting up and matching speaker volumes. Although I have a franken 5.1, it blends beautifully for both movies and 2.1 for music. (The autovolume makes tv commercials much less glaring, very nice feature)Wire all of your speakers, write down where all of your inputs went, plug in your mic and run audyessy... it really is that simple. Use the yellow input buttons to quickly select what you want to use as your source. This receiver has a true 75watts all channels driven, which is plenty to drive my speakers well beyond a comfortable level. In short, this receiver amazes me every time I turn it on. I would recommend it, and any other of this years denons to anyone who needs a great quality receiver. Buying the higher models will basically net you only a few more watts and 480p upscaling, despite this, I would have gotten the 990 if my budget had allowed. With this receiver, and quality budget speakers, you will absolutely blow away systems that cost much more.
