5Yamaha 3020
By Annihilator001
I would have to say the reciever is by far the best one I have ever owned. Setup literally took 5 mins, (of course all the cables and wires were already ran). I have a 5.2 setup with 4 reference speakers going (so yeah all 9 amps being used) and the sound quality rivals the sound you would expect from going to a nice movie theater. I the one thing I noticed though is the auto setup likes to recreate a super realistic sound, meaning not much base in the mix. So I end up turning down my subs about 1/4 turn during the setup phase and then turn them back to were I like them, and it sounds great. The navigation of the menu is really easy. I cant even come close to telling you how many futures the reciever has... probably more than I will ever use. I like the Idea of it being UltraHD (4K) capable for when the newer TVs come out on the market.I would recommend this reciever to anyone who wants to purchase a High Reciever.

5SOUND+VISION REVIEW
By E. Price
As the only A/V receiver -- a product category that's become increasingly commoditized -- to earn an Editor's Choice award in 2012, Yamaha's RX-A3020 had to jump through quite a few hoops. But since the RX-A3020 improves on its predecessor, the RX-A2010 -- the only A/V receiver to earn an Editor's Choice award in 2011-- in a number of areas, clearing those hoops wasn't difficult. With 9 channels rated at 150 wpc (2-channels driven) and the option to increase that count to 11 by adding an outboard amplifier, the RX-A3020 is designed for listeners who want to test the outer limits of surround-sound immersion. And with 22 highly adjustable DSP sound modes on tap, Yamaha gives you all the tools you'll need to do just that. Other features of note: 4K video pass-through and upconversion; "Silent Cinema" headphone surround processing; YPAO auto-setup/calibration and room EQ; detailed and fast-moving onscreen pop-ups and displays; 12 unique "Scene" memories to store important settings; and a full control app for tablets or smartphones. As for A/V quality, Daniel Kumin admired the Yamaha's "dramatically open, dynamic sound" and "impressive dynamic ease" with stereo music. Switching over to multichannel listening with height channels in the mix, he found it capable of "superb music surround" and endowed with enough power "to reach big-cinema levels" with no "limitations or transient squash." And while he lacked the means to test the Yamaha's 4K video features, he found the 1080p video conversion carried out by its well-regarded IDT HQV Vida processor to be without fault. The verdict? Excellent A/V features, combined with top-notch ergonomic design, put the RX-A3020 at the head of its class.yamaha.com

I love this receiver, does more than what I need it to, but it sounds amazing and the YPAO makes even a poorly set up room sound great.

5Yamaha YAS-101
By MB123
I just recently purchased the sony kdl55hx820 and needed a sound bar to make up for the lackluster sound produced by flat screens in general. My main requirements were: Full sound, aesthetically pleasing and smaller form factor since I haven't wall mounted my tv just yet.Since I wanted some bass I was looking at systems with a sub and decided the finalists for me were:Sony HT-CT150Sony HTCT550WPanasonic SC-HTB520Yamaha YAS-101Sony HT-CT150- Although a nice system I eliminated it because the sub was not wireless and you needed a clear sight line to it because the ir sensor is at the top of it, which makes hiding the sub more difficult.Sony HTCT550W- A superb system really. Also provides hdmi switching at a very reasonable price. The only thing I did not like was the extra piece of equipment (receiver unit) that I would have to stick into my tv stand and that the main speakerbar has no frills physically. uses ARC meaning, if your tv is capable, you can use a single hdmi cable for audio&video + it should turn unit on and off.Panasonic SC-HTB520- a very underrated system and by far the most beautiful of the units reviewed...main bar is gorgeous, plus thin. Issue for me was that the bar was slightly taller and I was worried it would block the ir signal for the tv. Also arc compatiblewhich brings me to the yas-101Yamaha YAS-101- listened to it in a store and it sounded terrible. no bass whatsoever but I decided to give it a try anyway. main reasons:1. i knew you can adjust the sub woofer level2. has the ir relay so even if it blocks the sight line of the tv it passes the signal on3. can learn power + vol + and - of your tv remote.4. very good looking unit, a bit deep but still gorgeous5. has the sub built inAfter looking at the different units in stores and such I said If the yamaha sounds halfway decent and I don't have extra equipment (receiver, sub) then it will be worth it. I know that you will be giving up some punch with this unit since it's a small sub built in but that was ok for me. I have a smaller living room and was willing to sacrifice punch for less wires and equipment.TOOK THE UNIT HOMEWhen I took it out of the box i was impressed with the piano black finish of the unit, really beautiful although of course will be a fingerprint magnet (but who will touch it?). I haven't wall mounted my tv yet so I placed the bar in front of the tv. It was a bit too high with the legs so I removed them and it was perfect height in front of my Sony KDL55HX820 which has a low profile. (the design of the unit, not completely flat, allows it to sit right over typical tv stands.)WiringMy tv outputs 5.1 so I just connected optical from the tv to the soundbar and plugged in the soundbar to power and was off and running.RemoteIt learned the power plus vol +- of my fios remote in about 2 minutes.Sound qualityReally impressed. Although I had to pretty much max out the sub level it hits pretty well considering I did not have to get a separate sub nor any extra equipment. Sound is full and you do feel some rumble. Voices are clear, mids beautiful and lows pretty impressive. Again I have a smaller space so I'm sure thats why the bass sounds so good. Now that it's programmed- turn on the tv, unit goes on. Turn off the tv, unit goes off. Success!only thing that bothers me a bit is the fact that since I have tv on external speakers, when I hit vol+- on the tv a little box comes up for a few seconds that says tv vol fixed. Not a big deal but just putting it out thereIf you have a larger space this probably isn't for you, if you are expecting real legit 7.1- this isn't for you.If you want to improve the sound coming from your flat screen and 1. don't want to break the bank and 2. dont want extra equipment or wires- I confidently say this is the unit for you.UPDATE: 5/17/12: Just something to note....the bar blocks my 3d sensor since the glasses need a clear view of the sensor in order to process the 3d image I can't watch in 3d until I mount my tv a few inches higher- yup thats right, I still haven't mounted my tv. :)Other than that the bar is fine, sound quality hasn't changed it's holding up just fine.

