You can do better
By midwestinny
I bought a 5 speaker sony surround sound system back in 1999, it really was pretty amazing. A few different surround sound settings with a few other effects as well. The sound really was first class for MY taste, which was not very experienced. However, as time has gone on, I lost the two rear speakers, the remote had been replaced once and the new one was fading now too, not to mention it sounded like I blew one of the speakers out, it was obvious it had ran its course and had a heck of a run.Additionally, now most home theater systems now came in an all-in-one main unit, allowing me to discard a basic philips dvd player I was never all to thrilled with and cutting down on space. I have a Philips LCD 42" that I'm mostly satisfied with, so when shopping around looking for something under $200, this seemed like a good option. The setup: It was pretty straight forward, nothing you can't figure out because I know for a fact I'm just not that industrious electronically speaking, took about 15 minutes in a small apt that I had to maneuver around, will take no time in a decent sized place.Extras: Not a lot of bells and whistles here, interactive features, internet access, NO WI-FI and not even sure if it is WI-FI compatible.DVD play: Fine, looked great. Either my eye isn't sharp enough or the player on dvd (not blu-ray) doesn't make for much incremental difference.Sound: Not bad, all the speakers put out good sound, a little bass heavy for my taste, but I'm like more balanced sound with sharp crisp sounds, not overpowering bass. But as time went on, I felt like even my old sony sounded better, so being the neaurotic that I am, I actually compared them, one hooked up to my iPod the other to my macbook, playing the same song. I wasn't totally right, but the Philips did not absolutely outclass the sony, and it really should have after 10 yrs of technological advancements. Ultimately though, it's my previous experience with surround sound that spoiled this product for me. Had I been a first time user, ignorant or unaware of the nuances of high quality sound, I probably would have loved it. But alas I'm not, so I returned this and picked up the Sony BDV-E570 Blu-ray Player Home Entertainment System. And my suspicions were confirmed, the Philips is not a bad unit, but falls short of higher quality surround sound experiences, and the Sony BDV-E570 would actually be considered a middle of the road unit in the entire spectrum of electronics out there. So, if this is your first attempt at surround sound, you'll probably love it, and it will be a great place to start. At a price between $90-$130 it's a decent value. However, if you've heard good sounds from a good system before, this likely won't meet your expectations and will always leave you wondering, are you splitting hairs or is the quality not quite there, well it's the latter, the quality isn't quite there.

It is to difficult to use
By kmd
This product irritates every time I use it. It takes a very long time to eject a disc. When using the surround sound with anything other than playing a disc, it's a crap shoot whether I'll remember how to do it. The sound is great when I can get it to work.
