Polk Audio SurroundBar 9000 Instant Home Theater (Black)
Product Description
This Instant Home Theater is about more than creating sound far beyond what any TV speakers can produce. The 9000 is about transforming your flat panel into an amazing home theater experience. Polk technology and innovation make this possible. For starters, you'll hear superior center channel intelligibility thanks to the Optimized Center Array, a feature that employs all of the bar's drivers. Then, like real component systems, we use the critical 80Hz crossover point for bar and sub to minimize localization of the sub and create the ideal blending. But perhaps most impressive, we've created a component quality sound bar that reproduces true 5.1 channel audio in DTS or Dolby Digital. When you augment those surround formats with our proprietary SDA® Surround Technology, you'll hear why the SurroundBar 9000 IHT is the best sounding bar/subwoofer system. Digital Signal Processing (DSP) This is the most powerful DSP ever incorporated into any of our SurroundBars and is capable of 160MIPS (millions of instructions per second!!). DSP packs an incredible amount of processing power into a small space, controling delay, frequency shaping, crossover points, signal mixing and parametric compression. Dolby Digital & DTS Decoding both optical inputs can decode and reproduce Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 program material. Many bars can decode 5.1 but can only reproduce it as 2-channel stereo. The SurroundBar 9000 IHT plays back all discrete channels as intended for optimal surround performance and fidelity. Polk's patented SDA surround technology creates a broad, deep and tall sound field that extends along the side walls and overhead with a high degree of specificity. You hear a vivid 5-channel sound field from a single source; no rear speakers or special room characteristics are required.

POLK AUDIO 9000
By Illinios
Bought the Polk 9000 January 7th, so far no problems looks nice under our tv.Music sounds great and movies sound excellent.Watched several movies and the sound can make you jump out of your seat...it is a powerful sound system.Watched Titanic blueray with DTS master audio with my wife last night and set the Blueray player audio for the same(the sound bar LED was orange for DTS). To our amazement both of us were looking in the corners behind us thinking something hit the walls...how is that possible with a sound bar?I went to Best Buy and sat in their studio to watch part of a movie - no doubt their system had more surround and I'm sure it's louder, but for this price and simplicity we have no regrets.

Very good (with caveats)
By Shem
Pros: Easy set up, very good quality sound (optical input), more than loud enough for small to medium rooms.Cons: Do not expect 5 channel sound from this (or possibly any) sound/surround bar, no HDMI input, hissing noise from analog input, small amount of glue where grill was attached was evident. This was bought for a living room. Its primary purpose was to allow me to watch movies and listen to music without too many wires everywhere. Set up was straightforward. Mounting on the wall was a bit tough since I did it alone and had a hard time aligning the key hole slots with the screws on the wall. Ended up scratching the back of the bar quite a bit. Bottom line, get some help if you are going to wall mount this. That said, hookup and use were beyond easy. Subwoofer synced up with bar easily and functioned without any drops or lags. Did not program the bar for use with my TV remote. I tried listening first on my ipod classic hooked up via the mini RCA input. The result was below average quality sound with some degree of background hiss. This was always the case, even when I backed off the volume on the playback device. Same occurred with Pandora music played off a smartphone. I did contact Polk about this and they said that this was not normal and I should return this for a replacement. Had I bought this at a brick and mortar store, I would have. Not wanting to to deal with return shipment and a wait for a new one, I tried using the optical input. Using the optical output of my Panasonic Bluray player, music from Pandora or CDs was spectacular. Lord of the Rings soundtrack was amazing. Mumford and Son had detail and depth. This unit does not lack clarity or bass with two channel stereo fed optically. The subwoofer, seamlessly blended and was powerful and low enough to satisfy my ears and my small room. Spatial separation between left and right sounds was very good if you sit directly in front of the bar. I was already thrilled that I had not returned the bar. Also, I do not plan on using the analog inputs that often. With movies the experience was slightly different. I watched The Dark Knight Rises as my first movie on this bar. The bass heavy audio required me to turn down the sub to avoid some distortion. Dialog was sometimes not clear too (but this was also the case for this movie in theaters). I have also watched some stuff on Netflix. Once again, don't expect sounds to come from behind you. What I have found is that this surround bar does immerse you into a movie much much more than your regular TV speakers would, but please do not expect 5.1 surround effects. I, quite unfairly, compared this to my Definitive Technology/Sony ES setup that is now quite old and the surround bar would still be blown away. Over all, I am very happy with $799 purchase. I applaud it for what it is. A very sensible way to have fewer wires and get very impressive stereo sound and immersive (if not quite 5.1) movie sound.