5Fantastic Product
By Don C.
First, my motivation for taking the time to write a review is that these Amazon product reviews have helped me so much in the past that I wanted to pay some of that back.More to the point, Yes, definitely buy this Yamaha Sound Bar if your needs are similar to mine.I love this thing because my new 46Inch LED Flat Screen had a great picture but really dull sound and I wanted to add better sound without a complicated set of gear, and this Yamaha Sound Bar immediately gave me bright clear quality sound in a simple one piece component that looks high end and fits nicely in front of my TV. You don't notice it.I gave it a full five stars because it worked great right out of the box, exceeded my expectations and I really got it set up within in 20 minutes, really. When I turned it on I sat there with a big smile on my face because of the quality sound as I channel surfed and played with the sound settings, how many times does that happen with a new piece of gear?Only two wires to deal with, the power cord to plug in and it came with the other one, an optical cable, so no running out to figure out what cable or cables to buy. You just plug in the optical cable to the audio out on the TV and into the back of the Yamaha. When you slide it out of the box, be careful grabbing it, as along the bottom of the unit two of the internal speaker compartments are cloth covered and you could accidentally poke your fingers through before you get it fully out of the box, unwrapped and can see them.Even though it sits in front of the base of my TV; it didn't block my TV remote's signals, as it has a setting to pass through and relay your remotes signal out of its back side. You can teach this Yamaha Sound Bar to respond to your TV's remote to turn the Yamaha on and off and adjust the volume, I haven't done that yet.The Voice Clear feature is worth it alone, no matter if my home's noisy A/C is on or if there is a lot of back ground noise in what I am watching; it makes dialog jump out to be clear and understandable. Now I can now walk out of the room and not miss what's being said on the TV Show. Also what I truly enjoy is that it automatically keeps the volume from increasing when the commercials come on.The Surround Sound feature is excellent and full sounding; it makes you feel like the characters and action are in the room with you. The Stereo setting is also is excellent, music on it sounds great with depth and warmth like on my high end audio car system.Remote is simple, settings and set up easy to use and the manual covered it all briefly but with enough to be user friendly for a normal person.I feel like I got good value for what I paid.

5Surprisingly rich sound
By Tbear
Got this to augment the sound coming from our 52" LCD TV, which has meager speakers. HD set top box and Blu-ray player connected to the Yamaha with optical toslink cables. For action movies the sound has good punch with the bass remaining tight and manages to fill all corners of a spacious open floor plan living room-kiitchen area. Shows with dialogue emphasis get the "voice" option and this works very well. Now, understand that this will not sound as good as a true home theater surround system consisting of a receiver/amplifier, 5 or 7 speakers and a subwoofer; but for a simple, elegant setup, the Yamaha performs admirably. Highly recommended.

