Exquisite

As an operator of a small recording studio I'm used to fairly high end audio gear (e.g. Manley, Empirical Labs, Apogee, UA, etc). I've been looking for an inexpensive DAC to integrate into an Apple Airplay setup for informal/recreational listening in several rooms. I'm currently using several Apple Airport Express connected to pairs of Sonos speakers. The Airports run hot though, and I've had bad luck with them failing. Too, while the Sonos are nice, they can't compare to many standalone passive speakers. The goal, then, was to replace the Airports with something cooler and upgrade from the Sonos, all while retaining the convenience of Apple's Airplay.Enter Apple TV and Nuforce's Dia.I ordered one Dia initially to see if it lived up to Nuforce's description and it didn't disappoint. It's every bit as detailed and clean as a PS Audio Digital Link DAC, and holds up even to an Apogee DA16x (IMHO), all in a much smaller form factor. The built-in stereo amp further reduces the overall size. With respect to the amp, I think Nuforce short-sells it somewhat. Connecting the Nuforce to a pair of Polk Audio TSi200 speakers, and turning the volume up to 75% is about as loud as I care to listen to music (in a 12'x14' bedroom) and going above that results in no perceptible distortion. Very clean and very warm (initial listens were Jimmy Haslip's "Outland," Mr. Mister's "Pull," and Alison Krause's "Stay").After running this setup for a few hours, it's completely cool to the touch (both the Dia and the Apple TV). Mission accomplished! Nuforce has a winning product, IMHO, and I'll be ordering several more. One last thing... The first unit I received from Amazon didn't work (or so I thought). I contacted Nuforce (through Amazon) for an RMA and they responded within hours. Looking at the RMA address, I noticed that they are located 2.4 miles from where I work. So, I asked if I could just drop the Dia off in person to save them some shipping charges (and save me some time). They were cool with this even though I can guess this wouldn't be a very scalable support model :-) To my surprise, they had a replacement unit ready when I arrived. They were totally cool and made me feel right at home. Anyway, when I connected the new unit it also didn't work. Hmm. Thinking there's no way two units would be defective, I checked Apple's site and saw that a new version of Apple TV software was available. And, it turns out this version fixes an issue where the optical output doesn't work if a TV is not connected to the HDMI port. Bingo! That was exactly the symptom I was seeing. And, sure enough, after upgrading the Apple TV things worked perfectly.Kudos to Nuforce for their patience, great service, and wonderful little DAC!

Surpassed Expectations

I originally contacted Nuforce to ask if they had a product that would be a simple bridge between the upcoming iCloud Match service and speakers. I had previously thought of getting an Apple TV but since I have TiVo it would have been somewhat redundant (Netflix). The iCloud is 256 Kbps and the upgrade in quality, matched by a high quality Nuforce DAC feeding a pair of excellent bookshelf speakers seemed like a high fidelity approach to a home system that would fit my small living room and serve TV, PS3, TiVo and Airport Express iCloud feed. I had already bought Nuforce's Icon HDP headphone amp for my computer workstation so I was happy with their quality.Bottom line is that the audio quality is, well, a difficult thing to characterize for me in words. Suffice to say that if the recording is well made, like live or in the room with you sounding, the sound from the Dia will be he same. Quality in, quality out. iCloud is serving pretty well save for some wireless signal drops. I also bought Nuforce's Tangent E5 speakers. Figured that although they didn't make them, merely resold them, they were an approved match and they have not disappointed. So my search is over. I have a small, efficient, portable system. I do suggest for customers looking the setup three optical devices that you buy a coaxial interface box with a Dynex Digital RCA audio cable to use the coax connection. To use the optical out port from an Airport Express there seems to be just one cable available: the Belkin 6' Digital Toslink Optical Audio Cable with Line-Out Adapter. The little 3.5 mm adapter for the Airport Express is the key to the connection.

neat little package

Wow, what a device. It's tiny - think the size of external hard drive. It does exactly what it's designed to do with no fuss and no problems. Replaced an old Marantz integrated amp that had no optical in and drives the same set of speakers just fine. The one improvement I'd like to see is for the speaker connectors to support banana plugs. Until then you'll need a set of something like these: Twist Crimp Toolless Speaker Cable Connectors - Angled Gold Pin MKII - 4 pair pack Regular Angled Gold Pins