5Wow, wow, wow - superb A/V receiver
By Marty-Z
This is my first Yamaha A/V receiver in over 8 years and I must say Yamaha have practically kocked it out of the park with the RX-A2020.First of all a bit about my setup: I'm running all in-wall/in-ceiling speakers with separate amplifiers - bypassing the amplification of the RX-A2020. The room is a very large 30x40 with 19ft ceilings - quite a bit of space to fill with sound!!! The previous A/V receiver running my setup was an Onkyo TX-NR709.The first thing you'll notice when you pull the RX-A2020 out of the box is its build quality which far exceeds the average A/V receiver in both finish and heft. The second thing you'll notice is Yamaha does not include a paper manual, just a simple quick-start sheet. The manual is on CD-Rom, so if you don't have an optical drive handy, dang Macbook air, you'll have to resort to downloading the manual from the Yamaha website. Downloading the manual is a somewhat tedious endeavor as you must register for an account with Yamaha. But hey who needs the manual - right??? Uh, I did. I'm a tech-savvy early adopter but the RX-A2020 includes so many settings and Yamaha-isims (proprietary Yamaha features) that you will be hard pressed to understand what all the settings do unless you read the manual. That said, you can simply plug in your components, plug in the YPAO Room EQ mic (included with the RX-A2020) set the mic in the sweet spot of your room and hit the auto button and let the RX-A2020 do its thing. The resulting audio and surround processing is nothing short of astonishing!!! Even my wife, who thinks her clock radio from 1996 sounds great, noticed an immediate difference and improvement in the sound quality when viewing movies and television. Compared to the Onkyo the tonal balance is vastly improved and there is much better and pronounced channel separation and seemingly smoother transitions between the channels. An added benefit, as compared to the Onkyo, is the Yamaha runs much, much, cooler in my enclosed custom A/V cabinet. This hopefully will contribute to longevity but time will tell. The iPhone app that Yamaha has developed is very slick and easy to use as long as you have the RX-A2020 connected via etherent cable to your network as there is no wireless built-in. Speaking of the iPhone, the slickest function that I find myself using all the time, despite a Sonos system in the same room, is the Airplay feature. The integration is super-slick as you never have to leave the iTunes interface on your iPhone - even if the RX-A2020 is turned off! Simply select the song you want to play as you normally would when listing to your iPhone/iPod/iPad, hit the funky box with an arrow button next to the volume slider pick the RX-A2020 and boom the RX-A2020 powers on, turns on my separate amplifiers, and fills the room with your selected song. The volume slider and the side volume buttons on your Phone/iPod/iPad control the volume on the RX-A2020.If I were to criticize Yamaha it would be for the on-screen menus which look somewhat lo-res and dated, but once you get things setup you'll really never have to revisit those. I can't comment as to the power of the built in amplification or the remote as I am not using either of those but the surround processing is simply phenomenal!!!Overall, highly recommended!

5All I can say is wow!
By Adrian Lund
This thing is a beast. The sound is awesome and the app controlled is super nice. I'm standing in my living room (zone 2) with a 15 yr old Bose AM5 speakers hooked up to the receiver in the basement and my daughter comes home from college. In 30 seconds she downloads the app and then I tell her to play her favorite song and hit the AirPlay button. We crank it so loud she is just speechless. For a moment, I was cool again. This is just zone 2. In my HT In the basement that i have been working on since Halloween, the A2020 is the heart and soul. I used 4 Bose bookshelf speakers for the surround and surround back, a Bose center channel, JBL L880 s for Rt and Lt, and a Polk SW505 for powered sub. Also the Yamaha 1020 bluray player and to top it off a Visio 65 led that I bought open box at Costco for 990. This system completely blows me away. I watched The Dark Knight on blue ray and it was better than the theatre ( free beer). I'm not going to tell you I'm an audiophile and I have bought a lot of junk in my life because I was just being cheap but this was money well spent. Also the firmware upgrade via network was a breeze. It will take me a long time to tweak this system but it will be a labor of love. The JBLs are pieces of art and I highly recommend. Instead of using the floor pins that ship with it, I built a entertainment shelf and drilled holes and bolted the speakers to the shelf beside the Visio using 5/16 cap screws with fender washers and jam nuts. It is pretty sweet and it gets them up off the floor away from pets, even with screen to help imaging and they will not budge.I wouldn't go into debt to own this unit but if you are fortunate enough to have the resources to build a system like this, it is a lot of fun. I'm very happy and hope it runs for a long time.Cons: I need to move my pc media files to fat32 drive as it can't access NTFS drives in my computer. Also the 2nd HDMI output is basically a clone of the first. Only the A3020 can direct an alternate video program to the second HDMI output. I did run a 50' mediabridge HDMI cord to an older 720p HDMI tv in my spare room and it looks great. The funniest part is that the subwoofer on the other side of the house provides plenty of bass for watching the show in both rooms! I wonder when my neighbors will say something? Maybe a move to the country is in order.

5I love this receiver
By hometheaterdudes
I have been a long time fan of denon but it was time for an upgrade. I went back and forth doing a lot of research and finally purchased teh Yamaha RX-A2020 and boy am I glad I did. I have it connected to a PS3. I had a little trouble at first because I did not have my PS3 set up correctly but after googling how to do that so I am now in Heaven. Movies sound and look incredible. I have not figured out everything but so far so good. I have a 7.1 Klipsch Reference Series set up and boy do the speakers sound great. I love it and am thrilled with the purchase.

5Unreal range from a tiny box
By C. Anderson
I just picked up this sub a few weeks ago and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. I am currently running def tech BP6 tower speakers, C/L/R 2002 center, and promonitor 800 rear speakers on a Denon AVR-1612 5.1. The supercube 4000 completely fills in the mid and low range even at half power.I tested the def tech pro sub 60, pro sub 800, pro sub 1000, and the supercube 2000. I was really impressed with the pro sub 1000 and SC 2000. Furthermore, the PS 1000 hit harder and the SC 2000 was much fuller. I wanted the best of both worlds and blindly (or deafly) ordered the SC 4000 based on the specs. As soon as it arrived I was surprised how small it was. It is also very heavy and quality made. My favorite feature has got to be the remote. I listen to a wide range of music and it's great to be able to fine tune everything from where I'm sitting. This sub is small and elegant so it blends into the room and does its job well. This sub it no different than any other in terms of placement. You still have to move it around your room until you find the sweet spot. Once you find that sweet spot look out, this thing hits hard. I'm still in awe a box this small can shake my whole house. It literally feels like it will pound through the floor and I haven't even taken it over half power. Of course this was under testing purposes and I tend to listen to extremely bass heavy music. Under normal conditions it can blend seamlessly with the rest of your system.I would give the supercube 4000 ten stars if I could. It is center piece of my home theater. If the price seems too much let me tell you it's well worth it however if I were on a budget I'd go for the prosub 1000. The supercube 2000 tries to do what the 4000 does but falls short. There is also a supercube 6000 which I can only assume is for listening to bass while you're out of state. So all-in-all from my long winded review, this is not just s subwoofer it's an investment.***UPDATE***So I've been living with this sub for about 9 months now. Some things have changed in my setup. I was using it upstairs while I finished my basement, the basement is done and my home theater is there in a 800 sq. ft. room. My receiver changed to a harman kardon avr 1565. This receiver is more fuller and bass dominate so the power is turned way down on both the sub and receiver. I seriously prefer my setup to some movie theaters. It's very impressive. No issues to report at all. The sub does not cut out and there is no chance for overheating since I barley use what it's capable of. All I can say is this is my favorite toy and I enjoy showing it off. If you're considering it, I can't recommend it enough.

5Makes my heart pound
By Semper Fi
I love audio equipment but like many audio fanatics I am on a budget. I work for the countries major electronic store so I get all audio equipment for half price, not including bose but i dont care because bose is a pice of crap anyway. Even at half price it was a strech for me to buy this, I actually left the store thinking i made a mistake purchasing a sub for what to me is alot of money for something i dont need. So I arrived home and I removed my cheap sub wich was only about six months old but i was not satisfied by its performance. I installed this brand new SC 4000 and played a song. I was speechless, i could not belive how my entire system sounded with this new sub. It almost made me tier I was so exited, happy and glad I got it. I isntantly forgot how bad i felt for having spent the money on it and frankly after using it all day I can honestly say I would actually pay the full price for this supercube 4000. With this sub my speakers are no longer being held back by lack of base and my system sounds completely different, and i can ajust on the fly when i change music genre with the remote control. Volume goes from 0 to 40 and you can turn the display off and if you ajust the volume while the display is off it will come on to show you the volume level and then go off after about 3 seconds, that i find to be a cool feature at night because the numbers wont distract you while watching a movie. Absolutely high quality attention to detail was is outstanding and it comes with two set of screw on mini cleets to raise it from the ground. One set for hard floor with rubber pads so it does not damage the floor and so that it wont move with vabration. The other set for carpeting that actually dring them selves into, the carpet so it wont move at all. The screen mesh that covers it is removabel so it can be washed if it gets dirty or dusty. Over all I love my new sub and I would buy it atfull price if i had to. Are there better subs out ther? Not really it would have to be a Mammoth of a box to produce the frequencies that this little box can do. It will make your house tremble. O one big suggestion, do get a good good good power center for your other electronics because one thing about this baby it sucks alot of power and will make your lights dim when it hits when the sub volume is high so it will generate electrical noise that will eventually cause damage to your tv if you dont have a power center that filters that out. Outstanding.

5SC4000 , THIS WOWED ME!!!!
By Stuart Babbit
I currently run a Yamaha RXa700, great receiver for the price and I have all polk audio in a 7.1 configuration, when I started to look for powered subwoofers, i thought I wanted something that was large and imposing, what i ended up with is something small and stealthy, took me a week to tweak this little sub in size ,but Large in sound, this is a dream for my system blends in so well, just when I thought a bass note shook me enough another one comes along in a different movie and then it blows me away again, the top volume of the sub is 40 I have this little magic box set on 15, trust me thats enough, If I feel a little brave I might hit it up at 20, and the remote that comes with it is very handy,so if you are a true couch potato then you are in heaven, remember movie volume is less than music volume, put this cube in a corner makes better bass, great value for this unit, at $799.00, they could charge $1500.00 I would still buy it because its worth more, thanks Def Tech for making a GREAT ITEM..

5Good receiver with lots of inputs and features
By E. Van
I recently upgraded from an Onkyo HT530 receiver to the TX-NR509 for its HDMI and some of the fancy extras (networking, USB playback, etc.)Some thoughts on the receiver:HDMI issues from last gen of Onkyo receivers?----------------Doing a little research before buying, I was worried that the HDMI handshake issues that popped up for the TX-SR508 and TX-SR608 owners would be present here, but so far so good. Currently using it with a PS3, no issues so far. Will definitely update this if I come across issues.Easy Setup----------------The old receiver didn't have the Audyssey EQ configuration, using it was interesting. The set up process ended up pretty darn accurate in terms of automatically configuring speaker distance and values I'd normally have to put in by hand on my old receiver. +1 for painless initial setup!Great On-screen display----------------The OSD is actually pretty clean and makes the menus easy to navigate. I'm not used to being able to configure so much without staring at the receiver's built-in display (which is actually pretty cool to look at). The OSD for network-based playback is a bit simple, but it gets the job done.Mediocre Network-capabilities (Fixed via new firmware!! See update below)----------------A large part of spending a little more for this model over others I was considering was the networking capabilities. It was very cool to have it connect online and download a firmware update. Hopefully this means there will be an improvement on the next part: the DLNA playback for the receiver. This is where I have the most trouble.I have PS3 Media Server set up on my home server and it diligently serves media to the PS3 via the gigabit network without problems. The TX-NR509 is able to see it and connect to it, but that's when the problems start. I haven't pinpointed the cause of it yet, but from what I've noticed, folders that contain "lots" of sub-folders or files (I'm just talking about over 20-30 here) cause the receiver to error out and force you to go up a directory/level and try again. Some directories only containing 1 file refused to open (I couldn't figure this one out). Letting it sit there and populate the contents of the folders didn't help either.I was hoping I could play music off the server without turning on the PS3 and television, so the DLNA problems I'm experiencing are a little discouraging. Luckily, it's possible that Onkyo can remedy this through a future firmware update. From Rodney's review, I tried the free Android app OnkyTroller on my phone to control the receiver. It does the job, but the app looks pretty ugly and seems somewhat limited in terms of functionality. Still, very cool idea. I noticed simply browsing through DLNA directories using my phone caused skips in music when playing from the network (too much network activity for the receiver to handle?).Additional thoughts-----------------The TX-NR509 only gets warm after hours of use (way cooler than my old HT530)-I love the 'Dynamic Volume' function of the receiver, it prevents opening theme songs of TV shows from blasting and helps us hear softer dialogue without fiddling with the remote-This receiver is pretty tall compared to the one it replaced, plan accordingly if space is limitedUpdate: January 2012----------------Onkyo has been pushing out several firmware updates since my review in May 2011. The small bugs in the DLNA network playback capabilities have been ironed out and I'm able to navigate through all directories on the server with no issue. That was my biggest issue with the receiver that made me give it 4/5 stars, so I've updated my rating as well.Lastly, I highly recommend grabbing the free, official Onkyo Remote app for Android. Not only can you push music from your device to the receiver, you can use it as a remote to visually navigate through your network or Pandora/music stations without turning on your TV. The official app is available for Apple devices as well, but it's slightly different/stripped down, making the Android version the more robust of the two.

4Very Good Receiver Overall, but Know All Features!
By I. Smith
Overall, this is a good receiver and I have come to be very happy with it. However, there are some very important things that a prospective buyer needs to know about it first; I didn't know these things when I bought it but fortunately I was able to work around them. The receiver doesn't covert between video formats. This may be a standard thing with receivers, but it was unbeknownst to me when I bought it and then read about it with dismay in the manual. What this means is if you have, say, an HDMI cable in the video out source on your cable/satellite/DVD running into the receiver, and then a composite video cable going out from the receiver to your TV, you won't get any video because it won't convert between the HDMI and composite connection. The above is very important because the receiver's on-screen display menus will ONLY work over an HDMI connection, meaning you must be running an HDMI cable out from the receiver to your TV as well as out from your video source devices. I have an older TV without HDMI and was initially unable to do this.I was ultimately saved because my TV has a DVI input, so I bought an HDMI->DVI converter and now all is well. But be aware of these things before you buy!The receiver's on screen menus are great and it makes it easy to configure the set up items as well as listen to Internet music sources or an iPod.I have a Verizon iPhone 4 and I can listen to any audio source from the phone whether it's mp3 music via the phone's iPod app or streaming audio from the TuneIn radio app. You control the iPod music from the receiver, but control the TuneIn app from the phone. It also charges my phone when it's plugged in and I now use the receiver as my main charging source (the receiver has to be on of course though to charge the phone).I've been using Pandora a lot and it works well. The on-screen menus let you pick a station, add new ones, and like/not like a song. You can do all of this from the receiver itself if the TV is off, but it's not quite as convenient as doing it on the TV screen. Entering the account information the first time through the receiver was hell; you had to type each character individually through a tedious scrolling menu (this was before I discovered my DVI input and got the on-screen menus working), but I discovered later that you can also input account information for Internet audio sources through the receiver's web interface. I would definitely recommend the latter for setting up your Web accounts.vTuner is a nice option for Internet streaming audio too. The way I've mostly used this is I went onto the vTuner web site, I found stations I wanted to save for listening, and then I went into the receiver web interface using a computer on my local network (you just type the receiver's IP address into a web browser), and under the "my favorites" tab in the web interface you can copy and paste the URL's of the stations into a saved list of favorites that you can then play from the receiver. Not every URL I used worked (some would just fail to play for whatever reason), but I was ultimately able to find some of my favorite shows on different stations that had working URL's. You can save up to 40 favorite stations in this manner. One thing I wish the receiver had is a screen saver for the on-screen TV interface. I have an older plasma TV that is subject to screen burns and if you leave music playing with the on-screen stuff on the TV, it will never go into a screen saver mode. For this reason I generally listen to music with the TV off.I've played with the iPhone app for controlling the receiver some too. It was easy to set up. It offers more limited functionality compared to the receiver's actual remote but is a nice option for controlling from another room. When playing Pandora, it will show the artist/track information from within the app too which is cool.I hope this information helps prospective buyers!

I bought this from another vendor when it was on sale. This receiver is a good receiver for the price, but you get what you pay for. It has great features which is why its such a big seller. These power some brand new Energy RC-10 speakers. Internet radio GUI is fairly plain and the search function does not retrieve the same results as when you search online through a PC. But other than that, it works great. USB works quite well, although once in awhile it won't play the next song. Easy fix though, all you have to do is press next. Setup is straight forward and easy. Audssey 2EQ makes things convenient also. Now my biggest complaint...the receiver inherently has an audible noise floor. As the volume is turned up, there is a hiss that gets louder and louder. When I surf through my PS3 menu and the volume is about 35 (range is 0-80), you hear an audible hiss from the speakers. Keep in mind I am sitting about 5 feet away from the receiver. This hiss is much very apparent with all listening modes besides stereo and direct. It's not a problem with music, because the hiss is drowned out by the music. But, with movies where there are scenes that are more quiet (which happens pretty often) that hiss will annoy you to no end.I've exchanged receivers twice thinking that it was a defect, but each time I exchanged it, the hiss was still there. I've ruled out every single possibility: speakers, wire, connection, grounding, and any possible source of interference. I've taken it to a neighbor's house and when everything is hooked up, that hiss is still there. I've unplugged every single input on the receiver to rule out my other devices, and the hiss is still there. I even went to a Fry's demo room to test out their demo model, and the hiss is there.I would stay away from this receiver if you are an avid movie watcher. That hissing noise is unacceptable. Also, I didn't read too much into this issue, but I heard Onkyo has HDMI switching issues. Not sure if this applies to this model however. If you listen to music only and aren't too critical, music sounds just fine.

5Sonos 101 and the Play:3
By Captain Latte
Here's the problem with Sonos. Most of these reviews are worthless for a new customer as they have no concept what the various components do, how they fit together and what they should get! In fact, I will say that Sonos could significantly improve the messaging of their products. Think about it -- is a new customer going to have any idea what ZonePlayer or Bridge means. Even their website is quite confusing for someone new to all of this stuff. For example, they sell a ZonePlayer120 and ZonePlayer90, which have vastly different functionality. Sonos should just get rid of their marketing folks and hire some people from Apple to fix the messaging confusion. My advice for folks who want to learn more about Sonos is to find a friend with one or go to local stereo shop. Fortunately, the folks on the tech-side of Sonos know what the heck they are doing and why I give this 5 stars!OK, I just bought a new Black Play:3 along with the Bridge. In a nutshell, here is probably all you need to know:- Why... The Play:3 is essentially for folks who want to listen to their digital music through a high-quality speaker system that is wirelessly connected to sources of music. Typically, the music is coming from your computer's library (e.g., iTunes) or some internet service such as Pandora or TuneIn (internet radio). How do you control all of this -- by using one of their nifty free apps which run on iPhones, iPod Touch, Androids, iPads (with more to come).- The Play:3 is your speaker component where sound comes out of. The only connection to worry about is AC power. The beauty of this is that you can move your speaker anywhere in your house at will just as you would with a clock radio.- The Bridge is a little white box that connects to your WiFi router. It functions to stream music from the source to your Play:3 speaker, wherever that may be. Sure, you don't really need this $50 box as you could plug your Play:3 into your router, but then you defeat much of the purpose for getting a Sonos (wireless portability).- Sonos makes setup of everything about as easy as possible. If you have a firewall (e.g., at workplace), then things become a little more complicated (you're best off just calling tech support instead of wasting hours figuring it out, which I know many have done).- I decided to copy my entire iTunes library to a network (NAS) drive and just have Sonos access this. Essentially, I have a portable 500GB Western Digital USB drive connected to my Apple Airport Extreme base station. It is ridiculously easy to setup. The advantage of this is that my music is always available instead of needing my computer to be turned on. Also, much of disk space on my Macbook Pro is used for photos and videos. I should say that another reason I did this was because I am running Mac OS Lion, which is not yet supported by Sonos (but this will be addressed very soon).- The nice thing about Sonos is that I can easily expand my system later on. For example, I can buy another Play:3 so that I can setup the two in stereo. Or I can create multiple zones in my house (e.g., bedroom, living room) with each Play:3 playing different music at the same time.- The main limitation of the Play:3 is that there is no line-in jack. This means you cannot connect an outside audio source such as a CD player. And because of this limitation, you cannot configure it using an Apple Airport Express to stream from your iOS device using Apple's Airplay technology. The Play:5 system has a line-in if you really some of these features. Personally, I would love to see Sonos come out with a cheap little white box that just has some line-in audio jacks (including optical). This box could address some of the Play:3 limitations as well as offering an easy way to connect the Sonos system to an Apple TV.Overall, I am extremely pleased with my purchase and will likely buy another Play:3 shortly to further enhance my system. It just works...and sounds great!

2Not even close to Sonos 5 (play:5)
By Stephen Gibson
I had 3 Sonos 5's (now called the play:5) and I wanted to add 4th. The play:3 came out so I decided to save the $100 or so and go for the play:3 after reading all the reviews of it. I had the unit exactly 30 minutes before deciding to return it. It's not even close to the 5's. Volume is control is jumpy, not linear like the 5's, power is about half of 5's and once the volume is over 50% the sound starts to get real tinny.Bottom line is if you don't have anything to compare the play:3 against you may be perfectly happy with it, but if you have any 5's in the mix you will be disappointed. I'm a huge fan of sonos but the play:3 just doesn't cut it and is way too expensive for the sound quality.

5Easy set up and works like a charm.
By Bearcat
We were looking for something that would allow us to play music remotely with the ability to change music without having to get up every time we wanted to hear something different. Normally we have a Tivoli radio in the kitchen for FM and we also hook an ipod touch up to it for Pandora. Not the most convenient thing to do to have to find the ipod and cable and sometimes the FM stations were hard to get it clearly. We just got the Sonos Play 3 yesterday and I have got to say we are blown away by the convenience, ease of setup and sound quality.Keep in mind you have to buy the Sonos Bridge if you want to use it wirelessly. I also bought the bridge and hooked it up to our router. I put in the setup cd and everything was running smoothly in less than 10 minutes. Easiest setup for a gadget in a long time. I then downloaded the Sonos Ipad app, then signed in to my Spotify and Pandora accounts and I was streaming effortlessly in 5 minutes. Controlling the songs from the Sonos software was really easy and I could change songs and even change the volume easily. Overall I am so impressed with the Sonos Play 3 we are going to get another for our nursery. I am a gadget geek and this is the most impressed I have been with a gadget in a very long time. Highly recommended.Update: I have ordered another Play 3 in white for our nursery and expect delivery this week. Once it arrives and I have set it up and tested it I will update this review with thoughts on how a multiple zone speaker set up works.Update 2 August 17: We have had the additional Play 3 speaker in the nursery for over two weeks and it works like a charm. I mainly use the Ipad app to control the speakers while at home and it is really easy to switch between the two speakers/zones and make seperate playlists, control volume seperately, etc. It could not be easier. Also, I now have added the Sirius/XM service and I can stream any of those channels with ease. I can be playing NFL Radio down in the living room while the nursery has classical music playing and it all goes off without a hitch. VERY happy.Update 3 January 10, 2013: I have now had the Play 3 speaker for almost 1.5yrs. It still sounds just as good as the day I got it and I have not had a single problem. We run the software on our macbook air, iphones, ipads, android phone and android tablet. It has run flawlessly from all sources and the software has been solid as a rock. If you have the money this is the one to get. I recommend this to all my friends and family looking for a wireless audio solution. It is that awesome.

5Best In Its Class
By C L Hinds
I believe that in this price range the Denon AVR-1312 is the best bang for your buck. Although there are a few missing features it has all the ones most users will ever need. Here's a quick list of pros and cons that help the AVR-1312 stand out from the crowd. For reference I have mine hooked up to a set of Polk Audio RM75 speakers and a RCA 150W 10" sub.PROS1. Amazing sound.2. Pro Logic IIx-does a great job of turning 2 channel sources into 5.1.3. Good built-in crossover that helps blend the right frequencies in order to get the optimal sound out of your speakers no matter the size or placement.4. 3D pass-thru - not found on most receivers at this price.CONS1. Flimsy remote. Feels very light and plasticky.2. No Audacy auto setup-not surprising at this price tho.3. No video pass-thru on standby. I don't really care about this, but if you ant to use your tv without having the receiver on this will make it difficult.Despite this receivers flaws you really can't go wrong with it. Denon makes very good audio equipment and it shows in this entry-level receiver. If you can get it for around $200 it is a steal!

1Just a bad experience..........
By David Topping
I had actually bought this unit to replace a similar Pioneer model, (lightning had fried the HDMI inputs *sigh*) I went ahead and purchased one based on the reviews here.Let me start by saying that I am not one of those reviewers who give terrible ratings because the unit came late or was scratched or I felt shafted for some other dumb reason, when reviews should be about the products. I also wish to add I have a little experience and am not a total airhead when it comes to these things, having installed/connected loads of Flat screens on walls and run basic setups for friends and family. This review is about MY experience and I am guessing that I must be in the minority based on the other reviews here, this is actually the 1st time that a well reviewed product that I have purchased has let me down.I have an older Panasonic 42" viera plasma 720p and am using a basic LG BluRay player, despite all my attempts I just cannot get a picture from the receiver, plug in the player directly into the TV and it works great, the receiver is getting the signal from the player because I can see it on the front display as it flashes PCM/HDMI but no output, have tried different cables everything!!.after calling Denon customer service I got some helpful advice and they admitted it could be a "handshake" problem between the TV and the receiver. At this point i was not even going to post a bad review as these things happen and even though its SUPPOSED to work I have read there are compatibility issues with HDMI 1.3, 1.3a, 1.4 etc etc. its ironic that the customer service rep said this is there #1 problem with HDMI/compatibility.He suggested as workaround, plug the Bluray player directly into the TV and get my audio via the Coaxial *ding* great Idea!!, which is what I did and now could not get any sound *sob*, ok another call to the helpful people at Denon Customer service and he suggested that maybe the Bluray player could not output two digital signals at once?...what do I know?.Ok, so I got fed up and went the tried and trusted route and just plugged in the two analog L/R RCA cables from the player into the receiver into the SAT/CAB input and of course voila!!...it worked. Now to all you audiophiles out there its just a temp fix I know I know I will not get anywhere near the 5.1/DTS/Dolby etc etc, so I settled into watch my new Bluray of "Bullitt" and all was as well as could be expected from my analog set up, about 90mins into the movie (reason for 1 star rating) *POP* and the red light flashed on the receiver and all the lights went out...*sigh*, turned it off and on and it was fine for about 15mins more then *pop* again and off it went. From my experience this usually happens when a unit overheats, I have the unit on a shelf by itself with a 8" clearance on Top for ventilation + I was hardly driving it hard, please note that my previous Technics & Pioneer receivers were both kept in exactly the same spots with no overheating problems whatsoever and TBH, even poorly ventilated setups (You've seen them where the person has a Wii, Cablebox, DVD player, tuner, receiver etc all stacked on top of one another in a cabinet with a glass front) it usually takes more than 3/4 of a movie and average volume to suffer an overheat shutdown problem.Like I say it looks like I got a lemon, these things happen ...but felt it fair to share my experience.

5Simple Pleasure
By John Barker
This is my first experience with a Denon product, and I must say that I am overall very happy with this purchases. The AVR-1312 is Denon's first entry level offering, featuring their great quality design with affordable pricing. While this is very basic 5.1 surround receiver, it has quite a lot to offer the budget audio enthusiast; namely, clean consistent sound across the spectrum. There are no holes in the listening experience but very clean highs, perfect mid range and tight, solid bass. While I was reviewing other units, I kept on noticing problems with different aspects concerning the HMDI hook ups and other anomalous things. My final two choices I had narrowed down in my price range were the Denon and the Sony STRDH520 7.1 Channel 3D AV Receiver (Black). While the Sony was by far more feature rich, there were enough complaints that kept me leaning towards the Denon, which boasted 91/2 stars and a long history of excellence. Sony seems to have quality issues in their manufacturing, because many different products from them often have a fair amount of problem-ed units. The only drawback for me is that I am pushing 8ohm speakers and the amp is designed for driving 6ohm speakers more efficiently. I really have to crank it to get any level of sound out of it passed a whisper, but in the end this isn't much of a problem. The discrete separate amplification circuits rated at .08% THD, you can crank this guy up with minimal distortion until the very end of the dial. I can get an acceptable volume without any discernible distortion for music and movie viewing. Getting to the higher volumes that I like at times, it still out performs other audio systems I have owned before. But, would still like a little more crank for those, "I really want to feel this" times. At the end of the day, this is a small thing compared to the build and quality that comes from owning Denon equipment. Need a basic 5.1 receiver that won't brake the bank but deliver great sound and be reliable years down the road; buy the Denon.
